Start with an energetic, high-speed ride up the river, then use easy-to-maneuver funyaks to explore hidden streams, rock pools, and chasms. This tour offers more time and more fun amidst the river’s nature and wildlife than a jet boat–only tour, plus a picnic lunch.

- 569mege0 contributionsDo it!Unfortunately, the weather prevented us from doing the canoe and jet boat experience. We were able to do the jet boat experience and really enjoyed it! It was fun and exhilarating, but also very safe. We would highly recommend this excursion!Written 13 March 2025

- X9231NRstevef0 contributionsDon't miss this one!10/10 on the fun meter. The drive to Glenorchy from Queenstown is picturesque, and if you have a car it is worth stopping in some of the bays. The jet boat up the dart river was a total blast through some of the most beautiful scenery in all of New Zealand. The funyaks were amazing to kayak through the rock gorges and back down the river. Staff was great and I felt like they were extremely well prepared to deal with any weather elements and committed to safety. This is a must-do, you will love it!Written 5 March 2025
- Beth W0 contributionsA must do experience.Had an amazing time even though it was very cold. I wore 5 layers. They provided a head wrap, rain jacket and life jacket. Be sure to wear something over your eyes, either glasses or goggles if you go during a time when the air is cold bc the cold wind blowing in your eyes makes them water and would prevent you from seeing the amazing scenery. It’s so beautiful. We had the best captain named Dean. He was personable and talked to us telling great stories and also history of the area. His driving skills are out of this world awesome. I would do this many times over .Written 5 March 2025
- Castletroy740 contributionsAmazing trip on the Dart river with Pedro through incredible sceneryWe enjoyed an amazing trip along the Dart River with Pedro originally from Brazil but truly enjoying his new adopted life in NZ. The water level on the river was low but that did not deter from the ability to manoeuvre the boat through the various channels and rips as we weaved a path through the wilderness. The views were truly beautiful and could not have been experienced from the banks of the rivers. We finished up in a valley surrounded on all sides by sheer cliff faces and not another human being in sight. Pedro was very informative about local Māori culture and history about the surroundings which enhanced the experience. Highly recommend this activity if you are looking for an adventure filled with incredible scenery.Written 2 March 2025
- Kate C0 contributionsThrilling, beautiful adventure. Do it!We turned up on spec and were able to join the afternoon trip. The staff were friendly and professional and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Andre was a brilliant guide with interesting facts about the area and a thrilling journey that was fast and exciting whilst always feeling safe.Written 27 February 2025
- Seattletraveler1010 contributionsGreat river trip!We had a great time. The boat took us way up river and it was really cool going so fast over the shallow water. The scenery was spectacular and our guide was great! It was very helpful to have the bus pick us up and drop us off in town since the start of the trip is quite a ways out of town. I would definitely recommend this trip for anyone looking to get out on the river and experience nature at its best.Written 26 February 2025
- Bill B0 contributionsIncredible way to experience part of New Zealand.Great experience all around! The staff was very responsive to my online queries before the trip, including a refund for one member of my group, and were great once we got to the pick up point in Glenorchy (we did the self drive option). The boat driver (I don’t recall his name!) was very competent and attentive to the needs of the passengers while on the river. Some people were good with more spins and speed, others not so much, so he did a nice balancing act with the adventure stuff while also educating us on our surroundings. Pictures cannot fully capture the beauty and scale of the landscape, but seeing it from a boat on the river was a fun and memorable experience.Written 25 February 2025

The provided outdoor clothing kept us warm on a cool 12C day as the Jetboat roared upriver at 80 km/h. The Funyaks coming back down river were the best part and our talented guide, Michelle, kept us safe as we fooled around in the steady but gentle rapids. Would do this again!

We had a fantastic trip up the river dart on the jet boat followed by the funyak. The jet boat is amazing and so skilfully driven by Finn who also gave us lots of information about the beautiful Glenorchy valley. We then picked up our funyaks , such a peaceful way to see the river and the valley, thanks to Sophie our guide who did a great job keeping us going in the right direction !The lunch time stop walking across the braided river bed to another canoeing spot was just wonderful and jumping in to the clear if somewhat freezing water a highlight Top bombing from Toby ! . Would totally recommend this trip , experienced and informative and fun guides who made it a day to remember.

