Fat Tire Gave Us A Wonderful Day at Versailles
Aug 2021 • Family
On a recommendation, we took the Fat Tire all day tour of Versailles. Rory, our Irish-born guide, was outstanding. He blended history, affability, bike sense, safety, and his feel for the group (made up of bike riders of all abilities and ages) to provide a wonderful day with memories that we'll take homeand share. He set an easy pace and made certain that all stayed with the group. Fat Tire Nike has a few on Rory, and he made our day!

What did we get for the price? Just transport and a bike. Minimal historical knowledge. Just rent separately and save €.
Aug 2021 • Couples
We have been in Paris for 10 days, did 6 tours of all types: from free tours to private paid tours, but this one was the worst of all. It was so bad. We feel like we completely wasted our day. It was our worst decision to book with this company for their Versailles bike tour.

Some specific comments:
- Met guide at 8:30 AM, no piece of history of the castle before 1 PM.
- Guide is not a registered guide, thus not allowed to give information around buildings, but also NOT knowledgeable at all. Very flaky on history, checks info on his phone the same way we could do it, off on dates and names…
- lots of irrelevant small talk and his personal views opinions and comment just criticizing monarchy… not like relating the “officials” scandals or critics. Give false facts: like he had no idea of the full background of "let them eat cake" comes from and just make up non accurate story. He also doesn’t do the tour with us. Let us go around alone and no guiding around the petit Trianon, village, all: just says “I’ve seen it many times; just go yourself I’ll wait for you”… but we don't care that he’s seen it many times. That’s what guides do: they do it many times and explain to the guests what they know… he stays under tree or at the entrance, we had to use the Versailles audio guide to learn stuff…

So, what did we actually pay for? Just bike and transport. We thought we were getting a TOUR… we felt we were just babysat all day rather than having a tour.

We would just recommend buying train tickets and renting a bike yourself. Use the app for the info, you’ll be much better off and at least get appropriate information rather than approximate history facts and a one guys’ personal opinion. Even when asking about history facts… he’s not giving much.

To avoid at all costs.

The Best Way to Experience Versailles
Jul 2021
Hands down our favorite day during our time in Paris. Rory was a fantastic and knowledgeable guide. We got to see the grounds before touring the palace and gardens. A full day without a minute wasted. A must do if you're in Paris!!

Best way to visit Versailles
Jul 2021
Versailles is huge and this was a great way to see it. Biking through the gardens and a picnic lunch was a great way to spend a beautifully sunny day. Rory was an excellent guide, with loads of information presented in an engaging and memorable way. Both of my kids took information home from this tour, and that doesn't always happen! Rory was extremely well prepared and organized in coordinating our train to Versailles, giving us recommendations and directions in the market, setting us up for the picnic, coordinating our entries under new covid regulations, making sure we knew where to go, and even the high points of what we should definitely see on our own in the palace (knowing that spending time on every single thing is impossible). There is no way we could have coordinated a trip like this to Versailles on our own, and we would not have learned nearly as much. It was a very enjoyable day and one of the highlights of our trip to Paris.

The gardens around Versailles are huge and biking is a great way to see it. Our guide Rory was informative, helpful, and a wonderful conversationalist. He added so much to the tour. We also enjoyed the large Versailles market where we picked up some wonderful things for our picnic lunch. FYI this is an all day, active experience. I had no trouble falling asleep after this tour!! Be sure to book! This is the best way to see Versailles and all the beautiful gardens.

Fat Tire shows you how to see ALL of Versailles in one day.
Aug 2020
Fat Tire has figured out how to see ALL of Versailles in one day. I've been traveling to Paris since the 50's. Versailles was always a stretch. Did you want to see the back part (Trianons, Hamlet) or the Palace? My wife and I went to Paris during a lull in COVID. I thought since France was open again, now is the time to review. You can review the details of the day on their website. The point of this review is that because of their organization, it can really be done! Biking, picnicking on the grounds, seeing the Trianons (Grand and Little), the Hamlet, the Grotto, and still getting back to see the Palace. Sadie was an excellent host and guide. (Ask her about the secret place.)

Excellent experience
Jul 2020
We loved this experience with Fat Tire Tours! Versailles could be overwhelming; we were very happy to have a guide showing us around and making sure we saw everything without wasting time or getting lost. Sadie, our guide, was wonderful. She was patient, fun, and helpful. Her commentary on the history of Versailles was extremely interesting. It added a lot to our visit. We enjoyed buying our lunch at the market and cycling around the canal. After we visited the Grand and Petite Trianons and the Hamlet, we returned the bikes to the office (very close). Then Sadie took us to the entrance of the chateau (palace) and left us to tour it with an audio guide (we did not see any tour guides in the chateau so this seems to be standard) and stay as long as we wanted. This sounded great but we were slow about it. By the time we finished in the chateau, the gardens were closed (5:30pm). I would have been very disappointed about not seeing any of the vast gardens (I had hoped to see the musical fountain show which might require an additional ticket), except that we had decided to stay for the fireworks show (additional fee), which included lighted fountains and an opportunity to wander in the gardens. If you care about seeing the gardens, plan your time at the end in order to accomplish that, because the gardens and fountains are not part of the bike tour. I don't think you could see as much as we did of Versailles without having a bike. And, the cycling made the day so fun! Plus, the knowledgeable guide explaining it all was invaluable. Highly recommended.

Fantastic way to visit Versailles - highly recommend!
Jul 2019
When you visit Versailles we highly recommend you tour it by bike. We went through Fat Tire and our trip around the town and overall estate was accompanied by excellent food and a wonderful guide. Our family (4 adults) enjoyed this cycling tour. The tour start by cycling to a small market and buying your picnic lunch items. After the market, we cycled to the palace grounds, around the palace gardens and learned the history of Versailles. The cycling part of the tour then ends and the guide escorts you into the palace (skipping the ticket lines!). Our favorite part of the day was the cycling – the weather was good, blue sky, great guide and the grounds are kept in a beautiful manner. The inside of the palace was interesting – but a little croweded – and after we’ve seen so many castles and chateaus it blended in with many others. Highly recommend the bike tour approach! PS The cycling is fairly low intensity with many breaks - one of our group had never ridden a bicycle more than 5 miles before and had a wonderful time.

Beautiful Tour
Nov 2019
Great tour! It was the best way to see the chateau, the grounds, and the city - especially with a teenager. Sunday is farmers-market day in Versailles, so you get to shop in the middle of your tour for fresh meats, cheeses, fruits, and veggies as well as cheap wine for your picnic. Get to see all the sights you want to see plus parts of the town you probably wouldn't get to. Just an overall fun experience!

Great fun
Our tour was great. The guide was early as we were at the meeting place and was clearly identifiable. She was helpful in choosing our picnic lunches and a knowledgeable guide for the grounds. This tour allows to see much more of the grounds than one can see in a typical visit She was personable and energetic the whole trip, even when faced with riders with trouble. Unfortunately, I was one of them as I had a mishap that prevented myself and husband from going into the palace and garden. If we visit Paris again, we'd do this tour once more.
