5 romantic getaways in Georgia to book
Fall deeper in love in the Peach State.
There’s something eternally romantic about Georgia. The charm of Southern hospitality, the indulgent restaurants, and the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains make for a magical trip. Whether you’re traveling from out of state for a romantic weekend getaway or looking for a reason to explore your own backyard with your significant other, here are some of the most romantic towns and cities for a weekend trip in Georgia.
Augusta
Best for: Golf, history, and the splendor of the Savannah River
Augusta, on the Georgia–South Carolina border, is terrific for lovebirds who like nothing more than to eat, drink, and golf. Known for the Masters' Tournament, which is hosted at Augusta National Golf Club each April and draws thousands of tourists every year, it’s obviously a haven for golf lovers.
But beyond its sports scene, the city has stunning natural beauty. You’ll find the best views of the Savannah River along Downtown Augusta's scenic Riverwalk, a four-mile walking and cycling loop. After enjoying the view of the river, adventurous couples can travel its waters by kayaking through the Savannah River Rapids. History buffs shouldn’t miss the boyhood home of former President Woodrow Wilson, a historical landmark and museum. Bed down at a cozy vacation rental in the area.
Blue Ridge
Best for: Waterfalls, wine, and iconic landscapes
Of course, we could not forget to mention the beautiful city of Blue Ridge, home to crystalline lakes and Georgia’s portion of the iconic Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s the perfect setting for a quiet, serene escape from busy routines, the type of place where couples can finally enjoy undisturbed quality time together. Start your trip with a hand-in-hand stroll across the swinging bridge over the Toccoa River, accessible via the Benton MacKaye Trail, which takes hikers to the rushing Long Creek Falls.
Reward yourself after a challenging hike with a beer or a glass of wine at one of the region's many wineries and breweries. A fan-favorite among locals and tourists alike is Bear Claw Vineyards, which offers daily tastings, live music, and a rustic treehouse for overnight guests. Lastly, don't leave without riding the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway, a historic railway with incredible views. If you don’t stay at Bear Claw, consider booking a room at the homey Blue Ridge Inn Bed & Breakfast, an eight-room Victorian home-turned-inn a block from downtown Blue Ridge.
Dahlonega
Best for: Picnics, lavender fields, and photo ops
About an hour from Blue Ridge, you’ll find Dahlonega, an excellent destination for outdoorsy couples. Visit the Red Oak Lavender Farm or Dicks Creek Falls to get the perfect Instagram-worthy photo. Or, learn about Georgia's role in the Gold Rush by touring the Consolidated Gold Mine.
There’s more wine here, too, with popular stops including the Three Sisters Vineyards and Montaluce Winery and Restaurant. We also recommend Kaya Vineyard and Winery, the largest winery in Dahlonega. They even offer picnic lunches to pair with your wines—is there anything more romantic?
Savannah
Best for: Southern charm, spectacular oaks, and paranormal activity
Start your morning off right in Savannah with traditional Southern fare like shrimp and grits from Goose Feathers Express Café & Bakery. Then, reserve some time to walk through Savannah's Historic District to see the whimsical live oak trees dripping with Spanish moss inside Forsyth Park. The jewel of the park is the Candler Oak, a 300-year-old tree that stands at 52 feet tall. Its crown of branches spreads up to 110 feet from the trunk.
Like to add a little spookiness to your romantic getaways? Savannah is one of the most haunted cities in America, making it a great place to take a trolly ghost tour—especially come October, when temperatures are lower and the supernatural abounds.
Atlanta
Best for: Fine dining and fine dancing
Downtown Atlanta is a fabulous starting point for young couples, with some of the city’s best nightlife. Get in on a Friday and start your night with a seven-course tasting menu at Aria, known for its artistically plated creations. Then, hit the town at one of the many bars and nightclubs, such as Red Phone Booth, an intimate speakeasy with outstanding cocktails and small bites.
After spending the night at the Candler Hotel Atlanta, a Curio Collection by Hilton property in a historic Beaux-Arts building, or the colorful, ‘70s-inspired Hotel Clermont, explore more of Atlanta’s fascinating sites. Ride the massive SkyView Ferris Wheel inside Centennial Park, which was initially constructed for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games. Within walking distance, see penguins, sea lions, and tropical fish first-hand at Georgia Aquarium. And be sure to learn something new about the U.S. civil rights movement at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights and Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site.
