About
Cruise the Dart River by jet boat and “funyak” (inflatable canoe) on a full-day tour of Mount Aspiring National Park. Start with an energetic, high-speed ride up the river, then use easy-to-maneuver funyaks to explore hidden streams, rock pools, and chasms. This tour offers more time and more fun amidst the river’s nature and wildlife than a jet boat–only tour, plus a picnic lunch.

Once you’re deep inside the wilderness, trade the jet boat for an inflatable canoe that seats two or three people. Paddling a funyak, you can access places too narrow and shallow for jet boats, exploring the nooks and crannies that make the Dart River so beautiful. Such a great experience
Amazing experience. Daniel our boat driver made the most of the scenery and took the time to show us around this beautiful part of the world. This is a must do whilst in Queenstown and/or surrounding areas. Will be back!

      Approachable adrenaline fun!
Was super fun. I went in a bit nervous as I'm a bit of a chicken when it comes to these things but I actually loooved the speed and the spins that we did :) The sun was out and the views were stunning. The skipper John was great and made sure we all had a great time while teaching us about the surroundings. Was a highlight of my NZ trip for sure. Make sure you dress warm and bring sunnies ;)

      What a fabulous experience!
We loved our jet boat existence with Pedro today! Just the right balance of spins and speed, topped off with interesting insights about the river itself and history of the local people. We felt exhilarated, yet safe, in Pedro’s hands as he navigated the windy and shallow river over 30 kilometres. We had the opportunity to get out the boat for a short walk and to capture some photos too! Definitely take the recommended extra fleece lined coat provided on arrival as the wind is very strong and cold when you’re powering up the river. You’ll also get a life jacket and a good safety briefing too! Good for all ages - the children on our boat had a blast as did the grandparents! A great two-hour trip, with a lovely 45 minute coach trip to the departure point in Glenorchy. Our coach driver gave us a great commentary on the way so we learnt more about the local area and history. A brilliant half day out - left the pick up point at 8:30 and back by 12:45.

Best Jet Boat experience in Glenorchy.
Been on his now twice. Once in 2019 and again this year. Due to a major landslide we could not complete the entire Dart river upstream. Our driver John was great in making the shorten ride enjoyable and informative. It was a bit different in 19 with a bus ride back to base and a couple of stops sightseeing. I missed this ride back and hope they incorporate it in again later down the track.

      Great scenery
We aren't big fans of speeding around in noisy vehicles, and took this trip primarily for the chance to get into Mt. Aspiring National Park. The scenery lived up to our hopes, and I have to admit, the boat stuff was kinda fun. But mainly this was the chance to view some beautiful mountains that would otherwise be hard to see. The boats, the guides, and all aspects of the operation were very well done.

      Dart River adventure
We had a fun time with Dart River Adventures. We rode a bus (45 minute trip) from downtown Queenstown to Glenorchy where we boarded the jet boat. From there we traveled up the Dart River through Mt Aspiring National Park. Our driver would signal when he would do a 360 turn so you could brace. We were in less than 4 inches deep water sometimes and you could hear the rocks scraping the bottom. Beautiful scenery along the braided river.

GREAT jet boat ride with Pedro
My husband and I did the Dart River Jet Boat ride from Glenorchy - we were fortunate enough to have Pedro as our driver!! This was our first experience with a jet boat and we're spoiled for life now!! Pedro was a wealth of information, and gave us a thrilling, but safe ride! All of the Dart River Adventures employees that we came in contact with were wonderful to deal with! Would do this ride again in a heartbeat!!

A great jet boat ride on a glacial river!
My wife and I did the Dart River Jet Boat from Glenorchy during our trip to New Zealand in Jan 2024 and totally enjoyed the ride! We were staying at a Vrbo in Queenstown and this was recommended by our host - about an hours wonderfully scenic drive from Queenstown. We'd recommend it to anyone else as well. The glacial river was filled with gravel and with recent rains in the area the gravel had changed the flow so our 'pilot' needed to watch carefully to see where he could take the boat. Well done both upstream and down, including a few 360's. He was also very informative about the river, the glacier and the surrounding area. It was part of the land used for films such as the Hobbit films and others, so very rugged. Could not have had a better time.

