- GrandTour099098455900 contributionsWorth visitingVisiting the Colosseum in Rome was absolutely unforgettable! The moment you step inside, you can feel the weight of history all around you. It’s wild to think about how this massive arena was built so long ago and still stands strong today. Walking through the ancient stone corridors and looking out over the arena floor, you can almost hear the crowds and imagine the epic battles that once took place there. The architecture is mind-blowing, and the views from the upper levels are incredible—perfect for snapping some amazing photos. I definitely recommend getting a guided tour or audio guide to really appreciate all the history. It’s such a cool experience, whether you’re a history buff or just exploring Rome. Totally worth it and a must-see if you're in the city!Written 17 January 2025

- philippam6670 contributionsSights good, tour could be improvedThis tour was good, but not great. The actual attractions were interesting. I would've preferred the tour guide to spend less time talking about related stories/myths and more time explaining the sights in front of me as I sometimes felt like we walked past a lot (especially in Palatine Hill/the Roman Forum).Written 14 January 2025
- rosie09000 contributionsDefinitely worth doing!Being on a relatively tight time schedule, booking this tour which included multiple popular spots was great. Our guide was very knowledgeable and really took the time to ensure we were all able to look at the information provided. I did feel that the headset used perhaps wasn’t as clear as another tour we had (and paid less for) so this was my only gripe. Definitely worth booking.Written 14 January 2025

The star rating itself goes to the tour guide which is why I gave it a 5! The tour guide himself was absolutely amazing! It’s been afew days now so I have actually forgotten his name but he was born in America. Full of knowledge and absolutely hilarious.
Would I recommend the tour…no.
First of all by ‘no more than 15 people’ they mean around 42 people. You’re travelling on a coach sized bus and it’s generally full.
Secondly the entire day is rushed. It’s too much to fit into one day if you want to see anything in detail except Pompeii which you do spend quite a bit of time at.
Thirdly if you’re doing this day trip to see the Amalfi coast definitely do not do it. You don’t get to see the coast directly or walk on it or even get close to it. You see the coast from a very far away point and you can take some long view landscape pictures. The beach itself is mostly private or you need to pay to walk on it and to get to the beach from the towns you stop in it takes a long time and you don’t get that much time to do it. You certainly won’t be swimming if that’s what you were hoping for.
We stopped in Sorrento instead of Positano as it was so busy but it did say that in the fine print so it shouldn’t have been a surprise to anyone on the trip and it was still really nice. The locations themselves were wonderful stopping points I really did enjoy the day however going by the pictures and stuff I genuinely thought we would actually see the amalfi coast properly.
You will be late home. Every tour I have been on has run over time.
Overall I think the tour guides with city wonders are all great but this particular tour tries to squeeze too much into one day. If you want to see the Amalfi coast then find a way there and stay for a night or two or do a day tour purely dedicated to that one stop!

Ask any expert and they will tell you that trying to do the Amalfi Coast, Positano and Pompeii in one day is too much. Perhaps. It is about a 3 hour bus ride each way with another hour of so shuttling down to Positano, so you really don't get much of a chance to do anything. But it was sufficient. I was more unhappy about the time spent in Pompeii. We were late getting there because City Wonders has other tours and they were trying to synchronize shuttle busses and the other tour was late and that set off a chain reaction. When we got to Pompeii the tour guide as really anxious to have us eat at a certain restaurant where the food was just average (but fairly cheap). He said, "you guys deserve to eat." Well, I took the trip to see Pompeii and given a choice I would have seen more Pompeii and less time in a tourist trap restaurant.
But, if you only have a day and you want to at least get a short tour I would say it was okay. Just know you aren't going to spend 4 hours crawling in the ruins. You are going to get an hour.

My solo date of travel was on the 19th of November with Roberto and Antonio.
Roberto is very knowledgeable over the history and very attentive to everyone. He's an amazing story teller and he suggest a good Napoli Pizza, I think he was also lenient with us when we ate the pizza 😉.
Pompeii will blow you away, Enrico, the Tour Guide mentioned how most other structures are just buildings but this is like walking into a time machine, because it's a city! I'm glad I took this tour.
Amalfi, is beautiful and the weather was great, do avoid the tourist restaurants, unless you so choose to eat there. I personally made my way up the central road, and I found a mini market with the same wine and beer the restaurants are serving for far less 😬 so I suggest buying a Lacrima Christi Bottle there and some of the local products.
Overall, amazing trip, I would do it again! Roberto is an amazing guide.
Antonio is an amazing driver, Bravo to both!

