What to expect
See Banff National Park from a different perspective — 6 or 7 feet up from the back of a friendly horse. Meet your guide, get outfitted with your horse, and receive a safety briefing. Then head out through the park on horseback on a 3-hour guided tour. On the 3-hour Bow Valley Loop Ride you'll ride along the Bow River and through the Cave and Basin area – the birthplace of Banff National Park, where you will find bubbling sulphur waters and remarkable rock caverns. Head along the Sundance Canyon Trail and keep an eye out for beaver, elk, coyotes and occasionally, bears before climbing up Sulphur Mountain to the Windy Knoll viewpoint, where sweeping views of the Bow Valley await. This is definitely a trip you’ll want to bring your camera for.

I did the 3hr ride here on 27th August. I'm an experienced rider(18 years riding English)- this ride is at a walk only pace which was fine by me as I was busy taking in the scenery!

My horse was called Jessie- he was steady and knew his job well.

The staff were all friendly and helpful. My guide was Rosie- she was very upbeat and personable, and chatted to us lots about the local area/wildlife etc.

Definitely recommend for anyone visiting Banff.

Aug 2019
We did the 3 Hour Bow Valley Loop. It was just lovely. The horses were calm and well-trained. I was surprised at how comfortable it was. Having only experienced English riding before, I was expecting to be a little sore after 3 hours, but western style is totally different. No soreness at all. My completely inexperienced husband also had no trouble with it.

The scenery was amazing, and this was a perfect way to see it. Our guide was full of little stories about the area, the history, the local wildlife. There were some moments where we also rode in silence just to take in the sights.

This was possibly my favourite experience of my entire 2 week holiday in Canada! :)

Oh... but don't forget mosquito repellent!

Incredible experience
Sep 2019
I've never ridden before, and was a bit nervous about going out for 3 hours, but the staff were really lovely - they took their time finding the best horse for me (Spud - I miss him!), and when we were out on the trail they checked on us frequently to make sure we were all okay.
Our guide was super knowledgeable, sharing lots of stories about the area, and helping us identify flora and fauna along the way.

I'd assumed we'd be just trotting along on the flat, but we climbed up and down part of the mountain, which was amazing on the very surefooted horses.

Top tip: when you start riding you'll be told that you need to be in control of the horse, and not let them stop to eat whenever they want. Listen to the guide when they tell you that - several people in the group tried asking their horses nicely not to do things, and spent half the time waiting for their horses as they munched at the side of the road!

Overall: a fantastic trip, worth every penny!

Western Riding

We did the 3 hour Bow Valley Trail. I have seen some reviews on here that say the horses are not treated that well, but I saw no evidence of this. The horses seemed well looked after and well behaved. We were told on the ride the stable only use geldings as they are more placid for beginner and novice riders, which you can be on this ride. There is no need to be able to ride at all, although some of the more “off road” parts of the trail might have been a bit scary to someone who had never been on a horse, my partner’s horse did have a bit of a slip at one point. There were great lumps of mud as some other reviewers have mentioned but we were told it had been raining heavily and it wasn’t an issue. Both me and my partner enjoyed the ride and were lucky to be just behind the guide, Kayla, who kept us informed about points of interest and wildlife (we unfortunately only saw squirrels). There were only 6 riders on our trail and if you are at the back you might not be able to hear the guide. We both thought the western style of riding seemed easier than the British style, but we only rode at a walking pace, which is apparently all you are allowed to do in the national parks.

The whole tour was just great. You get everything you need and get help with getting on the horse, followed by easy constructions. On the ride we had some great views and our guide explained us a lot about the area. I would always do it again.

Bow River Loop Trek
Aug 2019
The first thing we booked when we knew we were going to Canada was this, what a great choice, as we own our own horses and ride in the UK, this was a must do. We had originally booked a Sulphur Mountain Ride but this had to be changed due to Parks Canada doing some trail work, this was all handled via email very well and we were re-booked to the Bow River ride without any fuss.
It was excellent, check in was fine, polite and quick, not long before we were mounted and ready to leave, my horse was called Wilson and all the staff were happy to see him back (he had been away for a while), it showed how much they care about the horses. We had a lovely guide who was very informative, always checking we were OK, giving out information about the surroundings, at one point we even saw a Coyote!, and the pack of mules taking the camping gear out to the campaign rides.
Overall we had an excellent time, horses were lovely, staff were all excellent, scenery fantastic, I would recommend this to anyone, you do not need to be expert rider either, as it was only at walking pace and hats are provided
Thanks to all the staff, and of course Wilson for looking after me and my family, we had an excellent 3 hours out with the horses in this wonderful country.

Fantastic adventure!
It was absolutely fantastic. One of the best experiences in Banff. We booked three hours horse backride Bow river loop. We truly didn't have any experience riding and yet they've made our experience easy and comfortable. We rode through wild parts of forest and experienced the smell and the feeling of being deep in the woods. Going by the river expose amazing picturesque views. We climbed the Needle mountain the top with breathing views of the whole valley. The horses knew the path and were absolutely wonderful. Our guide was very nice and share many interesting facts about the area.

Great way of viewing banff
Jul 2019 • Couples
Magnificiant view and a relaxing way to enjoy the beautiful views. Good to manage the expectation that the horses are trained to ride like a train. You are not allowed to do anything else even slow down to take a photo. This was you get to slowing move along to enjoy the view.

My only negative comments was that the rider provided a comment on the restaurant above the gondola which seems unprofessional

Cowboy Cookout
We had a great afternoon on the 3 hour 'Cowboy Cookout'. It is great for beginners or inexperienced riders as the horses follow each other in a line... but even so my horse knew I was abit unsure so tried a few 'unauthorised moves' like going too close to/through the bushes and knocking my knees into a tree, ha ha! He (Pistol) was soon brought back in to line by the guide, Mark, who was excellent (thank you Mark!).
For the Cowboy Cookout trip you have a lovely 1 hour ride along the Bow River, which is beautiful, ending up at the Cookout site. The Cookout itself was better than expected - the steak was cooked to perfection and the Cowboy beans were delicious. The ride back to the stables takes you on a different route, where the guides show you points of interest and funny stories. All in all it was an excellent way to spend the evening. Well done Banff Trail Riders, especially Mark.
Thanks again for the photos you took of us - they are much better than the shaky ones I took en route, ha ha.

Horse ride
Jul 2019 • Family
The ride was okay. It had rained a lot so the horses had to tromp through mud a foot deep. We didn’t get the full experience because we couldn’t ride a normal route so it was a lot of walking by a concrete trail. A horse our teenage son was on slipped in the mud and began to limp so we had to get a different horse for him. Then the saddle on our other sons horse was not tight enough and slipped to the side and he had to jump off. Our trailperson was great at working through these things, none of which was her fault. This would be good for young kids or people that aren’t around horses and like just a slow walk.

Thank you for your review and positive comments regarding our staff. Unfortunately earlier this summer we did have issues with the amount of rain we received and trail conditions. We rely on Parks Canada to maintain the trails and we had to wait until we finally received summer temperatures. Thankfully this has all been resolved with the great weather we are now experiencing.
