Marseille has undergone a modern makeover since being crowned European Capital of Culture back in 2013, but the Mediterranean port town also boasts a fascinating history. This 2.5-hour walking tour includes highlights such as the Old Port, the atmospheric district of Le Panier, Fort Saint Jean, and the Mucem museum.
What to Expect
Meet your guide at the Old Port (Vieux Port) in central Marseille, and set out on a walking tour of the city’s historic heart. Follow your guide past the medieval monuments and historic buildings of Le Panier, the city’s oldest neighborhood, as you hear stories of Marseille through the centuries. Learn about the city’s Greek and Roman roots, the Renaissance era, and the years of the Enlightenment and the French Revolution.

Along the way, admire the 17th-century Fort St Jean that guards the Old Port and the modern façade of the neighboring MUCEM; see striking architecture such as the Cathédrale de la Major and Hotel Dieu; and learn more about the city’s most memorable monuments as you climb the Montée des Accoules and stroll around Place des Moulins.

After two and a half hours exploring the city’s historic center, your tour ends back at the Old Port.
