- 499scarlets0 contributionsBest trip we had in Queensland!Honestly, better than I expected!! The cruise, the food is amazing, and the sheep show is so awesome! Very elegant place and food is elegantly presented. Very beautiful trip, best we had in Queenstown.Written 5 October 2024
- gerardmW7699SY0 contributionsWhen in Queenstown it is worth the effort. We did the cruise and BBQ lunch option which was good fun and well worth the money. The view over to Walter Peak Farm on the steamship, with a bonus of seeing the steam engine operating, was beautiful. TheBBQ lunch was really very nice and the quality of the food for a large amount of people was excellent. The sheep and dog show was interesting and funny and such a clever dog.Written 2 October 2024
- Joseyjo640 contributionsGreat afternoon excursionIt was very busy with lots of people on board, but there was still plenty of room to move around the ship to explore. The old photos and the steam engine rooms were great to see. It was a smooth cruise out to Walter Peak Station. The BBQ lunch was amazing. A large range to choose from and the desserts were divine! It was an awesome round trip, and a day to remember.Written 1 October 2024
- FoodnTravelreviews0 contributionsVery nice way to spend some time in QueenstownI surprisingly enjoyed this activity. It was a great way to fill a few hours in Queenstown. The boat has a lot of history. There was live music and a cafe on board. Interesting to see the boiler room and how the steam boat runs ! After a leisurely 40 minutes you arrive at the farm. It is a gorgeous property and I loved walking around it. While I'm not much of an animal person I still enjoyed the farm tour and the views of the property. Afternoon tea was very nice , plenty of food. Not sure if the scones are an authentic recipe but tasty nonetheless. Only downside was the toilets . They were quite smelly and could do with a spruce and a refurb. Then a leisurely cruise back to Queenstown. The boat is packed and travellers can get quite pushy when lining up to get off the boat for some reason, so I suggest just hanging back a bit to avoid people standing right up against you.Written 29 September 2024
- Nicola S0 contributionsWorthwhileI had heard good things about the TSS Earnslaw lake cruise and it was a great way to enjoy the grandeur of Queenstown's mountains so we booked. We weren't disappointed. It was easy to find, fun to experience and had great photo opportunities. The meal at the Walter Peak Farm experience was delicious and so filling we didn't eat dinner. We also thoroughly enjoyed the farm experience show. Just a great afternoon all round!Written 26 September 2024
- KristinaB27700 contributionsEqual parts great and not greatThis cruise and dinner trip is something I have wanted to do for years and years. I was so excited to book it in for our wedding anniversary. It was $189 per person, which included the cruise they and back, dinner and a farm show. I was hopeful that the price would reflect the amazing night ahead. + the cruise over was great, and the cruise back spectacular. The views during daylight were awesome, and the lights at night were amazing. + The staff on arrival were welcoming + the beef, pork chicken & lamb were genuinely the best I have had. All were proudly labelled NZ... so you knew what it was and where it came from. + the desserts were also fabulous - we were called up in groups of tables and it was like a stampede. You literally could not move at some points without bumping into people carrying laden plates - the hot vege selection was uninspiring and as my husband said, we eat better at home. The pictures on the advertising of piles of interesting looking salads etc, simply didn't exist. - drinks were not included in the $189, and were requested upon seating, only to not be delivered. The young lady looking after our section was no where to be seen so we had to actively look around and flag down someone else, who helped, a long way into our celebratory dinner. - chairs and tables are cheap. Plastic chairs and wooden tables on metal pedestals you would find in cafes, not a'deluxe ' dinner. They were also stacked in so when the gentleman behind me stood and pushed his chair back, he always hit mine. - cleaning began before the dinner service ended, and with the BBQ grill being indoors, the space was soon filled with thick blue smoke that had people coughing and eyes watering. - The room emptied out for the farm show, which we decided to not see. We are kiwis and have seen farm shows lots before, we asked if we could stay there, and were told it was absolutely fine. We decided to have a coffee by the fire. Coffee was also surprisingly not included in the $189 per head price tag. We could not see our wait staff, again, so went to the bar to order coffees, only be told it had to be ordered at the table. So we waited. Eventually we waved at kitchen staff, who came to ask if we were OK, we again asked for a coffee, they said sure, and we felt seen & heard. 20 min later, no coffee. The restaurant was being swept and cleaned around us, chairs moved, things in the kitchen banged around. Again, another staffer asked if we were ok, we asked about the coffee, and this time we received it, too hot to drink in the time we had left. All in all, for nearly $400 for the two of us we expected something more special for our wedding anniversary dinner. In hindsight I wish we had done a cruise there and back for $99 each, and had dinner in a restaurant in town. Kiwi hospitality was really missed here, and other tables could be heard commenting on $100pp for dinner .Written 25 September 2024
- awaywegoFlorida0 contributionsFantastic Buffet Lunch in Beautiful SettingHighlight of our stay in Queenstown! Relaxing ride on steamship to and from Walter Peak followed by delicious buffet lunch with diverse offerings of meats, salads and desserts. Enjoyed lamb, beef, chicken and pork freshly carved. Great cheese selection, artichoke hearts, roasted potatoes and cauliflower plus more. Topped off with mousse, sticky toffee pudding and cherry tiramisu. Great views at inside or outside tables. Sheep shearing and dog herding exhibition was well done.Written 24 September 2024
- TheEatos0 contributionsMust do in QueenstownSuch a professionally run operation. Friendly crew on the ship and attentive staff at the farm. Fantastic buffet, fresh and lots of variety with gluten free options. The entertainment on the boat was wonderful too.Written 23 September 2024

