The service will make your name in Kanji, or Japanese alphabet, and write it in Shodo, or Japanese calligraphy. When you step into this shop, you will be welcomed by a traditional Japanese atmosphere and women dressed in kimonos and tell them about yourself such as your personality, hobbies etc. Then, the concierge will create your Kanji name based on the information you have given. After you have chosen a name for yourself, a professional calligrapher will write your Kanji name for you in front of you. You will enjoy seeing this traditional performance, Shodo. This paper will be then framed and wrapped in a Furoshiki, or Japanese traditional cloth. A piece of paper that explains the meaning behind the Kanji characters used for your name will be included. *This service will take around 20 to 40 minutes per person.

If you like Calligraphy scrolls this is a MUST in Tokyo!
We found Kanji house with my wife because we were looking for a hanging scroll to adorn our house and to keep memories of our trip to Japan! We spoke to Rina who was incredibly friendly and helpful in fulfilling our requests and she set an appointment for us within one hour from my mail! Upon arrival we’ve been welcomed in a very nice and cozy environment and welcomed by Rina and her friend calligrapher (can’t remember his name!) who were very friendly throughout the whole process! Instead of our names, we wanted to write few words that would symbolize the marriage and family and Rina was very helpful in finding a good and esthetically pleasing solution for us! They have been so nice to let us also take picture and video of the whole process which is quite pleasing to watch in real life! If you like calligraphy you would certainly appreciate the skill of Rina associate! All in all, a great experience, one of those unique and remarkable things that let you enjoy the true essence of Japan culture! Truly highly recommended!!!

      Awesome Calligraphy!
One of the artists abroad in the US held a one-day event at a festival in DC, and I decided to get one done. I came a bit late after the event, but I was happy that she was willing to write one for me. I have a Chinese name already and it's a bit boring to write, so after some thinking, I asked her to write an idiom in Japanese for me. It turned out great! I will hang it on my wall once I do some cleaning. She was very nice too. Would highly recommend. It makes a great gift, souvenir, or art piece. It also makes me really want to learn how to write calligraphy myself (I'm sure it's not easy though!)

Excellent and hospitable service... and calligraphy
Minami was prompt and accommodating in her reply (with arranging my reservation). Was not aware that the weekend was their off-day but she waited and attended to my appointment. I informed her of the Kanji characters that I wanted and the calligrapher’s style. She was kind enough to make the arrangement. Am happy with the piece and it’s hanging proudly with my other art collections. (Requested for 2 calligraphy pieces to be made.) Minami was also kind enough to briefly show me around Asakusa Temple before her next appointment. A must visit and do support them, if you are interested to bring something unique back from Japan, this is it.

      Brilliant Tour of Tokyo
Our Rickshaw guide for the morning was Kazuki. This was our first ever visit to Japan and he made us both feel very welcome. He was very informative and it was a pleasure spending time with him. His knowledge of Japanese culture and the area we travelled was fantastic, we also had a good laugh during our trip, which was an added bonus. Big thanks to Kazuki for making this trip even more special. Would recommend this trip for anyone travelling to Tokyo. Many thanks Claire and Adrian, England.

Amazing!!!! Especially for a single traveller
I was extremely impressed by Milo and Minami! They were kind and friendly and responded to my email promptly, making it possible for me to do this experience before I left Japan. In a city that is large and exciting, the term 'house' is highly appropriate. As this experience not only provided a wonderful cultural lesson, it was also inviting, warm and Comfortable. I felt at home speaking with them and discussing character, culture and learning about their language system. Milo is a wonderful artist and be sure to understand that what hey do is exactly that : an art. Both Minami and Milo are wonderful conversationalists. This was definitely a highlight from my trip.

      Visit to Kanji House
I visited with my 2 nephews (11 and 16) and their grandmother (Spanish-speaker). They enjoyed the experience very much. They enjoyed hearing what their name meant and what the thought process was. An extra bonus was that the teacher spoke some Spanish, which was much appreciated! He even emailed us a Spanish version of the character meanings when we returned home! Great experience and nice souvenir!

      Not kid friendly at all
I booked this for my 9 year old and myself to have a cultural Japanese experience. While it was very educational and interesting to me as an adult, I can in no way recommend this to families with kids under age 12. My 9 year old was bored senseless by the teacher, a young man in early 20s, discussing multiple meanings of Japanese letters. The discussion of linguistics went way over her head and the teacher did little to engage her. It is a very small room with little to do except sit and listen which is hard for most children. A previous reviewer said they had a 6 and 8 year old?

