- DBDanza0 contributionsFantastic Tokyo TourFantastic tour through a less travelled part of the amazing city of Tokyo. Andy does a great job showing off his backyard with a unique Aussie view of life in Tokyo. Worth the day out.Written 7 October 2024
- liss5590 contributionsMust do in TokyoWhat a great experience! Cycling around the local streets was awesome, learning more about how daily life in Tokyo runs. Andy was an excellent guide and sorted us out with delicious snacks and lunch. Taught us a few eye openers about some of the micro cultures in Japan too 😂. Highly recommend.Written 9 January 2024
- capnb0b00 contributionsAn absolutely wonderful and unique experienceThis was an absolutely phenomenal experience! My family of 4 (two daughters ages 13 and 15) had a blast with Andy biking through the streets of Tokyo. I was a little apprehensive before the tour that we might be overwhelmed navigating the crowds and traffic but Andy took us on a route through the mostly calm back streets of Koenji and the surrounding neighborhoods. It was fascinating to see a side of Tokyo you just don't get when hitting the tourist hot spots. An added bonus was Andy's commentary as a long time resident about the daily life of raising a family in Tokyo, all while hitting some fantastic street food options. The standing Soba meal was a highlight of our trip. This is a tour not to be missed!Written 28 November 2023
- pdxspeer0 contributionsGreat food and bike rideWe had a great time. The food was fun and the ride was great. The ride was wasn’t that hard except for the tight spaces.Written 17 November 2023
- E5203KHvincentc0 contributionsHighlight of my trip to TokyoMy experience with DIG Tokyo Tours, led by our guide Andy, was amazing. It was the highlight of my trip to Tokyo and exceeded my expectations. Andy took us to the neighborhoods of Nakano, Koenji, and Asagaya, showing us hidden gems that are off the beaten path from typical Tokyo tourist traps. We tried excellent street food and biked and walked through beautiful neighborhoods, parks, and shopping districts. The whole experience felt like you were experiencing Tokyo more as a local than as a tourist. As a local himself, Andy had incredible insights to share with us and we learned a lot about Japanese culture and history. We couldn't have asked for a better guide than Andy who was very friendly, always happy to answer questions, and was attentive to the group's wellbeing, making sure no one was left too far behind while biking. Our group of 8 was of varying cycling and athletic abilities and we all managed to keep up over the course of the 3-4 hours. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Tokyo, first-timers and seasoned vets alike.Written 20 October 2023
- grahamsF3616UD0 contributionsGreat ride, cool neighbourhood.Really enjoyed our trip out with Andy and seeing some of his favourite spots. The food was great, the tour route was well judged, Andy was a great host: warm, friendly, funny, knowledgeable. I’d happily come back for another ride.Written 10 October 2023
- DaveErrington0 contributionsDIG this Bicycle and Food TourWhen we booked out trip to Japan mid-year, we were advised by people who we knew that we 100% needed to do a food and cycling tour with DIG TOKYO TOURS. The guide is an Aussie (Andy) and he gives you a look at the seldom seen parts of Tokyo riding around on restored Japanese Bicycles. On this advice, we booked the tour. In the week leading up to the tour, we did another cycking and food tour through Osaka (see previous review) which only got us more excited for the tour through Tokyo. The meeting point was easy to find - bear in mind, the trains and subway system in Japan is the best public transport system in the world for foreigners - very simple to follow when using Google Maps. I managed to take us in the wrong direction and we got horribly lost. We emailed Andy to tell him that we were going to be late and unfortunately, we'd have to miss the tour. He rang us and gave us instruction on what train line to catch and that he would wait for us - turns out we weren't that far away. Great start to the tour! When we finally arrived, we walked from the train station to where Andy keeps the bikes. The bikes were Mamasari bikes that Andy had salvaged and lovingly retored - they were awesome. Both my wife and kids loved riding them. The bikes do not have gears, but you don't need them. The path Andy takes you on is winding but flat. The information about the local neighbourhoods and how they operate are informative and really interesting. My 12 year old was gobsmacked at some of them!! The food experiences were authentic and enjoyable. The path that Andy takes you is very "out of the way" and you'd be unlikely to experience it if you didn't do his tour. Part of the tour encompassed a trip to the Nakano Broadway and the narrow streets that house a lot of the local restaurants and bars - you will definately have an authentic experience in this district! We went back to that area the night after the tour, whch we never would have found on our own, and had a great evening. Overall, so glad that we were recommended DIG TOKYO TOURS - One of the best expereiences of our holiday! Paying it foward, we can't recommend enough!Written 5 October 2023
- AnglophileinLA0 contributionsGreat food, better stories, totally worth itI learned so much about Japanese culture that I did not know from Andy - and tried foods I haven't yet tried (which is impressive, because this is my third trip to Japan and I have Tokyo-based friends!). It was really fun to be introduced to two parts of the city I haven't explored by someone who knows the area so well. Also, Koenji has a ton of fantastic vintage shops, so my sister and I did a *lot* of shopping after our tour wrapped. So fun!Written 31 May 2023
- 705marcelaw0 contributionsNot to be missed!!Andy’s bike and food tour of Tokyo was a highlight of our time in Tokyo. We weaved through residential neighborhoods in Tokyo while Andy gave us glimpses into Japanese life. He was interesting and knowledgeable about all aspects of Japanese culture. We also walked around Nakano and enjoyed a sampling of typical foods which was fun. We learned so much from Andy and enjoyed joking around with him. His charisma and relaxed attitude makes for a very enjoyable afternoon. We highly recommend this off the beaten path tour!Written 10 April 2023
- Moonbuoy0 contributionsA 100% must do in Tokyo!!!This has easily become one of the major highlights of my entire Japan trip!!! It was absolutely amazing, and provided a local insight into the lived experience of Japan and the local areas of Koenji and Nakano! We would have never gone to these areas had we not booked this, and little did we know these would become some of our favourite areas in all of Tokyo. The tour guide, Andy, is so lovely, friendly and deeply informative. We tried many different types of great local food from vendors and got a lot of advice for what to do for the feast of our trip. 1000/10 could not recommend more!!Written 30 March 2023
- sonyal8970 contributionsA highlight of our trip! Book it now!!This awesome tour is so much fun and perfect to get a glimpse of suburban Tokyo, see how locals live and try food and snacks run by locals. - susan_ku20180 contributionsThe BEST bike tour in Tokyo!I loved experiencing "local life" on a bike with Andy. I had no idea so many people in Tokyo commuted around via bikes. The tour ride itself was easy as we wandered through charming neighborhoods, parks, old alleys (just to name a few) & stopping along the way to eat at gems that I otherwise wouldn't have known about. If there's only 1 tour that you do in Tokyo, its gotta be this! It truly is such an authentic experience that I will always cherish.Written 29 November 2022
- globetrotter214800 contributionsAmazing the beaten track adventure!Great day out with Andy! Learned and saw a very different Tokyo in a charming neighbourhood away from the usual big 'sights', something that a casual visitor would not be able to experience. - MeiMei-Chg0 contributionsA Guide into Japanese life on a bikeAndy, our Australian guide, was just what we were looking for! He patiently answered all our questions. He gave us a better understanding of daily life in Japan. It was so much fun to ride up through different neighborhoods, getting an understanding of how they go to work, put out garbage and deal with living is such tight spaces. The exposure to local foods and markets was just wonderful. Andy was a fabulous host!Written 27 October 2022

