What to expect
After being picked up from your Banff accommodation, your guide takes you to Johnson's Canyon for the icewalk and gets you suited up with ice cleats and a hiking pole. During your hike, walk about 3.4 miles (5.5 kilometers) and the elevation gain is 443 feet (135 meters). Learn about the history and geology of the area, as you keep a lookout for wildlife, such as wolves, moose, elk, and coyotes. See the upper and lower waterfalls trapped in ice. Afterward, enjoy a snack and a cup of hot chocolate to warm up before getting dropped off back at the original pickup place in Banff.

Breathtaking
I did this hike on the first week of April, with Jeff. What made the ice walk amazing was that Jeff kept it lively in addition to the beautiful scenery! I loved that it wasn’t crowded. For this reason alone, this tour is so worth it!

Great View
Mar 2021 • Family
Anick was our guide; she was funny and gave us a brief history of the canyon and lots of interesting facts. She was great! Highly recommend this hike, but, when it says moderate level of fitness, they mean it. Walking in ice cleats in slushy snow is a lot like walking in sand. It’s a workout and there are many ups and downs on the trail. The canyon is beautiful and the sights are magnificent.

We had a great time doing the Johnston Canyon afternoon hike today with Jeff as our tour guide . He was very knowledgeable and so patient and passionate about our surroundings. Will highly recommend this tour to my family and friends. Felt very safe with protocols in place with covid 19 .

Great hike!
We travelled March 2021. Since the Banff Parkway is closed, we thought we’d try Banff Tours and Annick, our guide did not disappoint! On time pick up and friendly tour guiding for the drive. The hike was easy enough with spikes that were provided. We had a good group, no one was holding up the hike because they were out of shape so it was perfect. It was so neat to see the waterfalls all frozen. Round trip about 6.4km.

Fabulous day!
Mar 2021
Our tour was great! We took the Johnston Canyon ice walk tour and had a great day. Our tour guide (Todd, I believe) was very informative and did a wonderful job. All the COVID protocols were followed, and we felt very safe at all times. We hiked up to the Upper Falls where we had some hot chocolate and maple cookies. The weather was amazing and the canyon was beautiful. We've been to Johnston Canyon many times but it was great to see it in winter. And because the general public isn't allowed in at this time, taking a tour was a great way to see it and avoid the crazy crowds that normally inhabit it (pre-COVID). I highly recommend this company and this tour.
