Highlights
  • Go on a tour with a special purpose—to find great places to photograph
  • Cover lots of ground—travel between Queenstown and the Southern Lakes
  • Hassle-free trip with door-to-door transport included
  • See filming locations from movies including “Lord of the Rings”
What to expect
  • Begin your tour with an early morning pick-up from your Queenstown, Frankton or Arrowtown hotel by private vehicle, and head straight into the hills around Queenstown to make the most of the morning light. From a high vantage point like Skippers Saddle, enjoy spectacular views of not only Queenstown, Frankton and Arrowtown, but the entire Wakatipu Basin. With the help of your guide, a professional photographer, learn how to get the best out of your camera, and master manual settings like aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Then, turn your lens towards the stunning landscapes below, and follow your guide’s advice on composition and lighting as you try your hand at landscape photography. After taking in the views from above, your tour route depends on your individual preferences. You could choose to head West toward Glenorchy, Paradise and Kinloch, where you can shoot cascading waterfalls, abandoned gold mines and Lord of the Rings filming destinations around Lake Wakatipu, and the Dart and Rees Rivers. Heading East, you’ll be treated to the rugged cliffs and canyons of the Crown Range, Gibbston Valley, Coronet Peak, and Kawarau Gorge. Alternatively, travel south past Lake Wakatipu and around the base of the Remarkables Range, where you can photograph wild rivers, alpine peaks, and an old steam railway. Finally, you could head North over the Crown Range toward Wanaka, tackling New Zealand’s highest mountain road, and enjoying views of Lake Wanaka, Mount Aspiring and the Southern Alps. Along the way, pick up plenty of expert tips and enjoy ample opportunities to hone your photography skills and capture some winning shots. There will be time for lunch (own expense) in one of the villages en-route, and after your tour is over, you’ll be dropped back at your Queenstown hotel.

Wonderful and instructive day
My experience with Martin was a complete success. His knowledge of the area and low key teaching style gave me lots of opportunities to try things and then he made suggestions that made each shot better. I came away with a better "eye" and additional skills I will use everytime I think about capturing a scene. I highly recommend this tour.

Thanks so much for your comments. Shooting landscapes can be a fun creative challenge, especially in our mountainous region. It was great seeing you taking up the challenge and trying out new ways of looking.

Time with a photographer in his backyard
Feb 2020 • Solo
Martin's enthusiasm for the area around Queenstown and Cromwell is matched only by his knowledge of photography. He has an easy open style that belies his focus on getting you to and helping you get the right shot. After spending a day with him I had a much greater appreciation of the various options on my camera as well as how to compose a shot. Out the back of Queenstown and Cromwell I had plenty of time to practice and learn. I would recommend him without hesitation.

Thanks, Neil for you your comments. It's was great going out with someone as passionate about the landscapes and with an already high-level of skill and still be able to contribute to your knowledge. I hope this spurs you on to capture more of this amazing country.

Full day Queenstown and surrounding Photography Lesson/Tour
Feb 2019 • Solo
I booked this photography tour to get the best of the area. I had no expectations; I was picked up at 8am and came back around 6pm; that being said, time flew by ! Martin was fantastic at bringing me to unique areas, showing me how to use my camera to capture the best picture and overall, making me feel very comfortable to ask any questions I may have had. I would absolutely recommend this tour to anyone that wants to see the unique landscape of New Zealand and take some pictures and or wants to learn a little more about photography. Martin is so easy going and genuinely enjoys sharing his passion with others.

I had a great day and if I am so lucky to return to New Zealand would book a second tour to further my photography knowledge and visit new parts of the area !

Thank you so much for the wonderful day !

All I hoped for and more
Nov 2018 • Solo
I would consider myself amatuer landscape/outdoor photographer. My hope in with booking with Martin was two-fold. First to be taken to places with beautiful views and second to learn from a pro. Both my hopes were met to more than my satisfaction. I spent two full days with Martin. One day around Wanaka and One day around Queenstown. I have good equipment and a good eye for what looks good but Martin helped me with various aspects of getting a "shot". He helped me most with composition I think. He was quite familiar with the area and we drove around to various spots where we would then both take photos side by side. I would show him my pic and he would make suggestions and show how he was composing etc.
Well worth my time and money. I have lots of great photos from my New Zealand trip. I think they were helped by my experience with Martin.

A tour of paradise
Sep 2018 • Couples
Our full-day private tour with Martin was all we had hoped. The most spectacular scenery, no crowds, no rush, a knowledgable and enthusiastic guide sharing his passion for landscapes and natural beauty, AND he has lots of ideas on how to capture this world with a camera. Beautiful memories are guaranteed. He's an inspired photographer and a gentle teacher and I now find myself thinking about every photo and how I can make it better. A wonderful day that went too fast. Highly recommended. Thanks, Martin.

Time All Spent
Feb 2018 • Couples
My wife and I spent a full day with Martin and had a thoroughly enjoyable and informative time. Martin took us to locations we would not have easily found on our own. They were excellent locations for images. We toured the wine region, got to see a restored Chinese gold miners camp, and the original Bungee jump bridge (still in operation). In addition we enjoyed lunch in a quaint local cafe ( with very good food) and took a ride to the highest point on a public road in the region. Along the way we saw remarkable rock formations and expansive views of valleys and rivers. All in all it was an excellent tour and I would highly recommend it.
