    Great History
Newcastle Castle is a great step back in time into the great history of Newcastle. Small entyr fee, but it's worth it. Also offers great views of the city.

    Castle
The castle is near the church and no doubt it’s old. It’s smaller and most all the surrounding fortifications are small. I’ve been to a decent number of European castles and this one doesn’t have anything that jumps out to make it special.

Moderate expectations - expensive for what it is
Honestly a bit disappointing as there is not a whole lot to see. Do not come with expectations of a large castle, this is more of a square fort across a few different levels, and a small exhibition near the gate and ticket office. Only takes about 30-45 mins, and so the ticket price feels a bit steep for what it is. The best thing about the visit is definitely the 360 degree views of the city from the top of the fort.

A fascinating walking tour to suit everyone
Thomas was such an informative guide, who brought medieval Newcastle to life in the walking tour, and patiently answered all my questions. Highly recommended.

    Highly recommended
Thomas was a wonderful, knowledgeable guide. Our tour actually lasted over 2 hours and we enjoyed every minute of it. History came alive when learning about medieval life with Thomas verbally painting a picture of it.

    Great and instructive visit.
I'm a local, but haven't visited the Castle since my childhood. I can honestly say I found the experience as exciting as I did as a child and enjoyed the views from the castle much more. This was a great experience with much to see and much to learn from the excellent signage provided. There were a few visitors besides ourselves, but not too many that it had any effect on our enjoyment of the experience. Be warned, there are lots of steps which need to be climbed so as to enjoy Castle Keep to the full. Great experience and a perfectly reasonable price for tickets relative to today's prices. I'm tempted to revisit soon. Kids of all ages would love this.

Great walking tour, led by an expert.
First class walking tour with an excellent guide, George. Despite us both being Newcastle residents, we learnt something about the city and its medieval history at every stop along the way. My only tiny comment is that we spent a very long time at the start, setting the scene and I would reduce this “intro” to a few minutes at most. A lot of people think that Newcastle’s ancient history starts and finishes with the Romans. This superb tour proved that belief could not be further from the truth!

    Castle Downtown
We did some walking around this very old castle that is not in great condition. It dominates the old center and there are tours available. Close to the cathedral.

    Dreadful customer service
I am currently in Newcastle on my wedding anniversary with my husband. We stayed overnight in a lovely hotel and we were excited to be going to visit the castle. We got there and stood in the queue for tickets for 10 mins, there was an English girl serving, and an American girl doing safety briefing. I got to the front of the queue and the American girl flipped the queue over to the other side. I explained I've already queued for 10 mins.. To be told I would have to then join the END of other queue!!!. I couldn't believe this !?! I was at the front the whole time then expected to go to the back of the queue. I was absolutely disgusted by her nonchalant attitude that me and my husband left a we were not going to be queuing again. Absolutely disgusting customer service. We left extremely angry.

    Newcastle castle accessibility
On arriving found that although they have a lift, it is only in the gatehouse, not the castle itself. From their website: "Visitors can explore all four floors of this Scheduled Ancient Monument!" When we returned I scrolled down & checked Accessibility, says some upper floors can't be reached. Actually we were advised that my husband needed to walk 128 steps to get up into the Castle. The shop has a loo. As price was £12.50 each we decided not worth paying to look at gatehouse only, felt quite gutted! Staff nice, obviously you can't expect an ancient monument to have holes wacked into it to allow for a lift in the castle too, just would be good if they had made it more obvious on their website. We walked around outside, took photos, quite amazing.

    Great comprehensive tour!
We took this walking tour in the morning (1030) which I highly recommend. The guide was very knowledgeable and passionate about the topic. Many very interesting facts a stories of Newcastle's history were shared. At the end of the tour you get a ticket for the actual castle to explore on our own schedule. We elected to grab lunch then go back to enter making this tour economical and many hours (if you choose) of history. We highly recommend.

Fantastic walking tour - brought history to life!
This walking tour was an absolutely key part of our time in Newcastle! The guide was amazing — engaging, knowledgeable, generous with his time and a delightful story teller. We learned so much!! I strongly suggest that the city of Newcastle hire him to improve the overall infrastructure for tourists in Newcastle!! We were fascinated by the remarkable history of this ancient city, but we felt like the public information and infrastructure did not do justice to this rich heritage.

Fabulous walking tour of historical Newcastle!
Great walking tour. Our guide was Daniel who took us through a great walk through Newcastle and down to the quayside, taking in medieval sights as we went. Very interesting and entertaining!

I visited the castle with my 10 year old and we loved it. Although the keep was rather small, you can explore just about every room, staircase and corridor. There were hardly any other visitors at the time we were there, so it was easy to move around and take time to read the historical summaries. The views from the top of the keep were great. Definitely worth the price of admission.

Although just the keep and black gate remain it’s well worth visiting. Best to do at the start of a trip as it gives a great overview of the history of the city and a literal view of how the city and railway have grown around and into the earlier castle complex. The staff were very helpful and friendly (but what else would you expect around here).

There was no high demand at all - no need to prebook at all - the busy queue idea is a complete myth. It’s a tourist trap - much better to go and see the “castle” remnants from outside before deciding if you want to waste £10 on going inside. Very underwhelming.

I've long loved the Newcastle Castle and Black Gate, but I hadn't really had a chance to check it out since the renovations. The timed entry slots mean it never gets busy, so you've got time to soak up the history and explore the castle at a good pace. Stunning views from the castle roof, and I particularly enjoyed the focus on the people of the local community in the Black Gate. Highly recommended!

Lovely Castle! The castle was very interesting, the tickets were appropriately priced and the staff were very friendly and helpful, we had ordered a timed ticket in advance and found that we wished to visit a little earlier. This wasn’t a problem. Great views from the top of the castle!

Disappointing. Looked good from the outside but inside wasn't up to much. A lot closed due to a function but prices the same. Asked about an audio guide as this was advertised but told it was in addition to the admission price which was expensive enough as it was...static displays not very good, a lot of broken pottery etc. The view from the top was good although H&S did not seem a priority? Staff didn't seem bothered. Altogether wish I'd taken the city bus ride....

This Famous Castle set in the heart of the City made Newcastle what it is today, a stone throw from the River Tyne to the hustle and bustle of the shops and restaurants.

As I did book online saves the hassle, just before you enter the castle make sure to visit the castle keep this was used by King Henry III between 1247 and 1250 if you would like to read more just search online fascinating.

Then I made it up the stairs in to the castle, there are many pieces of memorabilia on how the castle was used and how it become part of Newcastle as we know it today, but the bit I was most looking forward to in my visit was the magnificent views It beholds from the top, as my pictures put in to content the views over the Tyne from the Millennium Bridge up to the Tyne Bridge the Swing Bridge to the High Level Bridge I can’t put in to words just make sure you go in like I did with the sun out priceless.

Then before you know it time had beaten me and it was time to leave, so in summary this Castle is a must to do, it’s on to the New but don’t forget the Old

Newcastle Castle was a pleasant surprise.

Full of history, amazing structure which has been built, destroyed and rebuilt over hundreds of years.

Inside the castle the stairs lead to many areas, the great hall is huge and made me feel tiny.

View of Newcastle from the turret were amazing.

Our 20 yr old daughter loved exploring the Castle.

A hidden gem with magnificent views across the River Tyne.
I have lived in the North East for many years without visiting. Make sure you do.
Very interesting history. I visited with the historical fiction author SJ Martin who is currently writing about the building of the castle which made it even more interesting.
Recommended.
