Excellent experience onboard! Detailed historical records.
One of the best museums of specific interest. They have maintained the Fram so well and it is an experience to walk in, around and through this fantastic ship. Historical pictures were displayed all around and there were supporting shows to watch. A lot of Ealing involved.

A fascinating tribute to Norwegian exploratory spirit
Norway has fostered an impressive number of remarkable explorers. They were men who took incredible risks to satisfy their thirst for knowledge and pioneering adventure. Amundsen and Nansen are among the most famous, and this museum does a great job of telling their stories. In contrast to the improvised recklessness displayed in the sister museum (Kon-Tiki), these were men of meticulous preparation. The core of the Fram museum is the namesake ship itself. It has been restored to display in full scale life on board, reinforced by clever simulations of surrounding storms and ice bergs. Along the walls in this multi-story display are rows of texts in Norwegian and English, supplemented by boxes offering interpretation in half a dozen more languages. Displays of various artefacts from expeditions are mixed in. The only part that does not work well is the fact that your reading and watching is constantly interrupted by people passing in front of you. The layout of the museum is simply too narrow to be convenient. But overall, the museum is a remarkable testimony of man's testing of human boundaries.

    A Tribute to Exploration
The Fram Museum is possibly the most impressive collections of Norwegian Exploration, but also highlights exploration from other parts of the world. Definitely worth a visit, combined with some of the other wonderful museums on Oslo's museum island. Spend at least 2 - 3 hours in the museum.

The Fram Polar Expedition Museum is brill!
Trip Advisor is confusing. I'm writing a review on Fram Museum not its Admission!! Yes, you can buy a ticket for all 3 as I did. The Fram Polar Expedition is a brill museum! It's big. It contains the 1893 built, Fram ship from the Norwegian explorer, Roald Amundsen's polar expedition. Ship designed by Colin Archer. It seems he designed the ship to cope with freezing ice so it would rise up above and not crack under it! Both astute clever guys, no wonder the expedition was successful. You can go all over the Fram decks, including from cabins of ordinary seamen to those of the medic and officers, and where they ate and mingled. Amundsen was amazingly organised. He placed workshops on board to cope with many contingencies at sea, workshops for carpentry, a blacksmithy, sewing machines for sail repairs. And later, a windmill sail for electricity. There's some great photos from the period and loads of other expedition material. You need a minimum of 2 hours here. To travel to Bygdoy island, I went to City Hall, for the Bygdoy ferry from Pier 3. The ferry takes about 10 minutes, then a short walk to the 3 museums. I bought the ticket the day before, but you can buy on the day. And on board too, if the queue is slow or long. The ferries run half hourly in summer, at 10 mins and 40 mins past the hour. 99 kroner day return. It is busy, so if you have tickets for all 3 museums, you can go between them and return later.

Excellent museum devoted to polar exhibitions of the past
A lovely, informative museum. Easy to access by boat, lots of info and things to look at. We learned alot and also avoided the rain!

    Fantastic
A fantastic day out, so much to see and read as you walk along. Other museums close by. Boarding the Fram was surreal, the actual ship that was used in the exploration.

    Needs maintenance
This museum was not well maintained when we visited. The second floor where the boat is lacked air/ventilation and was like a sauna in June when we visited. The film which was supposed provide context for the complex number of polar expeditions and people involved was not working the day we visited. There is no audio guide and no in person guides. We left after 30 minutes of wandering around. Lots of artifacts but unless you are already knowledgeable about the story of arctic exploration and want to read hundreds of wall plaques, you won’t come away with much understanding of what this museum is supposed to be preserving.

    Great Historic Museum
I have to thank our tour guide for giving us so much information about this museum. But even without him we would have loved just wandering around. Seeing the actual ship that took Amundsen to the South Pole was unreal.

    Outstanding
I could have spent a whole day in the Fram museum it is awesome , due to the short time in Oslo and other commitments a 2 hour visit gives an insight into the history and stories behind the adventures, If you purchase the Oslo card the short ferry ride and entrance are included , the static displays have English descriptions , you can board the Fram and explore below deck , this is truly a well-designed museum a credit to all.

Well Worth Your Time and Effort
Amazing collection of memorabilia, photos and artifacts in addition to the boats. It would be easy to spend hours pouring over everything. Two hours will probably let you enjoy most of the treasures.

    A Must-See on a Visit to Oslo
We had a wonderful visit to the Fram Museum this March during a photography workshop in Norway. The museum is so interesting, and the exhibits and multi-media experiences are fun and informative for all ages. The staff were amazing to work with coordinating our group visit: Responsive, professional and just such a positive overall experience. Looking forward to a return visit!

