What to expect
At your confirmed time, meet your guide and small group at Raufarhólshellir lava tunnel. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and warm, waterproof clothing. Your guide provides you with a helmet and light before leading you into the tunnel. Listen as they point out some of the tunnel’s most interesting features and learn about the changing colors of the lava rock formations as you walk. Large rocks make the tunnel difficult to traverse in some places, but a footbridge and several paths have been built over the roughest terrain. Lights have also been incorporated in order to highlight the changing colors and clearly show the powerful volcanic activity that formed the tunnel during the Leitahraun eruption, which occurred around 5,200 years ago. Our Iran has four seasons and sightseeing in it at any time of the year is pleasant and enjoyable. Whenever you consider exploring Iran; You will have a memorable and unforgettable encounter with a part of this wonder.
Do not worry about your travel expenses at all; At the lowest cost, go around Iran and stay in its best accommodations.
To start, you can start your Iran tour from the beautiful island of Kish and buy a plane ticket and book a cheap hotel in Kish, to get to this island cheaply. When traveling to Kish, be sure to visit Coconut Beach, the Artists' Pass, the Greek Ship, the Marjan Beach Park, and the Portuguese Valley; These attractions are free.
We suggest that you buy a Qeshm Island plane ticket as one of the cheapest FlyToday flights as your next destination and go to one of the other amazing islands of Iran. Being in Qeshm weather makes you salty; Imagine the warm and beautiful sun of Hengam Island warming your heart and the Valley of the Stars, taking you on a journey into the history of geological interactions in this part of the world.
From Qeshm to Shiraz, the capital of the Orange Spring, and by booking a cheap but quality hotel, remember Shiraz in a different way. Consider your next destination by buying a plane ticket to Yazd, the city of fire and sun. Visit the Yazd Grand Mosque and the Lari House and book a cheap and historic hotel in the Fahadan neighborhood for a cheap and affordable stay.
Whatever the turn, it is the turn to buy a plane ticket from Tehran to Mashhad and a trip to the familiar land. During your trip to Mashhad, stay in one of the best hotels near the shrine of Imam Reza and visit the attractions close to the shrine such as Goharshad Mosque, Gonbad Sabz Mosque, Pir Palanduz Tomb and the Holy Masroop Church.
Head to your next domestic and winter destination by buying Kashan plane tickets to the city of flowers and roses. Go to the Tabatabai house and in the historical house of the Boroujerdi people, refine the evolution of the original Iranian architecture from your perspective.
Now it is time to book a hotel in Rasht and buy a plane ticket; Go to the city of rain. Rasht is full of beauty, but this time look for the sights of this city in its natural attractions and the taste of its food; Roundabout in the UNESCO food capital this time connects you to this city through the window of prey.
If you can tolerate cold; Finish your Iran tour with Tabriz and travel to this spectacular city, very glorious. In Tabriz Bazaar, buy traditional Tabriz sweets as souvenirs and see the history of one of the most stubborn cities of Iran up close in attractions such as Ail Goli, Tabriz Citadel, and Tabriz Constitutional House.

Nice experience with 4 older kids (12-17 years). They all liked it even though the were not thrilled before. Would highly recommend to take warm clothes in the spring since it was really cold inside.

We booked a 3pm tour and arrived a bit early. They have clean bathrooms and hot coffee while you wait. The tour guide (can’t remember his nice but nice young guy) welcomed the group, got us helmeted and led us into the cave. He was a great guide, offering history and science facts about the cave’s formation, with funny jokes thrown in often to keep it enjoyable. We brought our two school aged children who enjoyed it as well. The tour lasts about an hour. The helmets have head lights and the cave is lit inside as well. Near the end you get to experience total darkness in the cave when they briefly turn off all the lights. We all enjoyed the tour and highly recommend it. One thing to note - you need to wear warm clothes. The cave is near freezing temperature with ice and snow inside!

The worst trip ever. Not worth spending your precious time nor money.
The tour bus did not pick us up at the right bus stop (we waited for 35 mins in vain) and didn’t even give us a call nor a message. They just ditched us. We had to take a cab and the company did not refund us for the cab ride nor even apologize to us.
This lava tunnel tour was too commercial centric and the view was not great. It’s not worth going there at all.
We recommend other company’s “Into the volcano tour” because it was much better with spectacular views and we had such an amazing experience.

Hello, I am very sorry to hear you did not have a good experience with us. I checked with our partners at Reykjavik Excursions, who operate the pickup, and they picked up 11 people from your hotel that morning. I am not sure what happened in your case, but the pickup bus from Reykjavik Excursions definitely came to the stop and the driver had you on the pickup list. Our staff at The Lava Tunnel then received a call from your hotel saying that you would arrive via taxi, but they did not explain what happened with your pickup and therefore our staff at the cave was not aware of your problems with the pickup when you arrived. We are always happy to help and try to resolve problems if we are made aware of them. Please contact us directly if you would like us to look into this matter further. Sincerely, David Arnar The Lava Tunnel

The cave was incredible and good to see. Beautiful and unique. Wish we could have gone deeper and spent more time inside the tunnel. We were only on the standard tour which takes you probably 150m into the tunnel. We got passed by people on the extreme tour who we envied as they rushed past us into the darkness.

Make sure you wear waterproof clothing and walking boots, because the inside of the cave is essentially raining - at least in march when we went. There was snow outside and inside the cave, but because it's all melting there is a lot of water falling from the ceiling which makes it icy and very wet! Our rucksacks got very wet and we were only in the cave for an hour.
The tour provides crampons and a helmet.

Definitely a must see- I'd just recommend going for the depper dive tour instead of the standard.

It was impressive to be in the tunnel through which actual lava had once been flowing. We visited on May 4 and it was still cold enough to see beautiful ice formations at the beginning of the tunnel. Our guide was very enthusiastic and did a very good job answering all questions and creating curiosity.
We reached the end of the walkable path relatively quickly, so don’t expect a rather long walk through the tunnel. In my view, the ticket price of 50€ was set too high given the rather short duration.

The lava tunnel was fascinating. I enjoyed seeing the icicles, the mounds of ice formed from dripping water and the lines carved into the rock from the lava flow. At one point, 400 metres into the cave, our tour guide switched out the lights to show us what complete pitch black looked like. The tour guide was very humorous and gave a lot of interesting information. Helmet with a light, crampons and hiking sticks were provided. I would recommend for anyone visiting Iceland.

The tunnel was cool, with beautiful colors and a somewhat varied appearance from place to place. The guide was not extremely engaging but I am also not really a fan of tour groups. It is a bit chilly in the tunnel, so you want to dress in layers. You get a hardhat with headlamp and walking sticks are available.

We had scheduled this for after our morning hike to the volcano and before we headed east on the Ring Road. Being that it was on our way and not too expensive, it was a decent stop. Doing it as a half-day tour from Reykjavik would not have been worthwhile for us.

If you are in the area or as part of another tour, I would recommend this.

We were a group of 10 and were impressed with the atmosphere inside the tunnel, especially when sunlight pierces through the holes in the roof. The sunlight creates an amazing fog effect with the wet environment. The tour guide was a bonus addition to tell some interesting facts how lava tunnels form.

We did a standard tour with the family (kids of 8 years old). In few words - AMAZING! For kids it wasn’t too long, not difficult and safe. In addition to all what others write (colors and majesty or power of nature), for me an indelible impression left few minutes proposed by our very lively guide: stay in full dark and total silence (only falling drops). Wow!!!
