Beneath the scarlet sky of Milan - a day in the footsteps of Pino Lella

By Bella Milano Tours
The life of Pino Lella, only recently revealed and narrated in the book "Beneath a scarlet sky", by the American writer Mark Sullivan, sounds like the script of a war movie. Yet it is all true. With our tour, you will walk in the footsteps of this Italian hero during the most dramatic years of Milan, following his adventures in the wounded city occupied by the Nazis. With us, you will visit some of the most fascinating highlights of Milan: the imposing cathedral, Duomo, where the body of cardinal Schuster, a key figure for Pino, was buried; the medieval Sforza Castle, in whose courtyards many people suffered a horrible death; the Monumental Cemetery, an open air museum of funerary art; the Memorial of Shoah, an emotional testament to the persecution of the Jews; piazzale Loreto, home of the most tragic memories of the city. We will end the tour on a happy note: with a drink at Diana Hotel, where Pino celebrated the end of the Nazi occupation. Some public transport will be used.

    Milan Private Tour Guide
We had four great days in Milan and used a private tour guide for the first time. We used Bella Milano Tours (email: We had a 4 hour walking-tour of the city and a 4 hour culinary tour. Both were great, and the tour guides, Valeria and Mirella, were wonderful. I highly recommend them.

    The BEST Guide in Milan!!
Valeria was one of the absolute best walking guides we have ever had the pleasure of working with. First, she is highly personable, engaging and full of knowledge. But her ability to interact with every family member in our group whilst navigating the fascinating streets of Milan— was priceless. It felt as if an old friend were showing us her town. The other critical skill that Valeria us superb at, is her ability to be flexible, navigate on the fly and be responsive to what interests you value most. We ate, walked, drank, shopped and visited historic churches and sections of Milan that I’m sure we’d never have discovered on our own. And all in a day!!! We can safely say that in Milan, you want her showing you this vibrant and beautiful city. We loved our entire day and made a wonderful new friend in the process.

Mirella made us feel like temporary locals!
This afternoon tour was a key highlight of our two-week trip to Italy! This was our first visit to Italy. We asked Mirella to show us some of the neighborhoods and local food. We knew we'd see a lot of monuments over the course of our visit and wanted something more immersive. She totally delivered! We went into small markets that we never would have been brave enough to try with my B1 Italian. We tried dishes that the Milanese would eat at several local shops. I'll never have pasta that good again in my life. We felt like locals/family at a salumieri and again at a pastificio. We chatted, we laughed, we ate well, and had a wonderful glass of wine while browsing at the final stop. A perfect tour!

    Highly recommended!!
We loved our coffee tour with Mirella on our last day in Milan before going up north. She is not only meeting us at our place, she was able to accommodate last minute schedule change. The tour was entertaining and educational. She seems to tailor the content as we went based on our questions and interests.

    Outstanding tour in Milan
We planned to be in Milan for only a day, so we scheduled a tour of Milan with Mirella. We had a list of things we wanted to see and she managed to do those and add other things we hadn’t even thought about. She had even managed to obtain tickets to the Last Supper. Her explanations of each location was extremely good. Above all we appreciated her calm ability to handle the impacts to our tour route because of fashion week. She took time to show us how to use the subway system and suggested a wonderful restaurant for dinner.

    An outstanding experience
My manager and I did a tour driven by Mirella: the experience was outstanding, Mirella is a very passionate guide, with an excellent English and with a special empathy. We visited the roof of the Duomo (Terrazze), the inside of the cathedral, we walked in the Galleria and we took an old-style tram to go to the Castle. The last stop was in Brera. I do recommend this agency, professionalism and passion are distinctive.

