Ruins of Pompeii & Mt Vesuvius Volcano Day Trip from Rome

2 travellers
Hike up Mount Vesuvius and then explore the UNESCO-listed ruins of Pompeii on a must-do day trip from Rome! Going at a steady pace, the hike includes a walk on the ridge of Italy’s famously feisty volcano, allowing incredible views down into the crater itself. After a pizza lunch, head to Pompeii to see the havoc that Mount Vesuvius reaped on it in AD 79. Tour the UNESCO-listed excavations, seeing fossils and well-preserved ruins while hearing the horrors that befell this intriguing ancient city.

Mt Vesuvius is inaccessible from November 20 to March 31. During this time, the hike is replaced with a visit to the iconic City of Naples. We’ll take a panoramic bus tour and have some free time to walk around the city centre.
  • Book ahead to guarantee a spot on this popular tour from Rome
  • Hike to the summit of Mt. Vesuvius with a guide who knows the way
  • Learn about the ancient sites from your guide
  • Don’t worry about entrance fees—they’re included in the tour price
What to Expect
Your tour of Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius starts with pickup in central Rome.  Board an air-conditioned vehicle, and make the ride over to Mt. Vesuvius. At Mt. Vesuvius, your guide leads you on a hike to the top of the old volcano. At the top, catch sight of the Bay of Naples, and sights inside the crater. Please note from late November to late March, you’ll explore the National Archaeological Museum of Pompeii instead of the short hike.  Afterward, take a break and enjoy a pizza lunch before making your way over to Pompeii—a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former Roman city. Once you arrive in Pompeii, follow your guide on a tour, and learn the history of the area. See the Forum and Teatro Grande as you go. Your tour ends with a ride back to Rome.

We took this trip on our last day in Rome. Our guide was Antonella and she was wonderful. Marco did an excellent job driving. We brought our three children ages 8, 6, and 10 months. They are great, experienced travelers already, so we knew they’d...More

Shorts are absolutely okay. Dress for the weather. Just shoes could be a problem if they aren't somewhat sturdy. It's an uphill, dusty climb with loose rocks.

Yes, children can go on the trip but there is a lot of walking and unevenness at times. Depending on the time of year, it can be extremely hot with limited shade.
