What to expect
This Banff wildlife safari is the perfect opportunity to spot the park’s amazing creatures during their most active evening period, all set against the beautiful landscape of the Canadian Rockies. After an early evening pickup in Banff, you’ll head into the park with your guide. As the tour passes through the park’s diverse mountain landscapes, keep your eyes peeled for sightings of animals such as sheep, elk, deer and bears as they begin their evening activity. Your guide will share additional details about these amazing creatures and their unique habitat, along with some of the challenges of trying to protect them and a stop will be made at an interactive touch table to view rare animal props and artifacts. At the end of the two hours, you’ll be dropped back in downtown Banff, arriving with a newfound appreciation and understanding of the incredible wildlife that calls this area home. Please note: this tour is seasonal and only operates from April through October.

Fun Experience
Jun 2021
Very enjoyable experience. We got to see some deer, elk and a mama bear with her cubs. Our tour guide, Ronnie, was absolutely fantastic and went out of her way to make this a memorable ride.

Great info!
We unfortunately did not see much wildlife but our guide”Rob” or “Rod” (sorry don’t remember) was so knowledgeable. We learned a lot about Banff National Park, which made us love the place even more! We learned a lot of cool facts about the animals also. I think the price is a bit steep and they should rename the tour to site seeing. But otherwise we enjoyed it.

Banff Safari loved every minute of this tour.
Jul 2020 • Family
My daughter and I went on the wildlife Safari it was a great experience. Our guide took us to spots that we would most likely never have thought to go to see the wildlife. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the area, wildlife and history of the park. We would definitely do this tour again and also other tours they have available. Well worth taking this tour.

Memorable experience!
Oct 2019 • Couples
We were recently at Banff National Park for 4 days and decided to do this on our last evening there, as the scenery was amazing but we hadn’t yet seen much wildlife.
Bears are one thing that we were hoping to see and did not, as it was s little late in the year. We did see three large groups of elk and were lucky to see some butting heads.
On the way back to our cars we found out that it was the next to last day of tours for the year. We had great weather but it snowed about 10 inches that night and the next day, so it all worked out great. Highly recommended!

Wonderful wildlife safari
Sep 2019 • Friends
We decided to do the the evening wildlife safari while staying in Banff for a family trip. I was a little skeptical on going because every other tour I had been on during my trip was lackluster. SO glad I decided to go on this one though! We were able to see a bunch of wildlife which included about 500 elk (a little exaggerated but still a lot), mountain sheep, coyote, and of course birds. Our guide Kelsey was awesome too and gave us a lot of information during our trip. We even got a little souvenir to take home with us at the end!

Fun times in Banff
Sep 2019 • Friends
We had an absolutely incredible time on this excursion. We saw probably 40-50 elk while touring around the Banff area. Our awesome tour guide Gina is very informative, passionate and friendly. We had lots of opportunities to ask questions, Gina created a really fun environment of complete strangers that could all get excited over what we saw.

I’d highly recommend this excursion and if your guide is Gina sit near the front if you have questions but if you’re like me you should sit at the very back and yell your questions (it’s all good) but you can capture pretty amazing shots out the back of the bus.

Side note - we visited in the last week of September during the Elk mating season so we were fortunate enough to watch two male elk battle it out for the females.

And the 4/5 - honesty I wish we saw bears. Gina shared that she might see them for 7-8 days in a row but then not see them for weeks... I guess I’ll have to Banff again!

You can do it on your own
If we hadn't have an a amazing tour in jasper a week before this tour it would probably have been better. The guide seemed more interested in telling stories about when they'd seen animals to actually finding any.
We returned to the golf course on our own the following evening and saw more wildlife as we were able to move further in.

Maybe better in summer months?
This was a disappointing experience. The pickup instructions were unclear and we had problems finding the pickup spot, which in hindsight was remote given the locations of the other travelers. We had to call Support to get everything sorted out. To their credit, the support experience was excellent.

I recognize it is impossible to predict the whereabouts of wildlife. Still, we only saw elk and one squirrel on this 2 hour tour. The tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly but forgot the air conditioning for much of the tour, converting the passenger area into a steam room. When it was turned on it was minimally effective. All in all, it was an uncomfortable experience and not what we had imagined at booking.

I think this could be a really fun experience during the summer months when there is more wildlife diversity in the valley. I might suggest looking at other activities during cooler months, however.

Hello, Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback on the Evening Wildlife Safari. We attempted to look up your booking to review the pickup instructions, but we weren't able to match this up from your username alone. This is detailed in the confirmation email but it sounds like you may have booked through a third party or wholesaler and may not have received the full tour information. We're thrilled to hear that our reservations team was able to assist you to resolve this. Fall is an exciting time to see elk in Banff, as it's during the rutting (breeding) season. We're often lucky enough to see them rounding up their harems of cow elk, fighting other male elk, and even sometimes to hear the unique 'bugle' which is simply incredible (and hard to believe that this is the noise an elk makes!). While we do go to the areas where we've seen animals lately they do move about on their own and may not be where we have seen them the previous evening or even earlier that same day. For this reason we don't guarantee wildlife sightings, but we have an amazing full-day tour to see Boo the grizzly bear at a grizzly bear refuge for any guests that would like to be sure of seeing a bear. We've passed on your feedback regarding the lack of air conditioning during part of the tour, and the Guiding Manager has made this a couching note for all our guides to check in with their guests a few different times throughout the tour as we want all guests to be comfortable on our tours. We hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in Banff.

Wildlife can be difficult
Sep 2019 • Solo
I know that wildlife can be difficult and not willing to be found at times. A couple of big elk and a very cute squirrel were the best views for the evening. Did see a white tail deer in the scrub as well.
I found the talk outside the bus before we started to go rather chilly.

Not worth it
Like similar reviews we found this to be a waste of money. We spent the first 30 minutes finding out where everyone else was from and why they where visiting Banff. This was done while stationary. Then a drive on the main road to hear about conservation followed by a short drive to the golf course to see some wildlife.
We saw more driving ourselves and expected a bit more than the driver watching the road and scouring the bushes as the sun was going down. Staff where nice but not worth the money for this excursion.

Hi John, I am sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your tour with us. We do aim to find out who we have on our trips, as our goal is to make our experiences more personal. However 30 minutes of time to do this, does seem a little excessive. One of our main focuses on our evening wildlife tour, is to have our guests learn about why Banff National Park is special. We focus our commentary on learning about the specific animals we have in the park as well as how the national park management strategies have evolved since it is conception in 1885. Learning about conservation efforts is part of that. It is true you can visit the locations we visit in your own vehicle. We aim to go to locations where we have had success in spotting wildlife, the golf course for Elk in September is popular viewing location. At the end of each summer, we look at all our tours and see what we can do to enhance our programs. So do know your thoughts above will be considered. I do hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in Banff. Best Regards, Rose Maunder Senior Manger of Guiding Operations
