- N3295OUpetero0 contributionsLlife on the SoundsFascinating, fun & informative 6hr trip in tbe care of Kelsey & Mark !! Got a real insight to life on the Sounds from their commentary and visits to an off grid farm, isolated testy and family at their farm and garden.Written 1 March 2025
- LoisN1340 contributionsbest day everKelsey and Mark were fabulous hosts. They were so knowledgeable and we had so much fun on Posties day off. Lots of fun and interesting stops. We all just had so much fun and wouldn't hesitate to do it again.Written 15 February 2025
- Tjakko H0 contributionsToo expensive for a crowded rushing boattour.Beautiful surroundings and nice areas where a few people live. The boat tour it self is crowded with more then 50 people on board and you don't get to speak to local people at all (as the brochure mentioned). The boat rushes from one pier to another where the mail was handed over at the pier, and the booat rushes off again.Written 13 April 2023
- V5585WEdavidp0 contributionsA very relaxing and entertaining dayThe expert and humerous commentary, beautiful landscape, comfortable cruise boat, mussell farms, beach lunch stop, interesting mail delivery stops - excellent value for money at $140 each for around 7 hours entertainment. At a very small cost, the cruise could have provided biscuits with the hot drinksWritten 16 February 2023
- philiplO8061JR0 contributionsPeloris Mailboat CruiseIt was a great trip. We were lucky to get a couple of extra stops. It was raining when we left Havelock but the afternoon was great, Shop around for prices.Written 12 July 2022
- 177Chris1770 contributionsExploring the SoundsFabulous day in the sun to enjoy Pelorous Sounds. There were lots of stop offs to drop off mail and groceries so that was nice to see the locals. The lunch stop off was at the very nice Te Rawa Lodge. A great spot for a glass of refreshment with your lunch. The Captain and Captain's mate did a great job. We enjoyed the very 'kiwi' commentary - great stuff.Written 10 April 2022
- BBGMBF0 contributionsGreat boat trip around the soundsWe had perfect weather for our Sunday cruise, and some great kiwi banter from our crew, amongst facts about life out in the sounds. Stopped by a few bays to drop off some supplies. Highlight was probably stopping for (bring your own lunch) at the Wilson Bay farm. Interesting talk about life on a remote farm from the Foote's. The Captain's Daughter is a good pub for a drink afterward too.Written 14 April 2021
- erinandjo0 contributionsWould highly recommend. We have just got back from an wonderful day out. The trip was bloody awesome. We went with our elderly mums. They absolutely loved it. The crew we're outstanding. Had a great time. We would highly recommend it.Written 20 March 2021
- Lindaannz0 contributionsGreat day out in Pelorous SoundA fabulous day exploring the outer area of Pelorous Sound (Friday trip). Our captain, James, kept us informed and hugely entertained with his deep knowledge and background of Pelorous! Super comfortable, fast catamaran boat. Put the is trip in your list.Written 16 March 2021
- Jenanne60 contributionsVery pleasant day out on the waterEnjoyed the whole cruise, from the bush walk, the visit to a local farm, hearing all about mussel and salmon farming. Levon our skipper gave a very informative commentary and his assistant Nicole was more then happy to answer any questions. The whole trip was relaxing and very pleasant. Coffe on board was good too.Written 13 February 2021
- MummaandCo0 contributionsSunday best of the week wasn't the bestThird time we have done various forms of this trip & it was by far the least interesting! The young, male captain was great - he had a real sense of humor. T was the opposite, don't think she spoke to anyone the whole time. The walk was fantastic, very enjoyable but a shame we didn't have time for a quick swim too. The Wilson farm was also interesting but really it wasn't a tour, we saw in their woodlshed then had a picnic. No mail was delivered sadly & the mussel farm tour was just the boat going between the rows. Not happy that there was no lunch stop at Te Rawa as advertised!! We had no food with us so were starving by the time we got back to Havelock, not so much fun watching others have a picnic! This was never mentioned once to us. The scenery is beautiful, the commentary was very interesting I just wouldn't recommend the Sunday trip & make sure you take food!!Written 4 January 2021
- Gordon H0 contributionsAuthentic Kiwi ExperienceMy wife and I did both a transfer to one of the lodges in the sounds the mail tour out to Port Ligar. Fascinating experience, the crew really made it worthwhile in the description of the different residents what they did and how long they've been there with quite a bit of comedy thrown in. Everyone was so helpful as we had a 5m long double kayak.Written 20 December 2020
- G1nstar0 contributionsAwesome outer bays tripWe went on the Friday mail boat run to the outer bays. The boat is easy to move around, covered inside and outer top deck. You can go out on the front when approaching the lodges for mail delivery. We were greeted by dogs, goats, sheep and pigs. Along the route we saw dolphins, took a short bush walk to a lookout and saw some shearers working hard. Left at 10am and returned at 4.30pm. A great trip I would highly recommend and hope to do again.Written 18 December 2020
- KiwiKomments0 contributionsWhat a Great Day Out!Under clear blue skies 29c ,and a full tide we set off on the Wednesday route with Captain J and the helm with crew lady T . Right from the booking in the cheerful nature began!. Capt J outlined the consequences of loading yr hat as we set sail with a good chuckle 🤣. As we went from inlet wharf to wharf ‘meeting’ many soles who have chosen their lives in the remote wildness of the Sounds. Not only did we encounter Dusky Dolphins and penguins there were , according to Captain J many types of Shags!🤭 An excellent day out, Well done Mail Boat crew!Written 16 December 2020
- KarenB81300 contributionsGood day outThanks to the staff who made this trip an excellent day out. We really enjoyed the stop off at Wilsons Bay Farm. Only comment I would make is make sure you pack yourself a good lunch.Written 13 December 2020

