Overview
Step back in time as you enter through the gates of Clifton Street Cemetery, opened by the Belfast Charitable Society in 1797 which catered to all of the citizens of Belfast. Visit the graves of radicals and reformers from a time when Belfast was the Athens of the North as the final resting places of the industrial giants who help to shape Belfast into a global powerhouse. The highlight of the tour is the McCracken family grave where Mary Ann McCracken, activist, abolitionist and philanthropist was laid to rest at the spectacular age of 96. Prepare for your Tour Tours start at 3pm sharp. As Clifton House is still closed to the public, please meet your guide at the gates of Clifton Street Cemetery on HENRY PLACE 10 minutes before the start of the tour, as the cemetery gates are locked once the tour begins. Tickets must be purchased online in advance. Unfortunately there are no toilet facilities at Clifton Street Cemetery.

    Clifton Street Graveyard
Stop: 60 minutes - Admission included
Clifton Street Cemetery was opened in 1797 by Belfast Charitable Society as the city’s main burial ground. Now managed by Belfast City Council, the graveyard is widely recognised as a historically significant site, with strong links to Clifton House and the society who originally opened it. It comprises 14,000 graves including Ireland’s largest Famine graveyard, some of the city’s wealthiest families, 8,000 poor graves and the graves of many of the leaders United Irishmen. Most significantly however, it is the final resting place of local reformers and activist Mary Ann McCracken, who played such a pivitol role within Clifton House itself. Your tour guide will tell you tales of bodysnatching and the thousands of souls who lie in unmarked graves. Some lived out their final days in the Poor House; others died without friends to bury them and there are those who tragically lost their lives in the 1832 cholera epidemic and the Irish Potato Famine.

I would recommend this tour to anyone either visiting or living in Belfast. The tour guide Noel was very friendly and knowledgeable, several times he was able to answer our questions with detailed facts and stories. I learned more in the short hour than I did in many years
