Not to our liking at all
The Vatican museums check in area is so busy, chaotic and noisy that we got off to a poor start. The gardens are quite interesting but the bossy guide kept on at us (only a very small group) to keep together, wear your (uncomfortable) earpiece at all times (even though it was perfect easy to hear her) warning we’d be forcibly removed if we strayed an inch from her side. Then once that was over we were subjected to a long, dull lecture on what we would see in the sistene chapel, all carried out in the very noisy main area. It was extremely hot and she noticed me fidgeting and rudely said if we weren’t interested we could go to the chapel on our own (surely she could have said this at the start) and vaguely waved us in the direction to go. In the end we didn’t bother as the crowds were enormous and heat oppressive. I realise this is not the fault of the tour but perhaps they could limit numbers a little.

Love the place but, it was difficult to hear the guide and my VR head set stopped working.
Very cool historic place. But...the tour was disappointing. It was difficult to understand the tour guide. The cavernous rooms made it difficult to hear her. She also had a strong Italian accent and she spoke very quickly which made it challenging to try to decipher what she was saying when I could hear her. Distributing ear buds to the group so you can actually hear would be a great idea. I spoke to the staff at the end of the tour and they said they didn't think it was possible to use ear buds for the tour group because they didn't think they worked underground. Too many tickets were sold through the Domus Aurea website so not everyone got to have the AR experience because there was a limited number of AR head sets. Mine stopped working in the middle of the presentation. It was disappointing. Also, do not buy your tickets through Viator or any other company. You can buy them directly through the Domus Aurea website and they are much cheaper.

Bad Experience with VR Tour--Be Careful!
Viator sold us a VR tour on a date that they didn't offer VR tours. Now I can't get my money back. Verify with Domus Aurea that the VR tour is actually offered on the date you want to go.

Be very careful about booking the VR experience through Viator
Be careful--Viator may sell you a tour that does not exist! We signed up and paid for the VR experience at Domus Aurea. When we arrived at the site, the staff there said that the VR experience was not offered on that date and that the tour company should not have sold us the VR tour on that date. I have been back and forth with my credit card company. Viator insisting that the service was provided and it was not! The bottom line is: If you want the VR tour, do not trust Viator's dates because they may not be right and you may be out hundreds of dollars like me. Verify with the location itself the days that the VR experience are offered.

    Tour Operator a No-Show!
Waited 40 minutes in vain for someone to exchange our vouchers for tickets. Domus Aurea officials even had our names on the list, but no one from company ever met us. Called tour operator several times from site when things began looking sketchy. No answer! $125 down the drain!

Expert guide, great way to start your stay in Rome
Valerian is an expert guide. We saw everything. Great way to start your stay in Rome. We started in the day and ended in the evening so we saw some of the sites lit for the night. Really beautiful.

Poor experience, don’t waste your money.
Very disappointed, the hours of service were limited, we used the bus twice over two days because it stopping running early both days. Staff on bus useless, gave out a brochure to contact operator, said it was off season hours. Waste of $180 USD for two couples, stay away.

    Great option for rainy days
We got the two day pass and ended up using it only for one day - definitely a good option for when it’s raining.

    Not good!
The Vatican changed our time on the morning we were supposed to go. The time they gave us did not work since we had another commitment. I would not recommend buying tickets through this source.

Good bus tour after initial ticket mix up.
When I got on the bus and showed my ticket, bought online through Trip Advisor, the guide said it was not the right ticket. I said where I had bought it and that it was for this bus tour. She messaged her office and while waiting for answer she said I could stay on bus till next stop but would have to get off if it wasn't correct ticket. Eventually she said there were two different tickets and mine was ok!! Not the best welcome to Rome!!

Great guide; tour not quite as advertised (no VR)
Our guide (Lana?) on October 9 at 2 p.m. (English language tour) was outstanding. Good English, lots of factual information but presented without dryness or pedantry made for a very quick hour. I had read that there were to be AR goggles toward the end of the tour (even the ad here says “…with Virtual Reality) and was disappointed that these never materialized. If by “Virtual Reality” the description refers to the video displays projected on the walls, someone should understand that this is not what “virtual reality” means today. So a bit of false advertising there. I was surprised by the extent of Egyptomania present in early Impreial Rome.

Seeing the contents of the museum confirmed my feelings about the Catholic church. Corruption, theft, pedophilia for over 2000 years. Preaching about aiding the poor and here they sit with billions of dollars in art and artifacts - disgusting . And they run their own tours raking in even more wealth.
The breakfast was tasty and thats about the only good thing I can say

I booked this tour as part of a trip to Rome for Moms birthday and it did not disappoint.

It was an early start; we arrived at the Vatican Museums entrance for about 7.15am and were let it when it opened at 7.30am. We sorted our tickets and recieved ear pieces to use during the tour. These were connected to the tourguides microphone, so that even if you were at the back of the group, you could still hear her. I'd never seen/used anything like them before and thought they were a brilliant idea.

Ours was the first tour group (less than 20 people) to head into the museums so throughout the tour, despite other groups following us, we had the galleries and importantly, the Sistine Chapel, to ourselves which made for a truly magical experience.

Our tour guide, Roberta was amazing. Her knowledge of the Vatican, its museums and its history was never ending and her passion for this particular piece of Italian culture/history shone through. My Mom and I were often lucky enough to be at the front of the group and Roberta always made a point of engaging with us and talking to us directly, which I really appreciated as I had booked the tour for my mom more than anything. This wasn't specific to us though, Roberta treated everyone the same. The group was always mixing, with different people making it to the front at different times and she always made sure to give everyone the same amount of attention and engagement.

At the end of the tour, we had breakfast in the museum courtyard, which was some of the nicest food I had during my time in Rome. I was surprised at how much you got, not only a continental breakfast but pastries and unlimited pancakes, jams, bread rolls and drinks. It was well worth the money.

As someone who loves art history, it was a fantastically interesting and rewarding tour and despite not being a religious person, the Vatican and its museums became a highlight of the whole trip for me.

I wish I could rate zero stars. Rome Tour Tickets was extremely rude. When we arrived 15 minutes earlier than the voucher stated apparently we were late, but apparently it didn’t matter because they didn’t have our names on their hand written list dispute the fact that I had a voucher from TripAdvisor with my confirmation. He then stated that it was my problem to figure out with TripAdvisor. If you’re booking is with Rome Tour Tickets just cancel now and save yourself the stress. I would never recommend this company -10/10