Really interesting and informative. Enough interactive exhibits aswell. Didn’t know much about Amundsen besides the husky vs dogs so this was great. Went to this as part of the Oslo pass which is highly recommended

This museum is unique and one of the most intriguing I've ever visited. Fram is the strongest wooden ship ever built and still holds the records for sailing farthest north and farthest south. The museum provides wonderful insighst into the exploration history of the Canadian Arctic, and how it became Canadian... and why most of the names there are Scandinavian. The Fram Museum also has a polar simulator where you can experience the cold and the dangers of polar expeditions more than 100 years ago.

Next to the main building is the Gjøa building with exhibitions on the Arctic and the Northwest Passage. You can actually visit an original vintage Polar expedition vessel and walk in the footsteps of famous explorers...FUN for all ages...Highly recommended, and very worthwhile.

This was a very interesting and interactive museum. It’s absolutely worth it! Our only complaint is that it was SO hot inside. We went in July and it’s not common for places in Norway to have AC but the size of this place and the fact that you can go inside the boat really makes the lack of airflow an issue.

Also, it was nice that there is a discount to buy tickets to multiple museums. We paired our ticket with the Maritime museum.

Can highly recommend a visit. The location of the museum is already worth a visit. The museum itself was very interesting and well executed with movies, experiences and being able to experience the ship from inside. Very nice for all ages.

Allow several hours here as there is a lot to take in. The museum concentrates on the roles played by legendary Norwegian explorers and scientists including Amundsen and Nansen who were instrumental in opening up the polar regions. Two full size wooden boats, including the Fram, are available to clamber through and there is a large array of displays and photographs detailing life in the Arctic and Antarctic. There are several other museums nearby and the Maritime museum has a cafe.

The Fram museum is stupendous for friends and family alike. Afterwards I strongly recommend visiting the Oslo graveyard and pay respects to Edward Evans (another famous polar explorer), Edvard Munch and Henrik Ibsen. Their graves are all in close proximity.
Fram is superb for kids and families
Avoid kon tiki. Same price but crap

Well preserved ship used for polar expeditions by Norwegian explorers including Roald Amundsen. In front of the museum there is also a statue of explorers facing the Oslo's bay.
You can explore the ship and read details about preparations for expedition (the ship was specially strengthen and left on purpose to be fully ice/locked to test the strength and shape of the hull, as it was designed to be uplifted by the expanding ice rather than to be locked and crushed).
While on upper deck the multimedia projectors project (on the walls and ceiling) the night sky of polar regions and icebergs floating around ship to give you a hint of what it looked like to be onboard. The ship even has a slight vibrations as if its diesel engine is still powering the ship.
Inside ship you can see crew's compartments, dining room, storage...
Great experience!

Hard to exaggerate how stunning this museum is. The full-sized polar ship Fram, used for polar research is spectacular. And the way it is displayed in full..with tours below and the ship "rocking and rolling" as it once was during his polar excursions...is worth the price of admission. The explorers Fridtjof Nansen, Otto Sverdrup, and Roald Amundsen were able to "share" this ship to make their numerous polar explorations. Given the taxing use the vessel had, seems quite remarkable that it survived and is thus able to be put on display inside the museum. And after years of work repairing and getting the Fram vessel back to health, the Norwegians built a museum JUST to hold this ship in all its glory. Stunning....
Note that there are plenty of other ships and displays and videos to satisfy even the most hardcore museum-goer; plenty to see and their website will only whet your appetite.
A fair number of people touring when we went but not excessive at all, particularly given the space the museum occupies. Open from 9:30 am to 6 PM during the summer and slightly shorter hours during the other months...be sure to check online. Hope that you take the chance and give the Fram a few hours of your time; you'll not be disappointed.

The Fram museum is a fascinating attraction. It focuses on the history of polar exploration but has lots of other interesting information as well. This museum is quite modern, with numerous interactive displays and easy to use videos. They also feature two life size replicas of polar exploration ships, which makes Fram unique indeed. I would recommend planning on half a day there to really be able to appreciate all they have to offer. As a bonus, they have a nice cafe and a high quality gift shop. Note that the Maritime Museum and the Kon-Tiki museum are literally across the street, so you could spend an entire day here at those 3 museums, especially if you love nautical history. NOTE: If you are staying along the Oslo waterfront, use the water ferries instead of a taxi cab to get there. It's a lot less expensive and more fun on the water!

Last visited decades ago & very impressed with how they have incorporated modern museum presentation concepts. More of vessel was accessible, and we liked the sledge pulling challenge, which was fun both to watch & to do. The changing sound & visual display around the ship – grinding through ice, northern lights, storm at sea, was remarkably effective.

This museum which houses both the Fram and Gjoa ships taught me lots about those who explored the far northern part of the world. I really enjoyed being able to walk through the Fram and see what life would be like in a wooden ship amongst the ice. The Gjoa (and it’s story) was also interesting, but you could not go aboard it. The wall exhibits about all the explorers were more than I wanted to know so I tended to skip by them.