      Closed?
I stopped by during the posted hours on trip advisor (1pm on a Saturday) but they were closed, and didn't see any English sign with opening hours posted. I guess you can only book via email, in advance.

      Great experience in kimono
The organisation was great. People were great at the kimono house and the guide was ABSOLUTELY great. Going around Asakusa at new year period is a must do, with a lot to see and to taste. One of the highlight of my trip to Tokyo.

      Good option
We enjoyed our time here. We took the calligraphy, tour and Kimono dress up (for the wife). The definite highlight was the Kimono dress up, and Rivka could also wear it during the tour itself which was a massive bonus. Calligraphy was also nice. Tour was ok, although we were a little unlucky with the weather. It was also easy to whatsapp before we came to confirm our exact time which was appreciated.

      A nice cultural immersion
Very pleasant experience in Tokyo. I was taken in a samurai style costume around Asakusa and it was great especially for pictures. It gets crowded in the afternoon so better to start late when it quiets down a bit for better shots. The Calligraphy souvenir is beautiful and it is unique to its owner. Overall, it's good value for money for a meaningful glimpse of the Japanese culture.

      Guided Tour Service
Norie, my tour guide has a pretty extensive knowledge of Asakusa and its history. She answered all of my questions and took the time to explain them in great details. My phone stopped working, the night before I was about to leave for Tokyo. I had to asked Norie, if we can use her phone to take pictures. She gladly took the photos and emailed them to me. Great Service!

I had my kanji name written which was really interesting to learn about and interesting process. Beautifully written on a small scroll so I can ferry it on my travels:)
I also had a go at calligraphy, and as I was going to a wedding they were very helpful in choosing words in kanji and allowed me to frame my work. They also wrote it properly for me as my attempts weren't perfect so I could give both as a gift (Not surprising when it takes years to perfect the skill). Very patient and encouraging tutors, lovely little room where it all happens. Very affordable price compared to others in Tokyo.

We enjoyed sooo much our experience in Kanji House!!

The staff - Minami & Milo - were super friendly and extremely polite. Their English was very good and the atmosphere is that place, so warm and cozy.

After Milo gave us some explanations about Japanese calligraphy, he asked us few questions about our personalities to selected letter symbols that make up the Kanji spelling of our names.
Minami then beautifully "painted" our names onto a Japanese hanging scroll. That was beautiful to watch, a true artist!

That was definitely the highlight of our trip to Japan :)
Many thanks to Minami and Milo for your warm welcome and kindness :)))

I would highly recommend Kanji House for anyone looking for a magical experience and a unique souvenir from Japan ^_^

I had my name and 3 others written in Kanji. Milo and Rina asked me to describe each person and wrote beautiful Kanji names. They took the time to explain what each character meant and gave me a lesson in Kanji meaning. Watching Milo and Rina write was a great experience, it is truly and art form.

I also learned origami, which I highly recommend.

This was by far my favorite experience in Japan. Milo and Rani spoke perfect English and were very friendly. The house is right near Senso-ji temple and very convient.

I'll keep it short: I bought chop sticks, sake cups, "good luck" charms, candies, toys ..... the list goes on. But your name as a kanji is the best souvenir which I could get!

And it is also suited for a dear friend/your girlfriend/wife, even if she is not here.
A kanji name is based on your original name, but it also incorporates various hobbies, skills and personality traits of the person. To simplyfy it: let's say you are Steven, and you like hiking (and various other hobbys/traits). The staff will look for syllables based on your name ("St-" for example) and your trait. So the first kanji of your name is "St-" with the meaning of "mountain" for example.

It was easily the best experience in Tokyo! Don't miss out!

PS: the staff is super friendly!

What a unique experience. Kind of like having your palm read or horoscope in beautiful letters. The room is small but quaintly decorated. Milo and Rina were extremely friendly and eager to please. The discussion about the 3 different written figures in Japanese was a bit hazy and the manner in which your specific kanji were chosen seemed almost mystical...thus my initial comments. That being said watching Rina "paint" the kanji in calligraphy was special and leaving with the results provided a truly wonderful souvenir.

We got to know about Kanji House in a TV show and had no doubts it should be a place to go on our first trip to Tokyo. We went with our two daughters to have our names written in Kanji and it was a fantastic experience, a very sensitive way to know and witness shodo and its strengh and delicacy. Our Kanji names are now hanged in our living room, reminding of whom we are...We strongly recommend a visit to Kanji House to everyone who wishes to know more about Kanji, Japanese caligraphy and many other aspects of Japanese culture.