One of the highlights of our New Zealand tour. The weather was quite variable but the cloud formations just added to the experience and at one point, we witnessed a clear and perfect rainbow. The scenery throughout the trip was spectacular and added to that was the chance to watch mail and other deliveries in action. Many of the customers came down to their jetties to chat briefly with the boat crew and many brought their families and dogs along and even a pet pig at one place. The boat was comfortable with ample indoor seating, free beverages and importantly lots of space outside on the roof. My camera didn't know what had hit it. Even a pod of dolphins came to investigate us. Worth every penny.

A very professional operation with a personal touch.
All aspects of the cruise were handled smoothly and efficiently, from check-in, condition of the boat, and the professionalism and personalities of Ross the skipper and first mate Mark. All 4 of us enjoyed our lunch at Te Rawa Lodge. Add the stunning scenery of Pelorus Sound and this day out exceeded our expectations.

Great trip with the mailboat and then to really make it special was the Bottle Nosed Dophins that put several different shows on for us. A very special day. Big thanks to skipper Kelsie & Mark

This would be a fabulous trip IF the weather is warm and sunny. We didn't check the forecast before we booked (our fault) and it rained all day, which would not be a problem except that the boat is so keen to make money they fill every seat. So there were no indoor seats left, which meant we and half our fellow passengers sat in the rain and wind for hours! Either that or stand downstairs for 6 hours! So in poor weather all this is, is a VERY expensive way to catch flu...
It seems also that the 'spectacular NZ wildlife' you are going to see doesn't like the rain either. We didn't see a single penguin, seal or dolphin. This is not uncommon, speaking to some of our fellow passengers who have done the trip before. So take that claim with a pinch of salt! Also, they only visit the King Shag colony one day of the week which is not made clear when you book.
They also say no alcohol to be brought on board which we assumed was because it's a working boat. But no, it's because they want to make even more money selling you theirs.
So, if the forecast guarantees great weather and 'all' you want is marvellous scenery, then do go on this trip. It would be fantastic and the commentary by the crew - esp Kelsey - it informative and funny. But don't go to see wildlife. And definitely don't go if there is even a slight chance of rain!