    Mirella - The super guide!
This is the third time my family have been lucky enough to walk the streets of a beautiful Italian city with Mirella - twice in Milan and this latest time in Turin And yet again we have enjoyed her extensive local knowledge, her good humour and her ability to find those interesting local spots that you didnt even realise you needed to see to experience italian life. Certainly she points out the big attractions - which are easy to see on your own. But who knew we would have so much fun in the chocolate shop, the wonderful cafe with enormous chandeliers or the little antique shop selling authentic 007 movie posters! And then lunch in a crowded food hall showcasing some of Turins best restaurants at a fraction of the price. Without a doubt these tours will introduce you to a wonderful city , a warm hearted and generous italian guide and should not be missed

    2 Magnificent Days in Milan
My wife and I were lucky enough to find Mirella as our private tour guide for 2 days in Milan. If you're searching for a lovely, passionate and highly knowledgeable guide then look no further. We found Mirella to be the perfect guide. On time, flexible and showed us all of the sites that we had arranged with her prior to our arrival in Milan. She even arranged to purchase us tickets in advance to view the painting of The Last Supper. We will never forget Milan and the wonderful time we had with Mirella. Mark & Debra

Milan made more marvelous by Mirella
We spent 2 wonderful days with a personalized tour of Milan and Lake Como with Mirella. The cities were both magnificent but certainly enhanced by Mirella’s knowledgeable commentary and perpetual smile. Her background in archeology, art and history complemented everything that we saw. Her enthusiasm and passion for her region was contagious. Without question, because of Mirella, our visit was outstanding. She is more than a tour guide, she is a friend. Thank you, Mirella.

    Aperitivo Tour
Our group of 4 greatly enjoyed our Aperitivo Tour of Milan with Mirella. We had a few short days in Milan and we saw and learned so much on this tour. The walk was perfectly paced with food and drinks intermixed with cultural sights and history. Mirella made us feel as if we were touring the city with an old friend. Thanks so much!

    Fantastic tour and company
My friend and I visited Milan in May and had a very tight schedule due to flight times etc so were keen to pack in as much as possible. I contacted this company via email regarding their dungeons, mummies and bones tour and the communication was fantastic. They even updated us as a few of the places on the tour close or open at different times so to make the most of our experience we had to change the day we went and everything was done without any difficulty. We even got a little discount as one of the places would be closed on the day we went. On the day of the tour we were met by Mirella in the main square and she had EVERYTHING sorted for us including entrance tickets/local public transport tickets (very thoughtful as this was our last day so we had already done A LOT of walking) she was also very helpful during our trip back to the central station, showed and even accompanied us back so we were able to catch our bus to the airport in time. The tour itself was fantastic and Mirella was a very knowledgeable guide with lots of interesting things to impart to us. We saw everything we wished to and more and Mirella was such a lovely bubbly person willing to accommodate us even for toilet breaks without any problems what so ever. It absolutely made our holiday and as the tour was private we feel we learned so much!!! Very reasonable in their pricing also. I would HIGHLY recommend both this company/guide and tour for any future trips to Milan and beyond as rumour has it there is also a guided tour of Venice available. DON'T MISS THIS. Thank you so much for a wonderful experience!!!

    Freezing in Milano!
Although it was a very cold day in Milano, Valeria was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic about sharing her beautiful city. Having our own private local guide was such a great experience and really not expensive when compared to group tours. We were able to tailor our afternoon to include sites we really wanted to see and let Valeria show us what we should see as well. She has such a warm friendly personality, it is truly like having personal friend showing you around Milan.

This book tour would not be possible at all without fantastic Valeria Andreoli from BellaMilano who guided us throughout Milan beautifully almost five full hours!

It was amazing to mix the real streets, all the buildings, the castle and the cathedral, hotels, the train station and even the monumental cemetery with our vividly built images of all the places we already formed from the book and Mark Sullivan's amazing narrative.

We thoroughly enjoyed this tour of Milan after having read, “Beneath the Scarlet Sky.” Not only did we enjoy our guide’s thorough and historical knowledge of this jewel of an Italian city, but we came to appreciate how a young boy in Milan was able to live up to the challenges of his time and with courage became an unlikely hero and saved lives during the Nazi occupation. We appreciated our knowledgeable and friendly guide who went out of her way to help us appreciate Milan and Pino Lella’s amazing story.

Happy to recommend this tour! Joe and Debra Vought