This should be called a jogging tour as you are literally rushed through Pompeii and the actual time we were allotted in Positano was 20 minutes. The itinerary makes it sound like you’ll enjoy time in Positano to have lunch, enjoy the beach etc. but in reality it’s just enough time to walk into town, grab an ice cream, snap a few pictures and it’s back up the hill. I think it’s called City Wonders because you’ll “wonder” what happened to the tour you paid for. The whole trip felt more like a shakedown as the bus’ first stop is 1 hour after you leave Rome where we paid €15 for 2 croissants and OJ. On the way to Pompeii the tour guide strongly pushes the purchase of a pizza to be eaten on the bus stating it’s much to expensive in Positano. The pizza was €10 and was awful and eating on the bus is ridiculous. As it turned out a much better pizza in Positano is €12 the reality is there’s no time to order and eat it. After leaving Positano there’s a 30 minute stop that’s not on the itinerary at what I’ll refer to as a lemonade stand and gift shop for another shake down. This time should have been allotted to Positano which is what you paid for. Finally, another stop at the same location on the way out for “wine tasting” which was just another attempt to get more €’s out of you. We were in Europe for 17 days and this was by far the worst tour, in fact the worst tour I’ve ever been on. Strongly suggest you avoid this tour. I’m certain this review won’t be posted and I’m also certain the vast majority of the great reviews are not real.

Dear jyllb2022,
We have carefully reviewed your review and we are sorry to hear that our Pompeii and Positano tour didn’t live up to your expectations.
This tour's itinerary includes many stops to let us see as much as possible of Pompeii and the Amalfi coast in one day!
However, we have passed on your feedback to our Product Management team and we can assure you that they will act on your advice to improve our tours going forward.
Kindest regards,
Federica B.

I am copy and pasting the email that I sent to the company that this tour is booked with.
This email is with great concern to a tour booked with your company City Wonders. We booked the Positano, Pompeii, and Amalfi Coast tour leaving Rome on Saturday July 2, 2022. We, and 2 others in our group checked in with the same guide in the piazza meeting point. Once we got on the bus this guide stated that we would be going to Amalfi, Positano and Pompeii. The guide realized that there were not enough seats on the bus (which there was one open seat for the one person to sit) and he went from the front of the bus to the back where we were sitting, the guide stated that the other 2 in our group did not check in with him and they checked in with the other guide on the other bus. He said “She must have ninja checked you in” when she was nowhere near us to hear the name for the booking This was in fact not true as we checked in with the same guide at the exact same time. Naturally, we went to the other bus to stay with the other half of our group, not aware of the fact that the bus was very poor in quality versus the bus that we were kicked off of (see attached pictures for reference) which was a Mercedes bus. Also not aware of the fact that this other bus is in fact not going to Pompeii, Positano, and Amalfi Coast but instead going to Sorrento Coast. Once this was announced everyone was expressing their dissatisfaction with this change that not a single person on the bus was aware of before the cancellation window and before getting on this bus. When at the meeting point this morning, we were greeted and told that we all (70 of us) booked the same tour we were just going to be split into two groups for bus seating because we were taking two busses. When booking this tour titled, “Pompeii, Amalfi Coast, and Positano Guided Small-Group Day Trip from Rome” one is able to assume when booking that the tour would be going to Pompeii, Amalfi Coast and Positano, this is in fact false advertising. This is in fact not a “Small-Group”. There is 70 people that got unluckily split apart to go to two different places unknowingly until we were on the bus. The advertisement for booking on Trip Advisor states that there will be no more than 24 people on this tour. If that were true, we would all be on one bus and going to the three places that we booked the excursion to go to. If we had not left the first coach bus with the other half of our group, we would unknowingly be split up for the duration of the whole day as we were going to different places. This decision that was made should have been sent in an email to all who booked before the 24 hour cancellation window so they could decide if they wanted to cancel for a refund or still go to a different destination than advertised. Paying over $300 for a tour that was split into two groups where 30 people got the short stick going somewhere that they did not book to go, lies under the definition of a scam. I will not be booking anymore tours with your company, I will leave reviews on all platforms that you are involved with. I am requesting a refund of some stature for this horrible experience. We have booked plenty of tours in Italy so far and this is a full case of false advertisement.
DO NOT book this tour. You probably won’t get what you paid for.

