Steam Trains, Whitby, and the North York Moors Full-Day Tour from York
See North Yorkshire’s countryside and coast on a day trip from York. Giving a great overview of the northern county’s delights, the day trip takes you to more sites than you’d manage to see alone. Explore market towns such as Helmsley, the North York Moors National Park, Whitby, and filming locations in Goathland — it’s a treat for Heartbeat and Harry Potter fans alike. Finally, finish with a steam train ride across the moors.
What to Expect
Leave York and travel into the north Yorkshire countryside to the pretty market town of Helmsley. Stretch your legs on a walk through the center, then continue high into the hills, past the limestone village of Hutton-le-Hole. You’ll then arrive in the North York Moors National Park for a stroll across its heather-filled moorland, learning about Yorkshire’s mining and farming heritage.

Venture onward to coastal Whitby where you’ll have free time to explore the harbor, or perhaps treat yourself to an English seaside classic of fish and chips.

Later, you’ll travel to Goathland, aka Aidensfield in the UK Heartbeat series, to see filming locations aplenty. Harry Potter fans are also in for a treat, as you’ll visit the railway site that doubled as Hogsmeade Station in the films.

Finish on a high note, traveling via steam train across the moors to Pickering. From here, it’s back on the coach to York.

A Great Day Out from York

The tour began with torrential rains, thunder and lightening, but this ended by the time we reached the ruins of Blyland Abbey and then the lovely market town of Helmsley. The sun came out and the rest of the day was glorious with the tour...More

Well planned, extremely knowledgeable

Unfortunately I didn't catch the name of our guide but he knew so much! He and his driver were friendly and professional and the tour ran without any glitches. We were warned that we may not see the steam train but then they went above...More
