About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- paullJ5100PW0 contributionsMake sure its not RonWell the driver Ron didn't even arrive for the scheduled pickup that was booked and confirmed by the hotel. After taking pity on us a driver from the same company asked if he could help and told us Ron was down the harbour sitting in his van. He tried to ring him but to no avail so this driver drove us to the hotel......straight past Ron sitting playing on his phone exactly where this driver told us he would be. Well done to our driver for his assistance and a huge thumbs down to Ron who missed out on the handsome tip we gave our driver.Written 20 October 2024

- fsandpp0 contributionsRarotonga too far for not enoughWe stayed at the Rarotonga Beach Resort and Lagoonarium. This place sure needs a makeover. The whole place is dated and it looks as though nothing has been done for years. The water did not flow out of the shower the entire time we were there and the water in the sink in the basin sprayed out over the basin. The wardrobe was half covered by another cupboard that they put the fridge in - very poor design. The place was dirty, one rag stayed in the foyer the entire time we were there. The gardens were unkempt. Mosquitoes nearly eat me alive - despite me using mosquitoe spray. Breakfast consisted of old fruit, mush, stale pastries and undrinkable juice(liquid) in large containers. Staff not interested in guests or listening to issues. Would never go there again.Written 14 June 2024
- D4114DSgeorgev0 contributionsBrilliant Stay - Twice!Avarua Escape is just magic! Delightful hosts. Second visit from Australia in 7 months! There are two, one bedroom, fully equipped units, spacious and extremely clean. Wonderful, clean pool. Washing machine etc free to use. Situated about 500 metre easy walk to main township (shopping) or cafes or Tamarind Restaurant, Trader Jack's, Lazy Trout Cafe, Lucky Rooster cafe (breaky of lunch), central bus stop (every half hour). Close to everything - supermarket, pharmacy, ANZ bank, Western Union Bank, hire cars/scooters. Very safe. If you are a couple or solo this is the place to stay. Just the little touches .. bread, butter, assortment of little jams, coffee, milk on arrival in fridge. Plenty of spare towels. Hosts Jodie and Macca live on the property (with gorgeous cocker spaniel, Dixon). Nothing is ever too much trouble for these wonderful hosts who go out of their way to ensure you are enjoying your holiday/break. Won't stay anywhere else.Written 28 May 2024
- Elisajk0 contributionsAverage experience for the priceI booked my transfers to and from the airport with Cook Islands Tours and was fairly disappointed with the experience for what I paid (over $100 for 2 x return transfers). After landing in Rarotonga, there was about a 45-minute wait in the van prior to departure with no communication from staff around timings - and my hotel was only a 5-minute drive away from the airport (Edgewater). It doesn't seem fair to charge each person the same rate when there are quite variable hotel distances. Most notably, there were not enough seats in the van for the number of people who had booked a transfer and one man was asked to essentially sit on my lap and kindly proceeded to sit on the floor instead. The same seemed to occur for the van next to us so this was not a once-off occurrence - selling more seats than are available seems very unethical to me. The water and lei provided were nice but did not justify the price - by comparison the local bus charges $5pp from the airport to locations all around the island plus a $2 fee for luggage. My return transfer was less drama but the company did not seem to have a record of my booking so it's fortunate I called the day prior to confirm.Written 8 April 2024

- Nima19920 contributionsPapa NgI booked this tour without much thought as I thought it would be great to walk about and learn about Raro from someone first hand. This tour was the best surprise ever, Papa Ng is the village elder most of us '90s have heard about but never had. He has the presence and knowledge of a sensei with the kindness of a grandmother. The rich history of Avarua and how it came to be was explained with such ease. We were told about the modernisation of the buildings and their significance. One of my favourite parts was the personal stories Papa shared with us. He is learning about traditional medical using the flora and fauna of raro, which I hope will be passed onto the younger generations. One of my highlights was the chanting at the Marae, I may not understand the language but the energy and mana that was entrenched in that chant still sits with me today. I would highly recommend this and the crew is so lovely they had prepared light refreshments (tropical fruit) for us. <3Written 11 February 2020
- Karen5511150 contributionsProgressive DinnerThis was a fabulous evening of great food and good company. We booked this tour at our accommodation. We were picked up by bus by Ben who was a terrific host. It was absolutely pouring rain but our group of about 15 people were still treated to wonderful food. Entree, main course and dessert were at three different locations but mainly in the north west area of the island. Drinks were also provided. Each course took place in the homes of local people. Lots of fun. This was one of the highlights of our stay in the Cook Islands.Written 21 December 2019