A big shout out to the team at Dart River Adventures. We arrived in Queenstown on the Sunday and booked the Funyak canoe plus Jet Boat tour for Monday hoping it would run with only the two of us. A call on the Monday morning confirming they would run the funyak part of the tour for our party of two. (the jet boat experience incl another couple). A big thank to Ed our jet boat driver who was a lot of fun with our 360 spins and his knowledge and even excitement when we travelled 45kms up the river. We were met by Toby halfway back to commence our funyak paddle. Toby is knowledgeable and nothing seemed to phase him.... even our paddling. The highlight was paddling into the chasm and sitting having a wonderful packed lunch just taking in the views of our wonderful country.
Thanks to the team for making this experience happen.
PS. take insect repellant - those sandflies are big.

Family started getting sick several days ago and tried to call to cancel, but no answer. Day of trip fresh snow on the mountains but the trip must go on according to them. They refused to refund so we paid $2,000 for a trip that would have been miserable. Do not book ahead, who would have thought of fresh snow and insistance on proceeding.

This was so fun, would absolutely recommend. Caleb was our guide and he was so friendly, he really made it a great day. The jet boat ride is really fun and just the right amount of speed, spins and scenery. We loved our day on the Dart River!

The scenery along the way is amazing, you will experience snow mountains ( almost 360 around you), crystal blue lake and rivers (all the way from end to end), jet will take you to the upstream with many spins to panorama the landscapings, with a mystery paradise adventure surprise before or after delicious handmade lunch.
The guide James is very nice and kind, and will keep you safe all the time.
We really really enjoyed the adventure and will highly recommend to everyone that this is a MUST GO tour if you are on the planet.
Thanks very much!!!

We did the jetboat-funyak day, and this set us back $1105 as a family of 4. The Dart River is beautiful and one guide, Nina was wonderful, and saved this day from being unbearable. There were 2 kiwis, a male who had a giant chip on his shoulder and a woman who drove the bus and had questionable non PC humor. Very anti-Aussie. Bad taste, when you're a tour guide. If you like being herded about, you'll enjoy this. The buffet lunch was cold cuts, stale bread and pea quiche. The chasm is beautiful but its hard to take a photo being hurried along or having 12 funyaks jammed against you. I had the impression that staff were OVER tourists, and wanted the day to END. When I fell over, dragging my kayak out of the water, the female kiwi guide offered the words 'try not to fall over' and laughed. So comforting. Thanks. Then the bus to take us back wouldnt start. The angry kiwi main guy sat in the broken bus not uttering a word to us, whilst we passed the time on the pebbled beach, being devoured by sand flies and without water. No one had water since lunch. My whole family were gasping when the replacement bus came an hour later. The apology about the bus breakdown included the words 'it wasn't our bus so its not really our fault'. It was probably an amazing tour, back in the day. Staff need to get hospitality training or stay at home. And put some love into the lunch. Also, if you're unfit, make sure you have a friend who can assist you as the currents can be hard work.

Kia ora Dream169055,
Thank you for your feedback as it allows us a chance to connect with you and investigate this further. It is concerning to receive this type of feedback and we are gutted you didn't have a great experience with us.
We pride ourselves on providing outstanding customer service and care to all of our customers and this certainly sounds out of the ordinary. I apologise that your interactions with some of our kaimahi (team) was not satisfactory and the lunch was not what you were expecting. I will definitely be following this up.
If you could please let me know your booking name or trip time/day it would be greatly appreciated. You can email me on zoe.wood@nttourism.co.nz. I would love to get to the bottom of this and resolve this with you as soon as possible.
I would like to thank you again for your honest feedback and also for noting how wonderful Nina was, we agree she is great!