      Great adventure
A jet boat safari to remember. Another must do when you’re in Queenstown and particularly memorable for the astonishing views of the most magnificent landscape including numerous Lord of the Rings locations - stunning! The speed and numerous spins are great fun too…

      Must do must must must.
Best trip ever. Make sure you bring sunglasses as the wind at speed is vicious. Scenery first class. Boat comfortable and ended up pretty dry! Wanted to do it again ......if only. Better than other jet boats on larger lakes as you have the fantastic shallow river dart to traverse.

Great Day on the Dart River!
We had a fabulous time. Our guide, Pedro, was truly excellent at both driving this amazing twin engine jet boat AND being an excellent guide. He knew the local geography, lots of relevant Maori history and stories, and even some Lord of the Rings references. He made it a point to stop and have us hold a huge piece of pounamu so we could appreciate its significance. We felt totally safe and confident in his driving abilities, even when doing a 360! Even our bus driver, Mac, was impressive with his local knowledge and good sense of humor. In sum, it was a truly fun and unforgettable experience. Thank you.

      Exhilarating experience - do it!
We thoroughly enjoyed our time out with Andrew in a jet boat on the Dart River. The way the boat weaves along the river and the occasional stops for information and questions are a welcome break from the excitement. I’d recommend this trip to everyone. It was exhilarating but felt completely safe and the splash costs did their job!

      Incredible!
We had a change in weather when we arrived in Queenstown but….this outfit is very, very professional. We opted to go even though it had been raining and cold. We were driven in comfort to the Dart River location. We had head scarves, rain slickers and life jackets provided. The boats are awesome and John, our pilot, was skilled in providing an optimal trip. I loved the ride into this fascinating back country area. The jet boats are safe and comfortable. This truly was a highlight of the south island!

We did the jetboat-funyak day, and this set us back $1105 as a family of 4. The Dart River is beautiful and one guide, Nina was wonderful, and saved this day from being unbearable. There were 2 kiwis, a male who had a giant chip on his shoulder and a woman who drove the bus and had questionable non PC humor. Very anti-Aussie. Bad taste, when you're a tour guide. If you like being herded about, you'll enjoy this. The buffet lunch was cold cuts, stale bread and pea quiche. The chasm is beautiful but its hard to take a photo being hurried along or having 12 funyaks jammed against you. I had the impression that staff were OVER tourists, and wanted the day to END. When I fell over, dragging my kayak out of the water, the female kiwi guide offered the words 'try not to fall over' and laughed. So comforting. Thanks. Then the bus to take us back wouldnt start. The angry kiwi main guy sat in the broken bus not uttering a word to us, whilst we passed the time on the pebbled beach, being devoured by sand flies and without water. No one had water since lunch. My whole family were gasping when the replacement bus came an hour later. The apology about the bus breakdown included the words 'it wasn't our bus so its not really our fault'. It was probably an amazing tour, back in the day. Staff need to get hospitality training or stay at home. And put some love into the lunch. Also, if you're unfit, make sure you have a friend who can assist you as the currents can be hard work.

    “Five stars - epic”
Our family of 4, with very limited kayak/rafting experience, had a wonderful day with Dart River Adventures.
The jet boat ride, ably driven by Evan, was through incredible scenery and for us it was the right balance level of excitement!
We had a great time being led on funyaks back down the river with a stop for lunch and a visit into an amazing river canyon - and optional swimming (the weather was pretty warm). For a lunch in the wilderness, carried by funyak, it was a great spread with a variety of food and drink options for both the carnivores and vegetarians in our family. We were also introduced to NZ delicacies for dessert including ginger slice and “lolly cake”. Mac was a great guide to our group, giving us enough ‘room’ for us to practise our budding paddling skills (and for our kids to experiment with steering) - yet sufficient instruction for us to negotiate some trickier corners and avoid obstacles. The river was pretty flat, which was perfect for our beginner capabilities, and we arrived at our bus pickup at the aptly named Paradise Beach having all enjoyed our adventure.
Adelaide (hi Adelaide! 😄) did a great job narrating our bus ride back to Glenorchy with a mix of information about the area and cattle jokes.

This is a must do adventure when visiting New Zealand. We caught the bus from Queenstown to Glenorchy, once we arrived we were briefed in all the safety aspects and we were given the clothes we would need for the day. The jet boat was exciting, exhilarating and so much fun, photos were taken that we could purchase later. We then went on to the funyaks, we were briefed and then we were on our way rowing down the river. The guides were patient and thoughtful as many people in the group were beginners. We stopped for delicious club sandwich lunch and a quick float into a chasm before we headed back to the pick up area. A very long day but well worth every minute!