Honestly...we had imagined a relaxed tour through the PellorusSound...where you can quietly look at the unique landscape.....however, the disillusionment came relatively quickly, after leaving the port.
The jet engines drove the boat over the water at 54 kmh, there was no stopping on the upper deck!!!So we continued the whole trip inside...very comfortable seats, but actually you want to experience something like this outside. It was a long five hours.
However, I also want to emphasize: this is a real mail ship (and not a tourisightseeing tour) and the crew is doing an important job and they are doing it very well!
The mistake was with us because we had booked with a different performance.

It was a very boring trip with no highlights worth mentioning. There is nothing to see or discover, not even any animals on the way. In addition, there is sometimes an ice-cold wind that forces the participants indoors. A six-hour trip that should have ended after an hour. Wasted time and money.

Forecast was for a mostly sunny, turned out to be mostly overcast and windy. Chose to sit outdoors on the upper deck which was a mistake because of the noise of the wind, could not make out too much of the onboard commentary due to the noise. Moved to indoors on the lower deck at halfway through the journey, it was warmer and the commentary was clear, unfortunately the windows were covered in overspray from the large waves which were hitting the boat, could not make anything out clearly or look for any wildlife which was said to be a possibility on the tour. Maybe on a calm sunny day it would have been better, but that’s the chance you take when you book ahead. The skipper was great at his job, pity about the wind noise and overspray, Rob.

Highly recommend. Get to sit back and relax while taking in the beautiful surroundings. Great to see an all-female crew who were all super lovely, enthusiastic, knowledgeable and gave very comedic commentary! Complimentary tea, coffee, hot water. Clean toilets aboard also. Dress warm if wanting to sit up top :)

A great day out, even better as the rain stayed off. Skipper Russ, assisted by Sandra (?) were both very informative and were keen to make the trip as best as possible for us. Interesting stop offs in the sound. At lunchtime opted for the visit to Wilson Bay farm, can recommend this. We were welcomed by Kelly & husband Trevor, who gave us a good insight into their off grid life on the sound and a tour of the farm. Didn’t get time for our lunch, as we were too busy chatting to them.
And to cap the day off a large number of dolphins swam around the boat for a while on the way back. Also saw a seal eating its lunch & a sting ray … what a Saturday!

Absolutely fantastic trip, scenery stunning, skipper Nicole was brilliant, her crew member was also great.
Nicole was a wealth of knowledge with all the stations we stopped in at plus history and was highly entertaining. Enjoyed meeting the locals who greeted us at each stop.
It was a great day
10/10 Would highly recommend.

1. Dose the Full Day Marlborough Sounds Mail Boat Cruise operate every day in Feb. 2020?
2. We plan to take the Weillington to Picton ferry, and then catch the Intercity bus from Picton to Havelock, stay overnight, then catch this cruise the next morning. Would this plan work?
3. How far is the Intercity bus station to the departure point at Pelorus Mail Boat Ltd, Pier B Havelock Marina? Is there recommended lodging for convenience?
Written 15 July 2019
1. It should, since this is a regular mail service for the local communities. Keep an eye on their website as the time approaches to be sure.
2. Yes, if you reserve your trip in advance. We were able to get on the Sunday trip with only a few days notice. I don't know if the weekday ones (which vary according to where they're making delivery stops) are any different. You're right to stay overnight somewhere closer than Picton, in my opinion.
3. Sorry, don't know this as we drove over from Nelson where we were based.
Written 22 July 2019
How many passengers does the boat take?
Written 17 April 2019
Sorry Sarah haven’t logged on for a while....big beautiful catamaran probably over 100 full but quiet in winter.
Written 29 June 2019
Havelock is too small to have a cruise ship dock. You'd have to drive over from Nelson (about an hour), but cruise ships only dock for about 12 hours in Nelson. The mail boat leaves very early in the morning, so you'd need to be in the area at least overnight. I hope this is what you needed.
Written 22 February 2019
We will be on a royal caribbean cruise ship. How do we get to Havelock Marina, Pier B
Written 14 June 2018
You would need to travel by car to Havelock, about 30 minutes drive. There are rental cars available at the Picton terminal. The road is slow and winding.