We are extremely disappointed with the CityWonders Pompeii and Positano tour. Numerous circumstances lead to this:
1. We were notified at the start of the tour at 7:10am that we would not be going to Pompeii due to the national holiday; the guide stated the company was just notified that the archeological site was going to be closed due to the NATIONAL holiday. This is something that occurs each year and yet the company still booked a full tour without any mention of this at the time of booking or in any communication afterwards. -a notification should have been sent out to communicate this change in advance. We were not even noticed upon check-in, only right at the scheduled start.
2. There was one guide for 60+ people. The guide went back and forth between the TWO large tour buses.
3. First stop was Positano. We had 1 hour and 30 minutes to grab a drink, snack, and experience the city. We were advised not to eat in Positano and instead wait and eat in Sorrento where we would have more time and the prices would be lower.
4. We arrived in Sorrento at 3:15pm with scheduled departure at 5pm. Many restaurants were closed or closing at that hour so we decided to stay with the group for lunch.
5. We were advised to eat lunch at a specific restaurant that is a family owned, authentic Italian with delicious fire oven pizza where we would receive a “special” rate or we could order al carte
6. We opted for al carte. By the time we were served our food and ate, it was 4:15pm, not leaving any time to see the city. We expected to have limited time in the town, since we were eating lunch within that time window. We had to asked for our check 3 times and when we received the bill, were charged a €5 per person service fee which is not outlined on the menu nor communicated by the server or tour guide. Some of the other guests on the trip were charged €10 per person.
7. This entire trip took 16 hours. Of that, we had about 1 hr 45 min in Positano and 1 hour 45 min in Sorrento. The entirety of the time in Sorrento was spent in the recommended restaurant.
This was more of an over priced, large group shuttle service than a tour. Other than a few facts listed off during the ride, there was nothing that could really be described as a “tour”.
We utilized CityWonders for another tour and were pleased with that experience, however this was the worst group tour we have ever experienced.
We recommend booking a private taxi for the day.

A wonderful day! Pompeii is incredible, and there's so much to see, so having a guide was very helpful. It was fascinating to see it in person, and it's far larger than we all thought. Positano was beautiful, although we wish we had more time there. We rushed to the bottom and then started working our way back up right away in order to make it back to the bus in time. We had enough time to stick our toes in the water and grab sandwiches and gelato to go while we walked back up the hill and efficiently shopped. Yes, it's a lot of time on the bus, but the bus is comfortable, has air conditioning, and even foot rests to raise up if you want them. The ride from Pompeii to Positano is one to remember, especially as you make it to the Amalfi Coast. The views are unbelievable, and the skill of the bus driver is to be highly admired. Bring some Zofran or Dramamine if you tend to get motion sick! We did transfer to some smaller buses as we got close, becaus the big bus can only go so far. There is also no bathroom on the big bus, but we stopped halfway to Pompeii for a bathroom break, and then halfway on the trip back at the same rest stop. The rest stop does include a little shop for coffee and snacks, plus some little groceries or souvenirs. Our guide Sonia was very friendly and helpful the entire day, and we got a separate guide for Pompeii who was very good, but unfortunately I don't remember his name. There was the offer of pizza for 10 euros per person, that was ready for pickup after Pompeii to eat on the bus on the way to Positano as a lunch option. The menu seemed limited and I'd heard that the pizza place was more of a tourist trap, so our group passed on the pizza. All departures were very timely, so make sure you get back to the bus on time! Also, the group was large and filled up two buses, but we broke up into smaller groups of 24 in Pompeii. It would've been nice to have a few minutes after Pompeii to buy some souvenirs, but sadly there was no time. It's not an option in the dropdown, but our group was a family group of six adults. Overall, this trip is definitely worth it, and our whole group had a wonderful time!

