This tour was not as described. Its description suggests it is not a large bus tour. In fact it was. I was asked to be at pick up point at 8. 30. Our guide did not arrive til 8.45. In that time a small group of us had seen another company picking up small groups with individual drivers and we expected the same. Instead we were loaded onto a big coach. This proceeded to travel around the city picking people up. I spent 2 hrs on the bus. The coach was full, in fact, two people had to stand. We eventually started hiking 3hrs after our pick up time. Although we did see most of what was described by the tour, due to the 50+ people in the group there was an incredible amount of stopping and a slow pace. On most of the stops nothing was said by the guide with many left wondering what was going on. The guide's explanation of Etna and the volcanic area was detailed and descriptive but passing a phone around to show pictures amongst a large group did not work.

The previous day I had asked the guide in a message, what time we would return to Catania. I was informed 4 o'clock. I believed I would have plenty of time in hand, so I booked a street food tour for 6 o'clock. As we had not left Etna at 4.20 I did not believe I would make it in time with all the drop offs the bus would have to do. I pressured the guide and a minibus for myself and others that had to be back in Catania was organised thankfully.

The description also mentions 4x4 vehicles gaining access to areas that you can't get to by coach, I saw none of these. Despite Etna itself being an incredibly breathtaking place the day was overall very frustrating.

Challenging tour but awesome experience with nature
Jul 2021
This will be my critical review. First, face mask is not required and no hand sanitizer was available (which is written in the tour description).

A day before the trip, I and the rest of the travellers received a WhatsApp message to meet by 8.30AM with a google map link. We followed it and no guide was on the place. Around 9AM I sent a message and a guy called me saying they are few meters away. They gave a wrong link. I told the people to follow me and we met the guy.

I haven't heard him present his self to us but he greeted. We took a van, stopped to gasoline station to have some fuel, had a break to a small street food shop then the adventure started.

The guide was driving with an Italian couple in front of the van. He is usually talking to them in Italian. I can understand them but the people at the back were just silent because they don't speak the language. During the travel he just had 2 sentences in English to make at least the people smile.

When we arrived on the spot, we met all the other participants from other vans. The guides started giving trekking shoes and socks. I was handed with a pair of shoes and used, unwashed socks (while others had new socks). I changed then Marco started presenting theirselves, talking and explaining about the hike. That was the time I learned that the guide we have is named Ernesto.

Both of them are very experienced hikers. Marco is funny, keeps on teaching things about the surrounding nature from plants, rocks, and the volcano while we were hiking. Marco is very helpful too. He accompanied a couple who coudln't hike further.

We stopped on summit of one of the craters and had eaten our lunch. Afterwards, the group continued the journey to climb further. On that point, I started to be at the end of the line because I couldn't breathe very well and my knee was quite hurting. No one was complaining though and they usually stop to wait for me. There were also 2 persons from Parigi and a girl from Austria who were checking on me every now and then. They were very nice and friendly (God bless them). I apologized to the group for slowing down everyone. Ernesto said that it was okay and it was not a race anyway. Nice of him.

Few more hours and we finished the hike and had break in a bar to eat and drink. Most of the people bought water but some had beer and I had wine.

When we were changing shoes before getting back to the van Ernesto asked if I was okay. I said yes and I had a little wine. He asked me why and I said to relax a bit (plus others had beer and why can't I have wine?). Then he said I was "pazzo" (meaning crazy, we were talking in Italian). He put me at the back seat of the van and he repeated the word "pazzo" telling the other travellers what I did. By the way, I was very sober. I only had a glass of fresh cold wine.

Ernesto drove us back to the meeting place and he offered granite to all the passengers except me. He looked at me while he was drinking the granite then afterwards he went somewhere without saying goodbye to us. Since we didn't know where he was, everyone decided to go and all parted ways greeting each other.

All I can say is that the guides are very well experienced and knowledgeable with Etna, no questions asked. This is my very first tour from Trip Advisor and all I can say is that it has been very challenging for me in all sense.

Perfect - had wonderful time

Had a perfect time. Ernesto picked us from B&B from Catania. Both Marcus and Ernesto were very experienced and professional guides making sure every member of the tour were safe. Marcus told a lot historical information about Etna, also explained how volcanos work. Nor forgetting his sense of humour! Very tasteful and sensibly included in conversations! Had an amazing half day surrounded by miracle Etnas views...

Wonferful Etna views!
We had a wonderful trip. Ernesto met us near our accomodation, we picked up some sandwiches and then drove to the trailhead. Ernesto provided hiking poles and gear so it was great since we usually dont use hiking poles to hike but you will feel much better on the volcano with them:). The pace was great, not so difficult but very very rewarding. The route we walked had amazing views onto Etna and the weather was perfect. We descended via a volcano sandy slope which is amazingly fun and comfortable as its super soft and you can basically slide/ski (dont know how yo describe it:)) down the hill! Wonderful trip and Ernesto is a lovely and perfect guide for exploring Etna. Would definitely recommend!

Excellent tour
Dec 2019
Ernesto met us at our hotel and provided us with a solid day's experience viewing different aspects of Mount Etna and eventually hiking one of the craters. We were concerned about the possible language barrier since we only speak English, but Ernesto took care of us and made sure to repeat all of his interesting observations and details in perfect English for us to understand. I appreciated the opportunity to view and walk into a lava tube, as well as Ernesto's geologic knowledge that he shared with the group about Etna's history and the style of volcanism seen at Mt. Etna. When conditions got a bit snowy, we said goodbye to part of our tour group, but Ernesto continued on and took me and my companion to one of the summit craters, allowing us to hike around it for some time on our own. This was a great experience! Thank you, Ernesto.

Not-to-be-missed! Best Aetna Tour ever
Dec 2019 • Friends
I am myself from Catania and already had similar experience, but I can sincerely say that this is surely the best tour offered on the Aetna! Super reliable and expert guide, great value for money, very efficient organisation, totally customisable trips and unforgettable moments and views up on the volcano. As a group of 7, we climbed the volcano with the amazing guide Ernesto on the 26th of Dec 2019. We left before 9 am from our homes in Catania, where Ernesto came to pick us up with his jeep. Along the drive, Ernesto Stooped for us to have breakfast and buy some awesome paninis in the beautiful village of Milo. He took time to answer many of our questions on the volcano and the natural park itself, explaining in detail (in both Italian and English to our multilingual group) the geological history of and some curiosities on, the Aetna. He also gave us a choice of different paths and itineraries so as to cater to our needs and requests. We chose to go visit the 2002 craters. A relatively easy itinerary that provides scenic views to both experts and beginners. The walk lasted until around 4pm including the lunch break on top, and then he drove us all back to Catania. Not all of us had the necessary equipment, so he provided shoes, walking sticks and other useful equipment to have a safe and dry walk on the snow. Overall exceeding all of our high expectations, Ernesto has proved a truly friendly and reliable expert, who we thank dearly for the great day he let us have! Thank you so much! We will definitely be back for new volcanic adventures!
