We had so fun on this tour! You won’t regret it. We typically never do tours when we visit places preferring instead to do our own thing but we broke down for “just this once” and had a ball. The tour guide is a riot and very informative on many things related to the VonTrapp family and the making of the movie.
He had us singing “Doe a deer, a female deer...” on the ride between stops in no time and other goodies from the movie.
The sights and views were spectacular and pretty soon you are lost in the nostalgia.
This tour will actually make you happy!

This was definitely a highlight of my visit! I had already been on a sound of music tour, but it was great to stop by a few of the places again and the church for the first time. Hallstatt was absolutely beautiful, and a must see! Since we were there in April, it seems it was much quieter than some of the busier months. The guide was very knowledgeable and it was much better being in the van than a big bus.

I'm so glad we did this particular tour experience! Being in an 8-passenger van, as opposed to a large bus, made for an intimate guided tour in a comfortable vehicle. The locations from The Sound of Music were great, but, to my surprise, I loved seeing Hallstatt and the gorgeous lakes of Austria even more. Having 2 hours to explore Hallstatt was perfect; the day was very well paced. The tour guide was kind, fun, and knowledgable. Definitely a day to remember!

We had an incredible day on the small group Sound of Music and Hallstat tour with Rosa Maria as our guide. Her commentary was insightful; her knowledge of the local roads ensured that we had a spectacular trip through the amazing countryside and Hallstatt was a dream. Our fellow traveller, was truly special. My three 20 year old children, husband and I had a day that we will never forget.

I HIGHLY recommend Bob's Tours! Rosa Maria was our informed, patient, knowledgeable tour guide. The small van sightseeing experience is just so superior and more enjoyable than those larger bus group tours. My daughter and I learned a lot about Austrian customs, the making of the movie and Hallstat on this all-day excursion, and I only wish we could have stayed longer in Salzburg to take more trips with Bob's Tours.

We ended up with a personally guided "Sound of Music" tour conducted by the vivacious Silvia K. It was very special for us to have one-on-one time with Sivlia since she was born in Berlin (we have friends from there) and she lived in Florida for 30 years (where we now live). We had so much to talk about, in addition to all the fabulous sightseeing! Silvia is so passionate about what she does, her happy demeanor alone makes you smile and love being there.

It was so fun to see all the places where they shot so many of the outdoor scenes for the 1963 movie, The Sound of Music (and how wonderful no one else showed up for this tour on this day, so we had a personal chauffeur!). Salzburg and surroundings couldn't be more beautiful than in the spring when the hills are truly alive!

It was interesting to see Hallstadt, and I am glad we went, but my heart goes out to the locals who live there. At least on the day we were there, the day before Easter Sunday, there were so many tourists in this tiny little town that was hard to get around and even more difficult to appreciate whatever charm it may have had. No wonder the town has banned tour vehicles from parking there anymore. I would too, if I lived there!

On the other hand, Silvia did a great job taking us to the other side of the lake, AWAY from the town of Hallstadt, for a delightful and quiet outdoor lunch overlooking the sunny lake. From there we took a motorized gondola over to Hallstadt. Honestly, the best part of Hallstadt on that day was the view from the boat. We very much enjoyed that part. Sylvia waited for us on the other side of the lake while we spent maybe 45 minutes walking up the hill, behind and above Hallstadt's main pedestrian street, to visit to the church, which was interesting. But once we had done that, we simply walked back in the boat and waited for it to take us back to the other side where Silvia was waiting. The boat ride itself was very nice on such a lovely day, but I'm not sure it was worth the price, time and effort to do it.

So...my recommendation is to NOT go to Hallstadt. Give the local people some space. It's quaint and cute, but not that cute, and not at all fun with so many tourists taking over.

Actually, there is more to see and do in St. Gilgen and Mondsee, which are also on the itinerary (but only for brief stops)....perhaps you can customize your adventure beyond Salzburg and just go to these other towns (which are otherwise highlighted before and after your visit to Hallstadt). Skip Hallstadt, for the sake of the locals, and enjoy all other things these other places have to offer.

Bottom line: We highly recommend this tour (aside from Hallstadt, itself). You'll be lucky to get Silvia as your guide...there couldn't be a better evangelist for Salzburg, Austria in general, and the Sound of Music. Listening to the movie soundtrack as you drive through the hills makes the total experience come alive all the more. Do it!

We did the 8 hour Sound of Music and Hallstatt tour. We were picked up promptly at our hotel and given commentary of filming history as we drove out of central Salzburg. We had 3 photo stops (the palace used for the outdoor patio scenes, Hellbrunn for the gazebo and driving/singing scenes, and the opening scene) before heading to Hallstatt. We had 2.5 hours on our own to have lunch and explore the town. It would have been helpful to have a bit more guidance. En route to Salzburg, we stopped in Mondsee to visit the wedding church. I felt the guide could have added more to the background of the film and its locations. It was a fine experience, but could have been a better value.

My wife and myself took the sound of music/halstatt tour in June '19 and paid about $100/ea. I contemplated taking this tour or taking the train from Vienna with an overnight in Halstatt but decided to take this tour after reading Rick Steves recommendation. The advantage of this tour is they take you to some of the sound of music stops before they go to Halstatt and also they take you out on a nice two lane road thru the country that a train would not take. We only had about 2 hours in Halstatt to take the boat ride and eat lunch. Beautiful little town I had seen pictures of many times. I would highly recommend this part of the trip. The other part was for the wife. The advantage of Bob's tours compared to other tours is they use small 8 person vans as opposed to a big tour bus so you can drive on the narrow roads in town and out in the country. I would recommend this tour.

We booked the Sound of Music/Hallstatt tour. We are so glad that we chose to book with Bob’s. Rosa Maria was an excellent guide and a joy to spend the day with. She provided great stories and lots of useful information. The tour length was perfect and well-paced. It is a great opportunity to see the Salzkammergut region, even if you are not a huge Sound of Music fan. The vans were comfortable and you could see well out the windows. Because you can travel quickly with a smaller group, we were able to beat all of the crowds to the sound of music locations, which was awesome. I would take this tour again without hesitation.