Our tour guide Semih was super knowledgeable about the areas of Naples, Amalfi Coast, and Pompeii. He was really engaging and funny, while effectively teaching us about the history of the areas. However, we only spent 1.5hrs in Positano which was just enough time to go for a swim, and get some gelato, so some people may want to spend longer there as it is beautiful. We stopped off at a limoncello factory which was cool to see, and we got to try the limoncello which was a bonus that i wasn’t expecting. The local guide in Pompeii, Rob was also really engaging and knowledgeable, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed his tour. overall, i’d recommend this tour for people that want to see the Amalfi Coast/ Positano from Rome and only have a day to do so.

We had booked our day trip before we traveled to Rome and were a bit nervous as to how it would all work out. We needn't have worried! The weather was great, Chiara, our tour guide was extremely personable, pleasant to deal with and very knowledgeable and passionate about promoting the beauties of her country to our group. During the journey, she shared fascinating anecdotes which I enjoyed listening to and she went out of her way to pre-order delicious pizzas for us, to be ready for collection when we completed the visit to Pompei. She is one of those rare people who thoroughly enjoy their job and strive to do it professionally and with pride.
We had about an hour and a half in Pompei and the same amount of time in Positano, which was sufficient, I think. We also stopped in Casino where we were able to buy local delicacies and have refreshments.
All in all, I recommend this trip as it was an excellent value for money and a great way to see beautiful places which would haven't been possible to reach by public transport from Rome in one day.

The tour was frustrating. The drive in took 5 hours because they stopped at multiple tourist traps along the way. Because of this we only had two hours in Sorrento. While on the bus, the tour guide allowed us to opt into lunch claiming that it would be cheaper and faster, giving us more time. Instead, it was expensive, slow, and did not include the food she claimed it would. It led to us having almost no time in Sorrento to explore.
The stop in Sorrento was also a surprise compared to the description given (which claimed we would either stop in positano or amalfi). Furthermore, the description claimed we would stop at Pompeii before visiting the coast. This isn't a huge deal, but the description of this event NEEDS to be updated. One final complaint about the description is that it said the groups would be under 24 people, but our group had over 40.
Pompeii was great, and the tour guide helped improve our mood tremendously. It is the only reason why I gave the experience two stars instead of one.

What time do we have to be at the departure time and what time are we coming back. Also how long is the drive?

We will be taking a train to Naples. Is it possible to get picked up from (and returned to) the train station for this tour? Or, is transportation only provided starting in Rome?
Written 15 November 2024
That’s correct. You need to book a different tour that starts in Naples. Make sure you allow plenty of time in Pompeii as it’s huge and one hour is no where enough time. Also consider the traffic getting in and out of Positano. Most days it’s hell so allow time to get there and back🙏

So sorry just seen this now as Ive been away again. There isn't a toilet on the bus but there is a scheduled stop approx 90 mins into the journey in both directions for use of rest rooms and refreshments. Both host and driver are very accomodating also.

We went to Positano and Pompeii in March on a tour with City Wonder. The trip was from 8:30 in the morning to 10:30 at night. A very long day! Positano though is about 4 hours from Rome. We stopped once on the way and coming home, in Casino at a small store where we could get refreshments and take advantage of restrooms. LOVED the trip and would love to go back to Positano and spend more time!

I am traveling with a 5 month old, if I book her along with me will she have a seat on the bus also and need her carseat or will I have her on my lap/in her carrier?

Following, have the same question. I’ve read elsewhere that infants would need a car seat for long distance bus rides. I see no note of it anywhere here.

Hello, when it recommends moderate physical ability is this linked to the amount of walking or the difficulty level. If that makes sense? I am travelling with my parents and my dad is in his late 50s with a repaired knee injury. He is able to walk long distances fine but if there are a lot of stairs/steps throughout it may be too hard? Can we go at our own reasonable pace, or I read we get dropped off at the top of Positano and have to walk down and back up is that correct?

lots of steps to go up and down! My dad had both knees replaced and he would not have been able to do this trip. I'm 75 with good knees and it was not an issue for me.

I have read on another website this tour goes to Sorrento in winter months (Nov-Mar) instead of Positano - has anyone experienced this? Tia!
