The tour starts with the group's gathering from Piazza Pascoli with an engaging historical / architectural and anthropological introduction of the Sassi with the background of the marvelous view over the Sasso Caveoso; The tour continues towards the Caveoso district in a continuous succession of ramps and stairs that constitute the roofs of the caves below; the wide field of view allows the eye to wander and give the eyes and the heart breathtaking panoramic views of the Sasso Caveoso and the Rione “alle Malve or“ Casalnuovo ”, the Murgico plateau and the imposing karst fracture that constitutes the canyon of Gravina di Matera. Arrived on the bottom of Via Bruno Buozzi the tour continues with a visit to a typically furnished cave-dwelling, which will allow us to have the perception of the "sad humanity" of this rural world and to understand how it lived in cohabitation with the animals until in the late fifties. Then we continue to visit the two rock churches, located on the "Rupe dell'Idris" and from which we can enjoy another suggestive panorama of the Sassi, Santa Maria dell 'Idris and San Giovanni in Monterrone, the latter completely excavated in the rock and casket of Italo-Greek monasticism with precious iconographic evidence of the century X-XIII. As an alternative to the churches mentioned above, instead of these, the visit of the rock church of Santa Lucia alle Malve, located in the homonymous district, could be included in the tour, which represents the first example of Benedictine frequentation in Matera of the VIII century. d. C. and which houses precious testimonies of Byzantine frescoes dated from the 10th to the 13th century. After the Visit of the Rock Churches it will be possible to visit a workshop and handicraft laboratory of ceramics and papier-mâché where the typical objects of the Matera tradition and popular culture will be illustrated by the direct voice of the craftsman. Finally, after traveling through time and space from the Paleolithic to the present day, the tour ends with a small tasting of typical products in a specially recreated environment.

      Not What Was Promised
There were good things about this tour. The sunset was beautiful and the walk fun. But it was a real disappointment for our group. There was an English speaking guide, as promised, but the expert in the area spoke only Italian. He spoke extensively to the English guide but the English speaking guide did not translate. In the end, they were only speaking to each other. We did not go into any caves. The guide said he needed 24 hour advanced notice to enter the caves but we made our reservation weeks ahead of time. The driver who took up to the park texted while he was driving us. I could not believe it. The trip was not at all what was promised. I do not recommend it.

Beautiful historial old village.... unique to Italy
Stopping in Matera was a last minute add to our travels in this area of Italy. it. We were so glad we did. We took a private walking tour which really was worth the money. We learn a lot about the history of this place. At night its beautiful with the soft lighting that has been placed on all these centuries old dwellings. (20,000 people lived here) Make sure you go inside the rock church and the museum that lets you see what life was like living in these hillside dwellings. The amazing part to me as people lived in these primitive dwelling until 1951.

      Do not trust this company
Please do not use this Company Four of us jointly booked a tour to be provided in English starting at 2.30pm with a maximum of 20 people. We paid double the price the company charged for the same tour in Italian at approx £60 a head for a 2.5 hour tour What we were provided was way short of expectations it started at 2.45 but we were then left by the road side in the park waiting for a guide finally the tour started 30 minutes late The group size exceeded the maximum with over 25 people on it We were the only 4 English speaking participants on the tour which the guide provided in English and Italian Although the guide worked very hard to provide a tour in both languages it was impossible for her to fulfill what we had bought We paid a premium for a tour in English not one in two languages We paid for a maximum group size of 20 We paid for a tour that started at 2.30pm not half an hour late The company despite my complaints say the tour was as advertised and no refund is due what so ever I have used tour guides all round the world and this is the first occasion I have been treated so appallingly and had to complain The guide was not the problem it is the TOUR COMPANY- do not touch with a barge pole they do not honour the contract they enter into I am taking action through my credit card company but this is an outrageous waste of my time and detracts from what should have been a memorable tour. The park it self and Matera are both wonderful fortunately we booked a tour of Matera through a different company who delivered a great tour

Slurry broken english tour guide are terrible
I was charged 60 dollars per person for a tour for my son and I. The company added two more person to the tour that was dishonest. The lady guide broken and slurry english with Italian accent that I could not understand. In the first five minutes, I decided that three hours of broken english was going yo be a torture. This a recurring issue, in one review here, Francesco is mentioned as the tour guide and the reviewer that there are times that the reviewer cannot understand his english.

      Beautiful and informative walk
Our evening walk was cancelled so a guide offered to take us the next morning. The park was great and our guide shared a lot of interesting information throughout the walk. We saw some caves, got up close with a herd of cows, and came to a beautiful view of Matera. Very worthwhile and informative tour! Be warned that you will walk about 3 miles and there are mosquitos in warmer months, so bring bug spray!

      Bad experience
We were told that our guide Barbara spoke English. Her English was very poor and we had great difficulty understanding her. Others felt the same way too.

      Best way to see Matera!
If you want to see Matera with a walking tour, Altieri Viaggi is the way to go. Our guide Antonio Pizziulli was wonderful. If you need an English translation, be sure to specify up front. Only 2 in our family of 5 are fluent Italian so I spent a lot of the time translating. The tour took us to some of the famous sites in the Sasso Caveoso including the rupestrian chuch of S. Maria Idris and an actual cave dwelling of a family who lived there until the 1950's. We also stopped at a shop that makes and sells authentic Matera crafts - see my separate review of Bottega Daddiego. I would not have found this hidden gem were it not for the tour. The shopkeeper gave us of very informative presentation of the typical local traditions and no pressure to buy, Antonio was very well versed in the history and culture of this unique city. The tour concludes at the tour offices of Altieri Viaggi with a tasting of authentic Lucana/Matera delicacies such as olive oils, pepperoni strucco and various spreads and wines - there is absolutely no pressure to purchase - a welcome change!

A tour to appreciate the importance of Matera
We had an English speaking tour with a local Italian guide. Although we have been to Matera a few times before we never had a guided tour. I would highly recommend this tour to learn about the history and why Matera is so important. We appreciate this area so much more now after having a guided tour. Also, admission to some of the sights is included in the price of the tour.

      Excellent
We had Vito as our tour guide and he was very very good. Got a great history lesson from him (think he mentioned he was studying history) and a great tour of the town and the ancient history behind it. Definitely recommend

Our tour was due to start at 5pm and there were only the two of us in the party. However, our guide was 17 minutes late arriving and was accompanied by her 10-yr old nephew who was not at all interested in the tour. Her English was difficult to follow so much so that much detail was lost in translation and we were unable to fully understand her answers to our questions. The tasting at the end of the tour had to be negotiated with the gentleman running the premises as the staff had finished for the day. In comparison with other guided walks taking place in Matera that we passed we thought ours was very poor and relatively expensive. For all the reasons above we could not recommend it to other travellers.

This tour was very disappointing. We could have learnt and seen more in the 2 hours with this guide who gave an incoherent and at times irrelevant commentary. It was made worse and even comical as she had a truculent teenager who proceeded to stamp and kick rocks in protest as she was talking.

Recommendation this tour if you visit the city for the first time, to get a fresco of the history and traditions of the "Sassi" and start orienting yourself in this beautiful site. Antonio, the Guide, very knowledgeable and friendly, also painter of beautiful views of Matera, accompanied us to discover a cave church, a cave house and a historic craft shop where you can also buy beautiful souvenirs. At the end of the visit also an excellent tasting!

Matera told by our Guide Antonio leaves us richer in knowledge. It made us live the past , the present and the future of this charming and unique city . He proposed further tours in order to get to know the other beauties of this place. Thank you for recommending the sunset sightseeing tour that enriches the landscape charm.