- stevelR1867VU0 contributionsEarnshaw bbq cruise.Did the cruise in April 2024. What else is there to do in Queenstown. Went for the buffet as the photos and videos looked great but reality was a lot less. The great desserts were only a figment of imagination. The great grills and roasts were only about as good as a local pub. Salads were quite good. but i was there for the new zealand beef and lamb, it was disappointing.Written 16 September 2024
- 481francesi0 contributionsLoved the whole experience, highly recommendWe lived this experience from start to finish. The cruise across the Lake was beautiful, the staff were so lovely and looked like they really enjoyed what they do and who they work with. The food buffet was delicious and the meat was so tasty and great selection of seafood and salads. Then the desert options were fabulous and so yum!! We then watched a show with Mia the sheep dog and a very cute little lamb bouncing around loving life. Mia showed us her skills rounding up sheep and was so talented. The show was great with a nice Scottish lad giving us a great run down of the station, history and how everything works. We throughly enjoyed ourselves and will come back for a day trip as our experience was the dinner cruise and I’d love to come back and do a farm horse trek and afternoon tea.Written 11 September 2024
- RhysU10 contributionsBest food in townThe old ship is amazing. Build the same year as the titanic. Pretty cool. The only coal fire steamship still in operation in the southern hemisphere. The buffet at the farm was truly exceptional! I would definitely recommend to anyone in Queenstown.Written 9 September 2024
- 947jodiej0 contributionsWonderful food and sceneryI love going to this farm. Every time I go to Queenstown, I go and visit. I love the animals. The scenery is spectacular. Are usually do the afternoon tea but this time decided to upgrade to the buffet lunch. It was definitely delicious. There was heaps of food provided.. My favourite dish was Māori sweet potato gnocchi. Delicious!!! The only reason I didn’t give it 5/5 was we were given very few instructions about how the tour would take place . We nearly missed the sheep and sheep dog show as we were not given instructions.Written 7 September 2024
- 60chikat0 contributionsThis cruise ship is not only a cruise, a lot more!If you are thinking to take a cruise ship in Queenstown, you must choose this one along anyother cruise. You get to explore the olden day's steam ship inside, and get to see many farm animals otherside of the lake with this tour. On top of that, there was piano live in the cruise. Not only that, between the farm tour they provide buffet style of hand made sweets and savouries with drinks at the historical cute restaurant. They were amazingly tasty. Those above are all included in the tour fee, I think that was the best fee I paid for. Highly recommend to anyone, single, couple, family, and friends.Written 1 September 2024

We did a day trip with early AM pickup from our Queenstown hotel to Doubtful. as all the overnights were booked out. We booked through our hotel (Hilton Queenstown) Our coach driver (Chris) did a stellar job driving and narrating sights, history, custom, and nature as we drove out to Lake Manaupori and then did the two boats, one more bus excursion through Doubtful Sound. Definitely the one to see . Great Nature, scenery. Real Journeys has quality equipment, crew and is a well oiled operator. What one wants on a long day filled with gorgeous scenery. High marks.