This was the absolute best way to begin our trip in Japan. Andy gave us a real sense of Japanese life and we felt super privileged to get a glimpse of areas in Tokyo that many tourists don’t visit. Our teenagers absolutely loved the experience and would recommend Andy’s tour to anyone capable of hopping on a bike.

Highly recommend this tour - we thoroughly enjoyed seeing this area and learning about the Japanese way of life with Andy. He went out of his way to fit us in, which we really appreciated and was also super helpful providing other recommendations for the rest of our trip.
Both of our kids (ages 13 & 15) rated this as one of their favourite activities on our Japan trip!

We knew that when we came to Tokyo, we really wanted to see the city from a bicycle - do as the locals do of course but its also such a great way to take in the vibe of a place and see some tucked away areas you wouldn’t normally get to. We looked into DIG bicycle tours and were immediately drawn to Andy’s site and bike and snack tour through some of the older and less touristy areas of Tokyo.
The tour did not disappoint! Andy was super welcoming and a perfect host. The bikes he provided were comfortable, well maintained and he even had a smaller size for our 10 year old, which was perfect. Andy guided us carefully through the amazing and eclectic areas of Koenji and Asagaya, intermittently stopping to detail interesting historical facts and even everyday ways of Japanese life. The final stop in Nakano tied it all together nicely with an easy walking tour through the shopping district finishing up with some delicious local eats to die for.
Thanks again Andy for such a great afternoon. The ride was easy, enjoyable and a great way to get a snap shot of a small part of this awesome city.

Absolutely the highlight of our Tokyo visit. Highly recommend this Cycling and Food tour for anyone looking for something just slightly off the heavily-trodden tourist track. Andy is a gem- friendly, expert and engaging. A few stops west of Shinjuku, the Koenji and Nakano suburbs are the places we will head to immediately on our next trip. Every street and lane way was a treasure, each pause at a place of interest was fascinating, and every food stop was delicious and generous. The bikes were a pleasure to ride, and for our family, including two teenagers, this tour was easily everyone’s favourite Tokyo memory. Great value and an unforgettable experience.Thank you Andy.

Our family of four really enjoyed the bike tour of Koenji and surrounding neighbourhoods. Andy was an expert guide drawing on his many years of living in Tokyo.
Highlights included delicious standing noodles which we slurped down fast and gaining insights into the way people live their lives in this densely populated place.
If you’re comfortable on a bike, I’d highly recommend this tour as a way to explore a different side of Tokyo.

This cycle tour was THE BEST! It was our first day in Japan and we hit Andy with all our questions while we explored the back alleys, laneways, river and some shops. We loved riding the bikes and exploring the city with a local. Some of the highlights were riding through local neighbour hoods and checking out housing/schools, eating at (and learning the etiquette) of a lunch counter, riding the extra comfy bikes, cruising the river and chatting with Andy about living in Japan. Wish it went all day!! Thanks Andy, we highly recommend this tour to others who are after a great intro to Tokyo and Japan.

We booked a group trip for four of us including a 9 and 12 year old on a transit day. It was a fantastic way to get moving and see Tokyo after a day on the plane. Andy managed the needs of our group perfectly and the tour was well thought out to give us some great insight into Tokyo’s culture and customs. We loved it! Thanks Andy
