Sete Cidades Jeep Tour from Ponta Delgada
Discover the breathtaking beauty of the Caldeira de Sete Cidades on a Jeep tour from Ponta Delgada. The Sete Cidades volcanic complex on the western side of São Miguel Island is one of the more famous sites in the Azores. Stop at scenic lookouts such as Rocha de Relva and Pico do Carvão, and walk along the caldera rim to look at the twin lakes. Visit the village of Mosteiros and have the option to swim in natural thermal pools near the Ferraria coast on this informative tour.
What to Expect
Start the adventure by meeting a guide at a central location, then heading west out of Ponta Delgada. Stop at the Rocha de Relva lookout point, once used by whale hunters, for panoramic views and a great photo op. Then head to the Pico do Carvão viewpoint (or Empadadas Lakes, if the gate is open and visibility is good) for more panoramic views of the whole island.

Depending on visibility, travel along the trail of either the northeast or southwest section of the caldera rim. Both offer amazing views of the twin lakes inside the Sete Cidades caldera. Stop for a break at a local restaurant and enjoy a delicious meal of traditional Portuguese dishes.

Leaving the caldera, go down to the coast to quaint Mosteiros Village and the picturesque Escalvado viewpoint. If desired, head to Ferraria to enjoy a swim in the natural thermal pools there. On the way back to Ponta Delgada, pass through Arrifes, an area of pastureland where most of the milk on the island is produced.