We attended early December during mild wet weather and it was amazing. All the staff are welcoming and friendly - smiling all the time. The boat was immaculately clean and well stocked for everyone. There were good hand rails and steps throughout the boat that made walking a breeze. The quality of food offered was 5 star and were never left hungry. The water activities were nice but would be better if they were a longer duration and explored different areas not accessible by main boat. Overall a nice, smooth trip to meet lots of new people and form new friendships - will definitely be back to experience the 2 overnight trip

I've been to Doubtful Sound several times over the years, always as day trips unless you count school camp at Deep Cove which was many years ago. So we took the opportunity to do the 2 night cruise at short notice (closed borders have their side benefits). At 50 years of age, we were one of the youngest couples on board, it definitely seemed an older persons thing to do, for New Zealanders anyway.
The crew were fantastic. We went in and out of every side passage, including ones i hadn't been into before so that was great. Highlight of the trip was the kayaking, as we woke up to a clear calm sunny morning and it was great. Hall Arm was the most scenic and incredibly beautiful. The weather had turned moody by the time we got there, but it was atmospheric. We found that the remainder of the cruise involved a great deal of sitting around and looking at the scenery, which is presumably why it appeals to the older folk. It was a little too much sitting around for our liking, but that isn't a criticism - we knew that would be the case when we booked, it just means next time we go back it'll be on a kayak not a cruise boat.
Food was plentiful and good. We ate far more than we needed to but couldn't seem to help ourselves. We were in a quad share and fortunately had the section to ourselves. It's very small and would have been cramped with two extra adults . As a group of friends it would be fine though, it's more when you're sharing with strangers. The doors are curtains not solid doors so bring earplugs. We found the beds warm and comfortable, albeit narrow bunks (as we had expected). The only downside of our sleeping area is the whole bottom deck is a bit smelly. Sort of a vaguely musty sewer smell. It's only noticeable on first going down to the deck, once you've been down there for a couple of minutes we didnt' notice it.
Overall, a great trip, really pleased we finally did it.

We got an amazing deal with real journey for the overnight cruise paid $220 for a standard room in a cabin with 3 other ladies. Meals includes evening soup, dinner, breakfast and pre lunch snack was a huge amount of food all buffet type of style. Also got to kayak around the forest front of one of the arms - although not much information given about what we were seeing unfortunately. Staff on board however are amazing giving help where ever needed and explaining lots about the beautiful scenery. We visited a few different arms of the sound and saw dolphins, penguins and seals. I especially liked the moments of silence where all passengers and the boat were silent and all you could hear was the water falls and birds. Would definitely recommend this tour!

Can't rate this trip highly enough. Doubtful Sound is quite different from Milford, in that it lacks the dramatic sheer cliffs, but it definitely has its own magic. It is a lot bigger than Milford Sound and the overnight cruise is definitely the way to go to experience it.
The boat was very comfortable. Our private cabin was compact (as you'd expect) but very nice. It did get a bit hot overnight but I was very impressed with the facilities.
There is a good balance of (optional) activities and downtime just watching the scenery go by. The commentary was informative and entertaining. I'm quite fascinated with the 'Catastrophic Forest' and with the way the landscape has been carved out by ancient glaciers. We also saw dolphins, seals, and an albatross (Mollymawk).
The big boat has a shallow keel, allowing it to get in close to the cliffs in some places. We had calm weather so were also able to go out in to the open ocean and run across the front of the fjiord with the sails up. Standing at the front it was easy to imagine an old-timey sailing ship and the first explorers.
We were unsure what the quality and quantity of food would be and actually packed some snacks just in case. Don't do this. The food is amazing, better than most restaurants, and it just keeps coming. I honestly can't believe they prepared all of it on board the ship!
On top of all of this, what really made the trip was the staff. They must have worked like dervishes behind the scenes to make the experience as seamless as it was, but their smiles never slipped. They were unfailingly attentive and approachable and I was amazed to see how many different jobs each individual did. Well done, crew!
My partner and I are now kind of Fiordland junkies and are planning our next trip. Our two visits so far have been sunny and I'm dying to see the area in the rain.

This was one of my favourite things that I've done since living in New Zealand for the past 2 years.
We saw humpback whales, dolphins, penguins and sea lions.
We went kyaking, and jumped into the beautiful waters of the sound.
The food was AMAZING and felt like we were constantly eating!
We could not fault any of the crew; they were well practiced at what they do, and the Nature Guide was extremely interesting!!