Zoe

We did this trip on a glorious bluesky day. We joined in Glenorchy. Found it to be professionally run and an emphasis on safety as well as fun.
The group size was larger than i was expecting - around 35 people and our great guide Morgan said that was normal for this time of year. The age range was about 6 years to late 70s at a guess - a number of families and a big group of "oldies". Some of them have probably never been in a kayak in their life, but the boats aren't like normal kayaks, more like a small raft. The guides are conservative on the river when it comes to safety, so being inexperienced at kayaking shouldn't stop you having a go at all. The jet boat ride was fun and we enjoyed taking the funyaks into the Chasm. Lunch was yum, though be aware that lunch is around mid afternoon rather than "lunchtime", so take some snacks if that matters to you.
The trip did extend longer than we were expecting, i think we got back to Glenorchy about 5.15pm, so don't book anything in Queenstown expecting to be back by 5pm which i think is the time the website indicates you'll return? The guides did a great job keeping the large range and number of people moving along and minimising pfaffing, which was no easy task. Being kayakers ourselves we didn't find the trip "adventurous" as such, but we enjoyed it nonetheless, and didn't expect otherwise (knowing no experience was necessary and families go on it). It's a beautiful part of the country.

Had a great trip on the Dart river! It’s such a beautiful spot although in Spring the water levels are low and so the funyaks need a haul upstream and the sandflies will attempt to nibble any exposed bits! The jet boat was fun and they made sure you are suitably geared up in wet suits, boots, waterproofs and fleeces. Just wear a swimsuit underneath. I didn’t swim as it’s very cold water despite looking inviting but the other half gave it a go - he didn’t last long!! Decent food at lunch although the vegan party member just had a bread roll and little cake - just an option of a salad sandwich which was poor and thought there might be some soup as described previously. It didn’t detract much from the overall experience though. It was lovely to paddle on that glorious blue water listening to the birds and seeing that amazing scenery. Thanks to the hard working guides! Slept well afterwards 🤣

Kia Ora,
Thank you for taking the time to write us a review. We are so pleased that you had a great experience on your trip with us. We are very lucky to be able to operate in such a beautiful part of the world and are glad that you loved it as much as we do.
We have taken your comments about the vegan lunch onboard and will pass your comments onto Glenorchy kitchen.
We're chuffed that this didn't impact your experience overall, however, and hope to be able to welcome you back to Dart River at some point in the not-too-distant future!

I had an absolutely lovely day funyaking with our guides JJ and Matt! The weather was perfect - could not have asked for a better day (sunny with a light wind). It was really poop weather yesterday, but Dart River Adventures nicely contacted me yesterday and asked if I would like to reschedule or get a refund - I'm really glad I gave myself one more day in Glenorchy and was able to reschedule until today.
Both JJ and Matt were extremely nice and very informative. I especially liked the karakia that JJ gave before we entered the river on the funyaks and Matt's informative talk about the invasive mammal predators and Routeburn Dart Wildlife Trust. Thank you for the lovely day!

The whole trip from Queenstown roughly for 8 hours. 1 hr go, 1 hr return , 2 hr for jet boat, 1-2 hr for lunch at national park , other time for canoe, am I right ?
Written 9 August 2024
Jet boat was less than that. More time on the funyak depending on flow. There is also time learning the rules/process, getting outfitted with wet suit before jet boat and after.
Written 21 September 2024
My wife and me have no expeirence on Canoe , is there any minimum experience require ?
Written 9 August 2024
There were some obvious beginners in our group but it helps to have some notion of how to paddle as the current at times could be nudging the funyak to a shallow side of the river and you don't want to get grounded!

Are there any age or physical requirement limits?

My trip was cancelled on the same morning due to bad weather conditions, how do I make sure I get a full refund???
Written 7 November 2018
Call who you booked through and ask if card was run thorough, if so ask for receipt of credit to account. Because there are many cancellations for weather on this and other trips like Milton Sound in many cases they do not run charges through until confirmation trip will take place.

My daughter is 4.5 yrs old but she is taller than 1m. Can she join the tour? Thanks.
Written 8 April 2018
You'd definitely need to ask the organisers. We were in two person Funyaks which meant both people had to steer and row. There's always the chance of someone falling into the river which can be quite treacherous. We had some adult "non swimmers" in our group who didn't speak English. I don't think it would have been easy for anyone if they had fallen into the water. I'm a school teacher and I definitely wouldn't take a child on the Funyak part of the trip.
