Itinerary

Get off the beaten track in a comfortable 4WD with an informative, friendly and professional nature guide. Go where the traditional tourist circuits cannot to have a different view of the Volcanic Complex of Furnas. Depart your Ponta Delgada hotel between 8:30am and 9am and follow the South coast route of São Miguel Island, visiting, along the way, various viewpoints with fantastic views, as Pisão and Nª Srª da Paz in Vila Franca.

Discover Congro Volcano located on the plateau of Achada das Furnas. Take a 1Km walk through dense vegetation of Oak, Chestnut and Stinklaurel to view the beautiful Lagoa do Congro, a deep green water lagoon installed in an explosion crater type maar.

Follow to Castelo Branco viewpoint and experience a dazzling view of Furnas valley and the town of Vila Franca do Campo and its islet.

Head to Furnas Natural Park and visit Lagoa das Furnas, one of the largest lagoons of the archipelago, thermal and mineral springs, fumaroles and yet the mythical Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitórias, built in the 19th century in neo-Gothic style. See the traditional Furnas "Cozido" cooked in the natural fumaroles, at a temperature of about 100°C around the pot and about 70ºC therein.

Head to Furnas parish and relax in a hot thermal bath in the Thermal Pools “Poça da Beija", classified as Natural Patrimony (entrance not included) before enjoying lunch in a local restaurant where you can enjoy the Azorean gastronomy as the famous "Furnas Cozido" (own expense).

After lunch enjoy a small walk in Furnas parish, where you can visit and taste, thermal and mineral springs. See "Caldeiras" where a magnificent setting, provided by fumaroles, will wrap you in a fog of mystery and magical atmosphere.

Take the North coast route back to Ponta Delgada and stop at Pico do Ferro viewpoint where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Furnas Caldera.
On the way stop at Europe’s oldest, and currently only, remaining Tea plantation. Chance to visit Chá Gorreana’s boutique, factory, museum and enjoy a cup of fresh picked tea grown far away from industrial pollution in the lush emerald green hills.

Finish the tour at Stª Iria viewpoint before you will be dropped off back at your hotel around 6:00pm.

There shouldn't be an issue. The 4x4 was quite high, so it's a step up into it rather than having to bend down at all. It was very comfortable with a lot of leg room.

I don’t believe you will have any trouble. It was not a real high 4 wheel drive. I am short and I was able to get in and out fine.