A big shout out to the team at Dart River Adventures. We arrived in Queenstown on the Sunday and booked the Funyak canoe plus Jet Boat tour for Monday hoping it would run with only the two of us. A call on the Monday morning confirming they would run the funyak part of the tour for our party of two. (the jet boat experience incl another couple). A big thank to Ed our jet boat driver who was a lot of fun with our 360 spins and his knowledge and even excitement when we travelled 45kms up the river. We were met by Toby halfway back to commence our funyak paddle. Toby is knowledgeable and nothing seemed to phase him.... even our paddling. The highlight was paddling into the chasm and sitting having a wonderful packed lunch just taking in the views of our wonderful country.

Thanks to the team for making this experience happen.

PS. take insect repellant - those sandflies are big.

The pick up and the quality of the transport to and from was excellent, as was Morgan’s commentary en route. The organisation of the dressing process was funny and very efficient. The jet boat driven by Ben was superb, it had the perfect combination of professionalism, skill, fun and enough thrills to please kids, parents and grandparents (no mean feat!).

The Funyaks were everything we’d hoped for and the enthusiasm and interest by the team of guides was really fantastic. Philip gave great guidance on kayaking and very interesting information on the geology and nature in the area. He and Gareth were superb with the kids, encouraging them to safely push limits and really experience the sensational environment. The kids absolutely loved it.

The day was truly memorable for our family and made so by these fantastic guides as much as the breathtaking scenery. Oh and lunch was amazing too!!

My 9-year old daughter and I had an absolute blast funyaking down the Dart River. Highly recommended. Staff were friendly and provided a great briefing. Drivers and funyak guides were excellent, providing great information and advice along the way. A good lunch is included. We drove out to Glenorchy to take in the beautiful lake scenery rather than take the coach from Queenstown, which provided a bit more flexibility.

We had a fantastic trip up the river dart on the jet boat followed by the funyak. The jet boat is amazing and so skilfully driven by Finn who also gave us lots of information about the beautiful Glenorchy valley. We then picked up our funyaks , such a peaceful way to see the river and the valley, thanks to Sophie our guide who did a great job keeping us going in the right direction !The lunch time stop walking across the braided river bed to another canoeing spot was just wonderful and jumping in to the clear if somewhat freezing water a highlight Top bombing from Toby ! . Would totally recommend this trip , experienced and informative and fun guides who made it a day to remember.

I did this activity as an add on from Contiki. Whilst it was a good day, I think my excitement compared to other activities I did wasn't as strong. I was probably most disappointed as I wanted to take my time whilst rafting and take photos, but it did feel slightly rushed going along the river to be able to stop and properly take in everything (that being said, I should just invest in a go pro).

The jet boat was nice, the rafting was my highlight as I had never been rafting (but I got lucky with the crew I was with who knew what they were doing, so we could raft on our own), and the scenery absolutely incredible, but unfortunately I don't have much to show for it. I enjoyed the food, and the driving tour was okay (but I'm not a big LOTR fan).
Overall I'm glad I did it, but not for $400. $300 at most. I did pay more for other activities on my NZ trip and felt more justified in those prices for the experience I got.

The scenery along the way is amazing, you will experience snow mountains ( almost 360 around you), crystal blue lake and rivers (all the way from end to end), jet will take you to the upstream with many spins to panorama the landscapings, with a mystery paradise adventure surprise before or after delicious handmade lunch.
The guide James is very nice and kind, and will keep you safe all the time.
We really really enjoyed the adventure and will highly recommend to everyone that this is a MUST GO tour if you are on the planet.
    Thanks very much!!!

One of the best days we've had as a Family. Taking all into account while not the cheapest I felt this was terrific value for money. A 30 Minute Jet Boat through the Dart River and then a few hours on the Funyaks with Lunch included. Scenery was unbelievable, the Funyaks were great "fun" and the guides/staff were just terrific. This would be an activity that I would do again and again

Thank you for your review. So pleased to hear that you and your family had such a great day out on our Funyaks trip. It sure is a special part of the world that we operate in, and the Funyaks is a great combo of the fast exhilarating jet boat ride, and a slow float back down the river allowing you to take in the scenery.
