Experience what life was like ‘behind the Iron Curtain’ during this 3-hour guided walking tour of East Berlin’s onetime Soviet sector. Join a group of no more than nine guests as you get a first-hand look at life in Communist East Germany, learning about the regime’s notorious Stasi secret police, daring escape attempts, and exploring sites like embassies of the major Cold War powers, plus much more.
What to Expect
Meet your guide in the afternoon in front of the Starbucks at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate. You’ll proceed with your guide and small group into the former East German sector of Berlin, learning about daily life and key events during this critical Cold War period.

Follow the path of the iconic Berlin Wall which once split the now-reunited German capital in half, learning about the people, places and secrets that fueled the battle between East and West during the period following World War II. Over the course of your visit, you’ll get a look at key East Berlin sites from the Soviet period including the one-time embassies of the major Cold War powers, key Berlin Wall crossing spots like the “Palace of Tears,” and the “Death Strip” that once separated the two divided cities.

As you explore, your guide will also share stories about the key events and moments of Cold War Berlin. You’ll learn about the Stasi, East Germany’s secret police, hear about dramatic escape stories, and discover the meaning behind the concept of “ostalgie” in modern-day Berlin. Your visit will end around 6pm at either the East Side Gallery or on Bernauer Strasse. For a more detailed run-down of key trip highlights, please review the itinerary details below.

Don't Miss This Tour with Georgia

English-speaking walking tour with Georgia was terrific! She is friendly, knowledgeable, humorous--three hours flew by. Highly recommend this trip, not because it's free, but because it's extremely worthwhile. Georgia certainly knows her German history.

We did the free walking tour. Guide was great and not only showed us all the highlights but made some great(Aussie, Lucy) recommendations for food and other things to do while here.