I won't repeat the positives that have been posted...outstanding crew; great food; beautiful scenery. But...on boarding in the rain and fog, we were told we were experiencing typical Doubtful Sound weather where it rains 2 out of every 3 days!(Doubtful Sound we are now told is in the rainiest region of NZ). That made the 24 hour overnight trip a washout, so to speak. Kayaking was still possible, but in a cold rain it wasn't really enjoyable. We had a much better experience doing a day cruise the prior day in Milford Sound. Milford Sound is also a more dramatic fiord than Doubtful Sound. So unless you get lucky with the weather in Doubtful Sound (the odds are against you), you can save a ton of money and see better sights by going to Milford Sound instead.

A wonderful experience immersed in a time capsule.
Anyone who laments the loss of natural habitat around the world will find solace in the calm majesty of Doubtful Sound. This is good for the soul, and the crew of The Wanderer, capacity 36 passengers, enhance the experience with their quiet enthusiasm for their workplace. And what a workplace! No helicopters, paragliders or jet skis. Just the magnificent scenery, with expert guidance and superb food to accompany it all. The boat is very comfortable, and safety always paramount.
The access is an adventure in its own right; a cruise over Lake Manapouri, followed by a 45 minute coach ride with expert commentary about the temperate rainforest you traverse over Wilmer Pass. Centuries-old trees festooned with outlandish mosses, lichen and algae clinging to precipitous slopes that soar above the pass. At Deep Cove you embark on the boat, and your cruise begins. Jaw-dropping images as steep slopes plunge into calm dark waters. There are playful dolphins and whales visit to rid themselves of unwanted passengers that are unable to tolerate the freshwater that sits in a layer above the saltwater below. Kayaking, guided tours in the boat’ tender and swimming are all available.
Early morning is magical as the light changes. In all seasons and weather this is unmissable.

From the moment we stepped aboard the Real Journeys bus in Queenstown and were enthralled by Niall’s commentary, we knew this was going to be an amazing adventure. The coach trip to Manapouri was comfortable and really informative. Nice ferry ride across the lake to West Arm and then the trip over Willmot Pass. Amazing views. Then the real adventure began on the Fiordland Navigator. Captain Dave, Courtney and the rest of the crew provided a fascinating experience in one of the most remote parts of NZ. Doubtful Sound is simply beautiful. Great fun exploring by kayak/tender. Fantastic food from master chef Jorge. An forgettable experience we would do again.

I experienced this overnight cruise in (NZ) summer with my adult daughter on the smaller boat which had 32 guests aboard and I echo all the positives shared here.
The boat is well appointed, spotless and comfortable whether en suite or not (we selected shared bathrooms which were kept very clean throughout and it's only one night!). The crew are really friendly, helpful and knowledgeable, giving information and commentary on the voyage (and taking videos and photos for us), the food is plentiful and of a very high standard and hot and cold drinks are constantly available.
I strongly disagree with those who feel that the weather needs to be good! We had the most atrocious conditions in this very wet part of New Zealand, persistent heavy rain and low cloud, but this created the most spectacular waterfalls and mists for us, and created a fabulous, eerie atmosphere. A quick swim in the fjord in the pouring rain, followed by a hearty supper, was an incredible experience too ( those who kayaked in the rain were invigorated by their experience too). Just do make sure you have the right clothing i.e. layers and a good waterproof jacket and embrace whatever weather you get! This cruise isn't about 'dressing for dinner'!
The cloud often lifts in the early morning so be prepared to get up early, wrap up warm, take a hot drink on deck to soak up the wonder and potential of our planet. Magic!
I had previously taken a day cruise on Milford Sound and that is a different experience. Many more people and boats and just as likely to be wet weather, but if you have limited time then that's a wonderful taste of the fjords.
However, if you have the time and can afford the (I think reasonable) fare then the journey to Doubtful Sound (a boat across Lake Manapouri and an entertaining bus ride to your boat) adds to the experience of a fjord without other craft and minimal people. I highly recommended it as a truly memorable experience.

We saw several penguins - some in the water and some on shore. It was due, I believe, to our captain and his ability to spot them. I have seen penguins in the Antarctic and still got excited.
These are Fjordland Crested penguins. You also have an opportunity to see other penguins along the east coast of New Zealand. Mind you, this was in Doubtful Sound. I cannot speak to Milford Sound. Best thing we did was to take the overnight cruise - small, delicious food, including crayfish (lobster) that we were gifted to take with us when we left and had for dinner the following evening.