We wanted the opportunity to learn about the Cook Islands and the local culture, rather than just spend time in a resort and pretend we had experienced what the Cook Islands have to offer.
The progressive dinner, arranged by Cook Island tours, was perfect for our needs.
Our family of four were collected from our resort at about 5.30 pm and taken to join a dozen others at our first location – the home where we were to have the first (starter) course of our meal. The host and his wife were hugely welcoming, entertaining and instructive.
Wine with a garden tour by our host who instructed us on all the local fruit and other trees that he had grown, was followed by amazing starters - tuna steeped in lemon juice to “cook” for several hours served with a local dish containing chopped banana, apricot jam, mild curry powder, lime juice and coconut cream. This was served with wine or home made fruit drink. He, together with a guy who travelled with us for the whole evening, entertained us as we ate with music and song.
Our minibus then took us to the next destination – a lovely house on the hill overlooking the main island school and sports ground. Again, a great welome from the hosts who fed us well and entertined us with local music and song as we ate. The second (main course) here, consisted of a wide choice of local dishes and vegetables with wine and fruit juice.
The minibus again took us on to the final destination – another local home with yet another welcoming hostess who provided a dessert course – big variety of chopped island fruits, ice cream and coffee.
We had music as we were transferred between houses – our driver and guitar player provided entertainment as well as the music entertainment at each home.
This was a hugely entertaining and instructive event and one of the highlights of our visit to Rarotonga.
Thank you everyone.

This was SO MUCH FUN!! I feared it would be one of those scripted fake tours where you might as well be on a Disney ride. Instead, it is an authentic view into the lives of Cook Islanders, who generously and graciously invite you into their homes. If we had not done this, we would have missed out on so much about Rarotonga. It is not run often, so do book as soon as you can.
The tour is split into 3 courses at three homes. The bus picks you up at your hotel and delivers you to each home. The bus ride itself is a lot of fun, with singing and ukelele playing. You also get to see parts of the island you might not otherwise.
The first course was at the home of Nono, who greeted us with flowers and champagne. She gave us a tour of her property and treated us to a talk about the culture of family and property on the Cook Islands. The food was delicious, varied, and plentiful. The banana salad was amazing, and new to us.
The second course was at the home of Kafo and Papa Pai. Kafo also spoke with pride of her history and culture and Papa Pai proved himself to be another talented musician. The food was fantastic, and there must have been 20 different dishes (they will have leftovers forever!). Kafo also made sure everyone had wine or fruit juice.
The dessert course was at the home of Tara and Bates. I cannot eat sugar, so I didn't even go to the buffet. Then my husband brought me a plate of ripe and delicious fruit. I am deeply grateful for the thoughtfulness of offering fruit!
This is an evening we will never forget!! Thank you to everyone that made it possible!!

This is an essential tour. You meet the local family’s in their homes, as they share their stories and their cuisine. This experience will only enhance your holiday to the Cook Islands and will provide a complete experience which will ensure you take home with you an understanding of the people who make the Cook Islands what they are. A piece of paradise.

This is a great concept, but we were disappointed with a few aspects of our tour:
- The group size was very large (about 25 people, including some rather rowdy children); we were hoping for something smaller and more intimate. As it was, there wasn't much opportunity to interact with the homeowners.
- We only went inside one of the three houses, eating outside at the other two.
- The talk at the final house was great, but we felt we didn't learn much at either of the other venues, or during the bus ride (some commentary during the drive would have been great).
There was plenty of food, and it was delicious, and the hosts seemed like lovely people, but at $99 a head, we felt the whole thing was rather overpriced considering the number of people they were pushing through.
Visiting a church on Sunday turned out to be a better way to meet and mingle with locals.

We have noted the comment on the size of the groups. We are mindful of the size of groups to allow the interaction with your hosts. First the minimum size to operate the tour is 10 and the maximum is 25 a bus load. The minimum is set after discussions by host families who are committed to planning their lives every week around their hosting of the progressive dinner. Thus the minimum number makes it worth their time and effort to host. As to the ideal maximum size 25 is a bus load. I am willing to concede different people and cultures have different perception of what is a suitable or intimate size. For catering purposes 25 is not a big size at all for Cook Islands families. but 25 is the limit we have set. Now that the numbers are consistently in the 20's and upward for the two night we currently operate each week, we have decided to operate three nights a week starting next week starting next week.
Because we are in the tropics most Cook Islands home will host any group gathering on verandas and open decks, weather permitting, much more comfortable and airy. As to learning from hosts. At your first stop, unless it was raining your host would taken you on a tour of their property showing their gardens and other outside amanities related to theri family life. At each host after your meal the host would take 10-15 minutes giving your group back group to heis or her family. Information ranging from where they come rom, their home set up. a little family history land they own etc. Its also a time for questions from guests. I am sorry if you feel that this was not enough because we have emhasized to our hosts that this interaction with guests is an important part of the Progressive Dinner experience. We have been running the Progressive Dinner tour for 145 years and we value all comments from our guests. Temu Okotai, Managing Director, Cook Islands Tours. .

At first I wasn't sure if I was going to like this or not, I thought i might be weird. However after the first 10 minutes at the first stop, it was like you were visiting family in their own homes. Each house was unique and the hostesses were warm and friendly. I even teared up a little once I left each location as you really felt welcomed at each place.
This is a good opportunity to experience something new and different. Many new foods were experienced on this venture, the drivers were great and each place had live and local entertainment which just added to the beauty of the night. Highly recommended.

