A memorable and highly recommended hike in the Rockies.
Sep 2019
We did this hike to the Larch Valley with our guide Sam at the end of the late September snowfall. We had a full group of 12, with ages ranging from 20s to 60s. As one of the oldest with very average fitness, I was a bit breathless at times, but was fine once we got to the top of the switchbacks. The golden larches in the Larch Valley and views of the mountains and Moraine Lake were absolutely stunning, even though we couldn’t see the tops of the mountains with low cloud. The packed lunch was delicious and generous. Wished we’d taken up Sam’s offer of cleats for our boots and walking poles though, as coming back down the trail was icy and slow-going, with the snow packed down by many feet and rather slippery. However, Sam very kindly rushed down and back up again with cleats and poles, which was very much appreciated. A memorable and highly recommended day in the Rockies.

Wonderful experience at Moraine Lake!
Sep 2019
I did the guided hike for Larch Valley the second week of September and I was very happy with my choice! I was traveling solo, and had heard about the bear restrictions around the Moraine Lake area for hiking. This was the primary reason I chose to do a guided hike. The trail itself was pretty straightforward and well maintained, and also by noon the trail was pretty populated. However, just for the mere fact that parking at Moraine Lake is so impossible - this made the tour worth it. Everything was flawless from start to finish. I was not staying in Banff, so my meeting place was in the parking lot behind Mount Royal. Parking was easy at this time in the morning, and two couples were already waiting for the van when I arrived. The weather forecast wasn't great - cloudy in the AM and rain in the PM, but it really only rained a short time on our way back down. Even with the clouds - it was still great. They had passed out ponchos before we started out too. Hugh was our guide, and he did a good job of giving information and making everyone feel comfortable. The pace was great throughout the whole hike - I never felt like I was being rushed or slowed down. I would consider myself a moderately fit 31 year old, but I am not as conditioned to elevation gains. We had a full group - so there was 12 of us total. Group ages ranged from probably late 20s to 60s, so it was diverse but we all kept a nice pace. I was happy to find I was not the only solo traveler in the group as there were two others who signed up alone. I would recommend this guided hike for other solo travelers who are unfamiliar with the area. Doing this group gave me the opportunity to meet some new people, and have any questions I had about Banff answered! I ran into 3 people from the group at other times throughout my trip and it was nice to see familiar faces. It's also great for anyone nervous about the bear restrictions, parking or hiking in general. The hike itself was beautiful - a must do for visiting Banff. Views of the mountains and of Moraine Lake as we headed up were breathtaking. Also, the Larch trees were starting to turn their beautiful shade of yellow and I found that very pleasing. After we made it to Minestimma Lakes, we headed back down to find a lunch spot. The packed lunch was satisfying after the 2 hrs of uphill hiking! After lunch, Hugh was not as concerned about the group staying as tightly together, so we all headed down at our own pace - but still staying pretty close together. Once we got back to Moraine Lake, we had some free time to explore the area. I was happy to have this time down at the lake because its so beautiful! I did the short rockpile trail which is just steps up to a point, which gives the best viewpoint of the lake. There is also a gift store and cafe. We got to Moraine Lake around 9 AM I believe, and left at 3, so I felt like it was a nice, complete day at the Moraine Lake area. Overall, for the price I was very satisfied with the experience! You figure you get the parks admission covered, shuttle expenses from Lake Louise (since its pretty impossible to get a spot at the Moraine Lake parking lot), they also have walking sticks available for anyone who likes them, a sense of safety being with an experience guide, plus an expert available at all times for any questions you may have - it is well worth it! If you're staying in Banff- they'll pick up and drop off wherever you are staying also! Booking was easy, and I called twice prior to ask questions and confirm and the person on the line was very kind and helpful. I also very much enjoyed the other members in the group! It was fun to meet people from other areas of the US, London and New Zealand!

Wouldn't do it any other way
Sep 2019
I booked 4 different hikes during my 1 week stay in Banff. Having guided hikes not only provided the needed safety with the knowledge and training of the guide, it provided the safety in numbers, an educational experience regarding the geological formations, and wildlife. My guides were Heidi, Becca, Nick and Andrew. They each provided there own twist on what we were seeing, so I did not feel like I was being fed the same information with each hike. It was ideal for me, traveling alone, but was also attended by many couples.

Two great hikes!
Aug 2019
I did two tours with Discover Banff so will split them up here:

Lake Louise & the Plain of Six Glaciers (with Andrew). I loved this hike! Beautiful views and it was quite strenuous at times, which I liked. Andrew was a terrific guide, very knowledgeable and gave us lots of commentary. He also gave us plenty of breaks for water and adding/removing layers of clothing.

Valley of Ten Peaks & Moraine Lake (with Sam). I loved this hike too! More stunning views and again, pretty strenuous (these are both marked "moderate"). Sam was happy to get out his guidebook to help people in our group identify plants & mushrooms.

Lunches were good too. Would love to do another Discover Banff hike!

Nick! What a TREAT it was to have you as our tourguide through Valley of the Ten Peaks and Lake Morraine this past week. My boyfriend and his sister joined an incredibly insightful and scenic guided hike from our tourguide Nick alongside 4 others. Our trip started in a pickup in downtown Banff and continued up to Lake Morraine (which is INCREIDBLY difficult to get there because of parking requirements by the Banff district). We were informed of all the surrounding wildlife and plants before the hike and during and we were able to ask any questions and Nick would answer to the best of his ability - if he knew the answer! He was so kind, thoughtful and considerate of those who weren't experienced hikers (myself included) and made the experience fun and personable. He related to each of us and got to know us on a personal level as well. Even the lunches were great! I have celiac disease and I was given a gluten free salad, apple juice, and apple and brownie and my boyfriend was given a wrap, browines, an apple and apple juice! I would 100% take another Discover Banff tour. I felt safe and was beyond thrilled with my experience! Thank you Nick!

We absolutely loved our hike with Nick to the valley of the ten peaks! The group was great and Nick was very knowledgeable. We learnt lots about the national park and enjoyed hearing Nicks stories about living there. The hike itself was amazing- incredible views and well paced. Would recommend to all.

Excellent, fun hike
Aug 2019 • Solo
I wasn't really sure if the hike would take place at all, the day was already quite wet and drab, and there had been a forecast of thunderstorms. But our guide Kelsey put our minds at ease when she picked us up, saying that we'd turn back well within the tree cover if the weather turned for the worse. She also came prepared, of course, and had warm hats and gloves abd also rain capes for everyone. The hike was pretty spectacular despite the weather, we made it to our destination and even had some sun on the way back. Kelsey set a pace that fit everyone in our group and really made this day a lot of fun. I did a hike she'd recommended the next day and found the pikas she'd promised. :-D all in all, an absolutely wonderful experience.

An enjoyable hike despite poor weather!
Aug 2019 • Couples
We’d booked a hike with Discover Banff Tours through a travel company many weeks ago so had no way of predicting the weather. We’d been travelling in Canada for 3 weeks with some great weather enhancing all our activities. We naturally felt apprehensive on our hike day with forecasts of heavy rain and even lightening. However, under the expert guidance of our guide Kelsey, the day turned out to be really enjoyable. Kelsey had brought extra waterproofs, energy bars, additional warm clothing etc. We hiked the Moraine Lake track stopping half way for our well earned packed lunch. The views of Moraine Lake were breathtaking. We can safely say that Kelsey went above and beyond- even returning to our hotel after the tour to bring a lost neckerchief- thanks Kelsey!
