Overview
Explore the magnificent lava tunnel Raufarhólshellir, one of the longest and best-known lava tubes in Iceland. Located just 30-40 minutes from Reykjavík, the tunnel is easily accessible year round. Discover the inner workings of a volcanic eruption and walk along the path where lava flowed during the Leitahraun eruption, which occurred approximately 5200 years ago. Our tour is approximately one hour whereas platforms and lights have been incorporated - making the experience of visiting the cave simply breathtaking.   The tour includes all necessary equipment. Choose your preferred departure time upon booking.  Please note that this tour does not include pick up and is for self driving passengers only.
Highlights
  • Prebooking ensures your preferred time slot
  • Choose from several departure times throughout the day
  • A guide explains geological details you may otherwise have missed
  • Ideal for travelers with limited time
What to Expect
At your confirmed time, you'll meet your guide and small group at Raufarhólshellir lava tunnel, roughly 30 minutes from downtown Reykjavik. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and warm, waterproof clothing. Your guide provides you with a helmet and light before leading you into the tunnel. Listen as they point out some of the tunnel’s most interesting features and learn about the changing colors of the lava rock formations as you walk. Large rocks make the tunnel difficult to traverse in some places, but a footbridge and several paths have been built over the roughest terrain. Lights have also been incorporated in order to highlight the changing colors and clearly show the powerful volcanic activity that formed the tunnel during the Leitahraun eruption, which occurred around 5,200 years ago. After your tour ends you are free to make your own way back to Reykjavik or onto your next destination.

An informative and educational tour delivered in a lighthearted and amusing manner which kept the interest and attention of the group. It is a small hike into the tunnel over well laid paths of rock and metal stairways, we had some members of the group...More

Great trip, you learn tons of interesting facts about the tunnel themselves. our guide was pretty funny, telling stories of proposals gone wrong or lost phones due to slippery grips. Would definitely go again, very easy and very visually pleasing.

Quick and easy tour with some climbing. Is a bit cold in the cave, but very educational and interesting place to check out. The guide is very friendly and will answer any questions about the cave!