The evening starts at around 5PM when the tour bus picks you and your co-diners from your designated accommodation.
You are then taken into 3 people’s homes where you stay for about an hour. You are made to feel very welcome as a valued guest with a reception at the front of house, a tour of their homes and a prayer said.
The food is served in a banquet fashion with entrée at the first home, mains at the second and leading up to dessert at the last.
Simply said, you can expect a feast fit for a king!
All dishes are prepared using local fresh ingredients and served in a family gathering style.
The mammas, aunties & uncles are fantastic individuals and hearing their stories was a privilege. Last but not least our guides were hospitable and included the touring company owner Timmu on the Ukulele!
==> Frankly not to be missed!

Jul 2021 • Friends
Extremely disappointed as I am currently in Rarotonga and had the staff at the Rarotongian Resort book the Proggesive dinner and was there as the booking was made, we were told to be outside the resort at 5:20pm on Thursday July 1st and we would be picked up and to pay the driver $198 for the two of us. We made sure to be early and sat there for over 1/2 hr then went back to the resort reception who phoned and were told the next dinner wasnt till next Monday, no reason was given as to why we were left stranded and no attempt was made to contact us. I find this kind of treatment to be shocking in this post covid enviroment. We were really looking forward to making contact with locals and believe strongly in supporting local businesses. Wish them well but would suggest better communication with their clients. They had our hotel name and room number.

First, I sincerely apologize for the disappointment and inconvenience your experience with your Progressive Dinner booking. We now run the Progressive Dinner .twice a week as we are just starting up after been closed for 15 months due to COVID 19.
To run the Progressive Dinner we need a minimum of ten people. As we are just building up sometimes the minimum number is not reached.
When persons book, if the number has not been reached at the time, we advise them that of the situation and we will advise them 24 hrs before the scheduled tour if this is not going to happen.
In your case we only had 4 for that tour so on the afternoon before the day of the tour our reservation rang the hotel. She could not make contact with you in your room so she asked the hotel reception to pass on the message about the cancellation. Our reservation has a note on this and the person spoken to at the hotel reception was Tai. She obviously failed to communicate to you the cancellation.
If the tour was on that evening the first hosting home is only a mile away and the driver stays with the tour, so he could have come back and picked you up. That is in the unlikely event of you missing out on your first pickup.
To make up for your disappointment, we would like to offer you and your partner a free Progressive Dinner tour on your next trip to Rarotonga. Just contact me and mention your July 21 disappointment of missing out.
Sincere regards
Temu Okotai

Great to be part of a diverse group of tourists as part of this tour. We visited 3 different families and ate a different course of the meal in each home. The food was based on traditional Cook island dishes and there seemed to be something for everyone. While we ate the hosts shared some stories and or told us a little bit about themselves and their background. There was some music and singing ( personally we would have liked more) and also some prayer to start and close proceedings. Every host provided a generous amount of food and plenty of selection. Desserts were extremely diverse.
The stand out dish was the Ika Mata served as our entree… simply superb.

It was fabulous to share this dinner with 24 other people and experience the local food and a huge thank you to the three hosts whose houses we went to to experience the dinner.
The food was amazing and a great way for us to experience the food and the culture. The local musicians who accompanied us on the bus, entertained us throughout the night.
All of the hosts told us of their local culture and it was a wonderful experience.
Don't miss it.

Loved this tour. The food was plentiful and all delicious. So was the drink, homemade lemonade, local tropical fruit juice, or wine. The hosts were friendly and informative, as was the organiser who travelled with us. Entree, was as much as a meal, mains had great choices, and all the desserts were delicious. I was too full to go back for seconds! Also appreciated the grace before the meals and prayer of blessing at end of mains, plus the duet of the Cooks National anthem at close of the evening. Even the occasional shower did not detract. Loved the banter between the mains 'boss' and the 'houseboy'. We are just a senior couple, but there were other couples and young people. We warmly recommend this tour, as it gave us a chance to mingle with local people.

For the entree, Ike mata, cook island sweet potatoes, taro... for the main, chicken, white rice, fried rice, cook island chow mien, some kind of vegetable(s) (can’t recall exactly), and perhaps one or two other things. For dessert, fruit salad, pavlova (yum!), a delicious tart, apple crisp, and ice cream. Lots to choose from and all VERY delicious!

HI, I notice on reviews that big groups dont work so well?? and from cheffoodie that dessert appeared to be bought from a supermarket...wht is the situation on the evening of 26th August at this stage? 2 people...thanks.

I suppose it depends on your host. We had homemade desserts, like pavlova, apple crisp, and a tart. The progressive dinner is about the food but also the information you get about the lifestyle and culture there.

Hi, what part of the island is your tour out of? We'll be staying in two different places while there for 2wks and hope to schedule a tour with you when we are in whichever location is most convenient. Thank you.
